I’m getting ready to “crawl out through the fallout” with Dan! Dan really loves the Fallout franchise and we’ve been excited about the new series coming out on Amazon Prime. We very seldom take a day off, but we decided to take a day off today and binge the series with a bunch of Fallout themed snacks. I made Blamco mac & cheese bites, pretzels…which we can’t really find in the game, but I made pretzels so that’s just the way it is. 😆🥨Fancy Lad snack cakes, Slocum’s Joe donuts and of course Dan’s got his cup of coffee going. Yum-Yum Deviled Eggs, (those deviled eggs still look fresh and they’re meant to be a couple hundred years old 😆) and of course, a can of potato crisps. (No, not the brand made by the company owned by Kelloggs) I actually intended to make labels for several items and planned to make a box of Sugar Bombs, but just kind of ran out of time. But we’re really excited to sit down and watch the series. Our food layout looks so fun, we just wanted to share. I’m making Mirelurk cakes later on for dinner, and Mole Rat Wonder Meat Dip (from the official Fallout cookbook) that we’ll be heating up later. I made several others too, I did a love candle, and I also did one for protection, that didn’t go as planned but I learned something so that I could pass that along, I did the troubleshooting so you don’t have to. I used recycled wax from spell candles and all the other ingredients that you probably already have around your house. Even if you’ve never poured a candle before this is a project that I bet you can do especially after I share my tips for things that worked and things that didn’t. Wearing green today my way. I don’t really celebrate the institution that starved, manipulated, and beat the traditions out of my Irish ancestors; instead I choose to think of my ancestors themselves. I think about the land that nurtured the people who proceeded me. I grieve the culture that was not passed down to us as it should have been. I delight in their blood that flows through my veins. I wonder at the books where I can learn more about old traditions and reclaim what I can with gratitude. I sing because of their old voices ringing in my synapses. I hope to live up to and surpass their wildest dreams. I strive to create beauty with pictures and words in honor of them. I fight to make the world a bit more free because they did too. I learn because there’s nothing worse than when the oppressed become the oppressors. I try to be brave because I know that they were, or I wouldn’t be here. I grow because with every bloodline comes baggage that it’s our duty to heal so that the next generations baggage can be lessened. Thinking about my YouTube friends this morning because I’m drying a hollowed out egg for my next video! Eggs are pricey right now so I’m definitely not wasting it (I never waste an egg) it’s becoming part of my brunch! As most of you know, last Monday morning my husband Dan fell on the ice and broke his wrist. This whole week was a blur of the emergency room, phone calls back and forth with the insurance company, calling every orthopedic surgeon in the area after the big ice storm on Monday, surgery consultation appointment 45 minutes away, and he had major surgery (also 45 minutes away) with a metal plate and screws in his wrist on Friday. It was very painful but the pain was worse after the surgery but he’s recovering and has been in good spirits. I found a five star orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries so he was in very good hands. We’ll be working together (him with one hand) to get caught up on Etsy orders during the week ahead. Dan wanted me to pop on here and thank everyone for the well wishes and healing energy. After the weekend we’re finding our stride with the temporary new normal. We won’t be doing a Go Fund Me or anything, but we’re welcome any positive energy. Beyond that, I do have a Patreon and our Etsy shop is also up and running, we have spell kits and black salt in our Etsy shop that will ship quickly as everything is already made. Dan can still create many items with one hand, for the items that need a tighter setting on the heat press, we’ve figured out that we can team up closing the press, so orders may take slightly longer, but we’re still working! When you run a small cottage business you don’t get paid days off or sick leave, so as always, Etsy business is appreciated. Feeling loved first thing when I woke up. What makes you feel most like that “witch of the forest who sings to the moon, washes her face in morning dew, and brews a cup of enchanted tea while planning magick?” For me, it’s when Dan wakes up before I do to go on a walk and finds something weirdly beautiful that he knows I’ll love like a dead butterfly, sparkling rock, or a fallen birds nest. He lovingly carries it home and leaves it someplace where he knows I’ll see it. Whatever you do, if you’re going to be with someone, find that person who sees you. That one who knows which blanket is your favorite. They listen without judgement, and are your ally in both important things and shenanigans. That person who helps you see that what others have judged to be imperfect is what they love about you. They don’t scoff at your fears but do help you laugh in the face of them. Just dropping in with a Freya update and something to make you laugh. (Scroll to see that!) Well, it made me laugh. She got her sutures out and the vet said to bring her back in one more week because he wants to double check that one spot that’s having a hard time healing. You can see it there on her elbow. But it looks like it’s forming a scab over that big hole that was there, so that’s really good news. The vet says we need to keep the donut on her until they check her one more time, we do take it off to brush her, especially she loves to have her neck brushed. And there’s been a few times I’ve let her take it off when I’m sitting with her right there in the room and I can keep an eye on her and I know she’s not licking it. She loves that because then she gets to scratch all her other spots. . I was randomly on the Voila AI app and decided to put one of Frey’s pictures in theirs to see what it would come up with. I mean, the first one is kinda cute, look at the tongue on the second one WTF!? it thought her tongue was like a persons face! That’s nightmare fuel! The building brick one is pretty damn weird, and that last one I’m not even sure what’s happening there! Well, I have house work and artwork and lots of other stuff. Freya had to go see the vet today to get her sutures out this afternoon. She never used to have a problem with going to the vet, now she gets very nervous and shakes really hard because of course when she had to have the surgery she had to stay there for a really long time without us. She does still love seeing the other animals come and go. She gets really excited when she sees kitties. She’s had some difficult experiences there since because she’s got one little spot right there at her elbow which gets flexed a lot that isn’t quite healing right. She’s had to go back a few times to have that looked at and actually had to have it re-stitched at one point. The doctor wants to see her again in 10 days to look at the spot that’s taking a little longer to heal, but she took it all her sutures out today. Unfortunately, she still got to wear the donut as we’ve started calling it. She’s had this instead of a cone from the beginning so she doesn’t realize how much better she actually has it. I did give her a homemade pup cup when we got home, which is whipped cream, and a little dish. I’ll have to put some more Minooka honey on her wound a little bit and I also need to make another batch of bone broth for her. Ok, the dining room isn’t “company” clean, but it’s “family” clean. I still need to tidy up the bookshelves, but I’ll do that a little bit at a time next week. I whittled downs trashbag’s worth full of mail to two little blue “book bins.” I really should have done a full before pic, that table was about a foot high with three different craft projects plus mail and other stuff. I even washed the tablecloth. Dan walked through and chuckled at the sight of the table to with nothing on it! 😆It was all my crap, no one would’ve known where to go with it but me. Ugh. What a mess. I really let the dining room get away from me and I need to get it cleaned up. So I’m getting ready to put on a podcast with my earbuds in and try to focus on just cleaning my space so that I can maybe shoot a YouTube video today or tomorrow. I’d like to have a new one up for you all next week. This is me basically posting this online for some accountability on my behalf. It’s kind of a thing called body doubling. Basically, if you know someone else is kind of watching then you feel like you have to do the thing that you don’t want to do. So today for me that’s cleaning my dining room. Chopping beautiful homegrown tomatoes while my owl salt shaker looks on at the carnage! These tomatoes were gifted to me by my friend Faith, they are so very nice! So far they’ve been featured in three meals. My friend Kim @kimberlyannloveandlight got some from her too. My tomato plants that Kim grew for me lovingly by seed are just starting to set fruit, Dan noticed when mowing today. I tried to post this yesterday evening but I was helping her out and the was just exhausted. Freya is home from her surgery! The doc said that the thing (they’re calling it a tumor) came out easily, Doctor Stewart said she was very happy with how it went. Freya has 14 stitches, it’s pretty gross looking right now , I’ll wait to show it until it’s healed some. Ew. They let her come home yesterday, she was very loopy but we didn’t mind, she was really happy to see us. How about that cone alternative!? It’s inflatable! Her bloodwork was good and they’re sending the tumor to have it biopsied but I have a feeling it’ll be ok. We’ve got her pain meds and antibiotics too. She got a new blue piggy toy and a bag of salmon treats to help her heal and make her smile. Thanks again to everyone who donated and shared the fundraiser and made this possible. Also a big thank you for all your kind words of support and healing energy. We’re so relieved our girl is going to be ok. At the vet early this morning, today is her surgery to have the growth on her leg removed. Freya was really nervous, then she remembered she’s just a four legged person with fur and jumped up on the bench next to me. It was hard to leave her there. The surgery is scheduled at 2:00 today. The nurse said they’ll probably keep her overnight, I’m not loving that, but it’s really up to the doc. It feels weird here with her being gone but she’s getting good care. On one level my default is to push back against the idea of a “right way or wrong way” to do something, but… This might be a hot take but the organizing books by color thing, I have questions. Ok, yes, it looks cool. Do they buy books by color? Do they just organize the books they love by color, or are they going to the bookstore looking for three more green books to complete the look? Have they read them or is it decor only? Can they find the books they want to read this way? Having grown up in a home of artists who also loved the public library it looks cool, but is it all style and no substance? I don’t know, maybe it varies from one person to another. (Like most things) The latest bookshelf trend however (scroll to see) really has me stumped. Turning books backwards on the shelf?! Yes, it’s got an attractive minimalist look but it gives my ADHD out-of-sight-out-of-mind brain a feeling of panic! It’s hard enough to find a book in my house lined with bookshelves, turn them around?!? These can’t be readers doing this right? Tell me these aren’t book people. Do they have a little card catalog and they’re using some new version of the Dewey decimal system? How in the name of Gutenberg (the printing press guy, not Steve) do they find that book they’re trying to reference? Unless they don’t know what books they have there, they don’t read them, or they just bought a bunch of books for decor? Maybe? Full disclosure, my system isn’t any better, in fact it’s not a system. (the last frame is my own bookshelf) No real order and also cluttered with crap, candles, rocks and other stuff, this is the nicest looking one currently the rest have more clutter which might include a chocolate wrapper. Can I find my books easily? No. We have read most of them, or intend to. My way, probably not the right way by anyone’s standards, but arguably more functional than turning the books backwards. Oh friends!!! We’re just overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity that the community showed us in the last 12 hours! We reached our goal for Freya’s surgery to get the weird big hygroma-like blob removed from her leg! This is a huge load off my mind as pet surgery definitely wasn’t in the budget so now I can focus on helping our fur girl instead of worrying about how I’ll pay for it. As you can see, she’s chilling out on our bed with her kitty Grimalkin taking good care of her. I’ll probably leave the fundraiser active until after her surgery on the 16th just in case anything unexpected happens that day but our vet says they think the estimate should be pretty accurate as long as it all goes to plan. If anyone still wants to help out the best way to still support Freya’s surgery and recovery is by popping by our shop instead of the fundraiser that way we can make you something beautiful in exchange. Of course Freya is a magickal doggo and she welcomes healing energy too, I’ll post updates on her medical stuff next week. You know, It’s really hard to ask for help, but every who helped with donations, sharing, or comments with well-wishes, you made it so much easier. My #purebreadgoodgirl needs help, gofundme alert! I've found myself in the difficult situation of needing to raise money for my sweet doggo because she needs surgery. (Scroll to see her modeling for Magickal Dogs Tarot and the pic after that is the growth, so don’t go further if you don’t want to see it.) Back in May she developed a weird growth on her elbow. The vet thought it was a hygroma, which is caused by repeated minor trauma to bony prominences on a dog, usually from laying on the hard ground. Our vet is concerned because she realized on our last visit that Freya gets to lay on the couch, our bed, and her soft bed all day and that's not the lifestyle of a dog with a hygroma. She's also young for a hygroma and not one of the breeds that usually gets them, so it doesn't seem like a normal hygroma. When it was drained the vet noticed a hard mass inside and after conferring with another veterinary surgeon, they decided it should be removed because it might be something worse. We're self-employed online sellers and have been for years, but the economy has hit us hard, with people struggling to buy bare necessities many of us cottage industries are feeling the crunch. So, our girl needs surgery now and I'm hoping that some people might be able to chip in a couple of bucks towards the surgery she needs. She's a member of our family and she gives everyone so much joy, we hope we can get the help she needs to keep her healthy for evening walks, playing with our cat and grandkids, and swimming in the river for years to come. It's shocking to learn that surgery for pets is expensive, nearly as costly as care for humans. We're also aware that we'll probably need a cone, medication, etc. once she's in recovery. I have a question for you; what should we name our new printer? Our new dye sublimation printer arrived! We were down briefly because of printer problems, and spent a week trying to fix it, but our printer Esgee kicked the bucket and will be going to the recycling center. It was a huge relief to realize that she was still under warranty, these aren’t printers you can get from the office supply store, they’re specialized and very VERY expensive! That warranty saved our bacon! So we’ve just gotten the new one set up and printing like a champ. We’ll be catching up on orders this weekend. These prints will be heat pressed onto blank garden flags, candle holders, pendants, sun catchers, altar tiles, tarot tins, and more. I crafted these two prototypes for brand new hexenspiegels that are inspired by the goddess Hecate! I love how the stropholos/Hecate’s wheel turned out on the back. I even worked a snake into the mirror frame. I’ll offer a choice of the single key charm or three keys on a key ring. A hexenspiegel is a special kind of mirrored charm used in folk magic, it reflects away the evil eye, harmful magical intentions, and generally bad vibes. We added some new oval tiles to our Etsy shop today. Scroll to see them all! The frame looks like a real cool gothic frame when it’s hanging on the wall but on closer inspection you’ll find that that’s an illusion, the frame is printed as part of the art! My OOTD, just got back from the river with Dan and Freya. I wear this skirt and sheer kimono (which I bought from the swimsuit aisle years ago) for everyday wear, even for a night out, so I sometimes forget they’re really swimsuit cover-ups that I’ve repurposed. Glad I remembered today, way more fun than an old tank top and cutoffs. Now they need to go in the wash because they’ve got river water on them! 😆 My freckles came out to play even though I had on 70 sunblock. I’m feeling good about rocking a goth girl bikini at 58, so that’s something. Yeah, I’m not as young as I used to be, but no one is. I’m as young as I’ll ever be again…so I don’t mind getting a little weird with it! It’s not a magazine bod, but it’s mine and it’s gotten me to where I am, so it deserves some fun fashion! Just popping in to wish you a beautiful Summer Solstice! I noticed these gorgeous blossoms at my local post office today. I know, I’m “supposed” do be frolicking magickally in nature today, but I used the energy of the day to do some much needed reorganizing in my kitchen and laundry room which doubles as a pantry. This year I’m focusing on trying to declutter and streamline my life, so the magick of my day wasn’t the kind of magick that’s beautiful or Instagramable, but significant to me. I’ll be spending some of the long days this week helping a friend in need and visiting with family. I do think I’ll have a little fire in my chiminea tonight, I have some very special magick planned for the fire that I’ll be sharing soon in the form of some magickal crafting. Grimalkin has a new Cat HQ and she loves it! You’ve probably seen a little gray table in front of that window in some of my YouTube videos, well, I decided the living room needed to be rearranged a bit so I moved her cat tree in front of that window and passed that table/desk back to my daughter who needs it because she’s selling her big glass computer desk. Grimm hasn’t used her cat tree much but now it’s her new favorite place! I’m so glad she’s getting more use out of it. My living room looks much bigger with the furniture rearranged, the couch and love seen has seen better days and will be replaced this year. In the meantime it’s nice to freshen up the space. Does anyone know what these awesome brass chicken foot tongs are for? Let me know if you’ve ever seen anything like this! I’m thinking they’re ice tongs, but they might work for incense charcoal! I spent a little time browsing in a really cool shop in Sullivan called The Gray Wall @the.gray.wall that sells refinished furniture, home decor, antiques, and other miscellaneous home goods. I picked up a couple selenite bowls there last time I was in. He always has beautiful and unique items, I saw so many enchanting items that I thought I’d share a few pics. So many beautiful antique mirrors, you know this witch loves a bit of mirror magick! I was delighted with the hand poured candle in a cauldron, the little silver cauldron on too! I didn’t know I needed to smell an antique violin, but it made me all misty and joyful remembering my childhood violin lessons! I love leftovers for lunch! My daughter found this Lasagna Soup recipe on Pinterest and sent it to me, it’s so easy and somehow magically tastes just like lasagna! You know I altered it, I used almond milk instead of heavy cream, turkey Italian sausage, way more garlic than the recipe calls for, and gluten free fusilli noodles, but they hold the creaminess of the soup perfectly and they remind me of the wavy edges on lasagna. I had to hide a bowl in the back of the fridge because everyone gobbles it up. Today I’m in the studio working up something special for the upcoming full moon and the Celtic Tree Month of Alder which runs from March 18-April 14 and embraces the energy of inner guidance, protecting what’s important to us, and the power of oracle. I love working tree magick during times of change and uncertainty, I find that tree energy is beautiful and grounding giving us a connection to our true self. I’ve been taking a little break from things, in the words of Stevie Nicks, “sometimes it’s a bitch, sometimes it’s a breeze…” Over the last 30 days or so I’ve finished a writing deadline, dealt with scammers, shady trolls, shipped 100 limited edition decks, had my granddaughter visit for spring break, got horrible news about a loved ones health, spent time with a dear friend, had the road in front of our house torn up for new water lines, got an unexpected check, discovered sourdough doesn’t bother my gluten intolerance, and now I’m slowly recovering from *drumroll please* bronchitis. Good news about the bronchitis though, they put me on short round of prednisone which is helpful for my autoimmune issues for a hot minute, so bonus! I’m using that grace period to get back on my turmeric regimen that I had let slip. Sometimes it’s both a bitch and a breeze. If I missed messages and stuff, I’ve just been conserving energy. The cold that turned into bronchitis had me down for a bit (and of course Dan has it) and we were eating frozen meals, but I’m feeling good enough today that a little kitchen witchy needed to happen. I’m making homemade Zuppa Toscana. A whole head of garlic won’t hurt a bit. I’m using turkey Italian sausage and almond milk instead of heavy cream so it’s dairy free and a bit lighter. Had fun visiting with my family in St. Charles MO yesterday and we walked down to watch the family friendly Mardi Gras parade! It’s not NOLA but it was fun. My daughter and her husband made real Cafe Du Monde coffee (that’s the mug from their trip) two kinds of beignets, these are the gluten free ones (recipe from Gluten Free on a Shoestring blog) that I ate way too many of. I’m still thinking about the gratitude that I was feeling when I was walking my doggo in the park yesterday. She was so excited and happy to be there! I hear the sound of birdsong and an acoustic guitar across the lake from a guy who was playing on a park bench. It’s so important to take time to look around at the beauty in the world. The reflection on water, a patch of soft moss, a tiny puffball mushroom, the joy of a dog up to their belly in a lake! So often we are like those geese on the water, they appear to be gliding along and the scene appears to be serene, but below the water their feet are paddling away busily on their way to take care of some bit of goose business or another. If you have a little time to stop paddling and just float on the water for a bit today and just be present in the moment, I highly recommend it.
