My Yule ritual this year was inspired by @middleagedwitch ‘s Yule episode 🧹 🎄 Rauhnächte is a German 13 wishes ritual associated with the 1️⃣3️⃣ days of yule/solstice. There are a variety of ways to do it, but this is my take 🧙♀️ ~~~~~~ Write down 13 wish on individual slips of paper ✍️ Fold them up so the writing isn’t visible ✉️ Each day for 13 days after I’ll burn 1 wish with out looking at it. 🔥 The first twelve burned will come true in order of the 12 months as a gift from the universe 🎁 . So the wish I burn today will come true in January. Saturdays burned wish will come true in February. Etc. The 13th day is the last wish. I’ll open that paper and read it. It seemed important to share some thoughts around hibernation, politics & war, scattered as they are. This time seems a tumult of emotion: grief at the world's war, disbelief at the inhuman response from world leaders, a sense of time running out as I try to wrap up loose ends before years' end, the satisfaction of completing my final in person event, fierce joy from the raw conversations in our Winter's Embrace community & finally, an all pervasive feeling that it's time to withdraw into hibernation. I've been talking allot with folks the last couple months about the call on us to echo the rest of nature to slow right down & turn within for insights at this time of year. Now it's time to do this for myself! I still have my wonderful sessions with the Winter's Embrace community into January, lots of journaling to do & a few jobs around the house, but I've mostly cleared out my diary to make space for sleep, rest, reading, walks, baking, dreaming into 2024 & cat cuddles! I'll also be taking two periods of Cauldron Time for physical & digital detox & spiritual retreat - my most nourishing & rewarding Winter habit. So you will be seeing a lot less of me. I am privileged that I can make this a reality but suggest you ask yourself where you can invite the spirit of hibernation into your daily life? This may mean slowing down a little, sleeping a little longer, finding a few hours one evening for journaling, sharing walks with family & friends... Don't blame yourself if this is hard, especially the closer we get to christmas. We live in a system that uses all of its power to keep you working, productive & consuming, & the level to which we can fight that differs greatly based on our personal circumstances. Also, it feels crass not to mention the privilege of taking time out in the midst of war. But I want to gently add another perspective, which is that for some of us, without the daily grind to distract us, creating more space for reflection actually allows us to be present with our thoughts & feelings. As we head towards Midwinter I like to think about the past year and examine the patterns and changes wrought. The darker, shorter days lead naturally to a turn inwards, to solitude and introspection that I whole-heartedly embrace. . This year I've noticed myself slipping into some unhealthy purchasing habits and, while I live within my means, my shopping has a wasteful, unnecessary element to it. That is something I'd like to change next year with a low-buy/intentional shopping challenge. ❄️ The Cailleach ❄️ The ancient Mother of Ireland; Queen of Winter, controller of storms and the weather, shape shifter, landscape maker, and protector of wildlife. She rules the dark half of the year when the days are short and the sun courses low in the sky. She has deathly pale blue skin and wields a magic staff made from Blackthorn. When she strikes the ground with it winter begins. The Cailleach is said to be a shapeshifter and sometimes assumes the shape of a heron. She is often associated with the Blackthorn tree. Perhaps it is due to this association that the blackthorn is sometimes known as the ‘Dark Crone of the Woods.’ The fairy who guards the blackthorn is known as the Lunantisidhe — the moon fairy. They aren’t very fond of humans and only leave the tree on a full moon in order to pay homage to the moon goddess. So this may be the safest time to pick sloes from the tree. This moon fairy has befriended a white crow. White crows are very rare and seeing one is said to be a good omen. This is a special edition set with a one off frosty blackthorn tree and added magic to the heron. Darkness is neither positive or negative, it just is. It's often thought of as negative, scary, undesirable. In order to embrace the winter, I've had to learn not to push away the dark. I’ve had to try and stop complaining about how early the sun sets this time of year, and remember that all creation begins in the dark. And it can be quite peaceful here. Because of my hypersensitivity to bright lights and sensory stimuli, darkness is a welcome retreat for me. It’s calming on the nervous system. In moments of overwhelm, simply closing my eyes is a game changer. Doing so, quiets the visual noise of the external world, which then makes it easier to quiet the mind. In that space, I can hear the voice of my inner guidance. It is here that I come back into my body. It is here in a dark place, where we can feel our internal world. It is here in a dark place, we can see what's below the surface… Our patterns, our shadows, those things which block our path We also access our dreams and aspirations here. Once you understand this, you see, the darkness is really a gift. Whew- what a day! The past two weeks have been very busy, chaotic, and stressful- so today the Goobs and I decided to have a little Mama/Griffin day. We started by heading briefly to the John Ball Zoo to see the red panda cubs, who are finally able to go out into the enclosure. They were SO cute! On our way back out, we came across a VERY vocal trio of howler monkeys- I’ve never heard them like that before! 😂 Griff and I then did a little early Christmas shopping to look for decorations, gifts, and a new tree. Griffin got the Elf on the Shelf Saint Bernard- so now he has all 3 elf pets. 😂 We then headed to my parents’ as they just brought home their new puppy today. Griffin played with that pup, played with his cousin Blakely, and even helped Nana demolish an old cabinet they tore out during renovations. I….. may have fallen asleep on the couch for a bit. 😂 like I said- busy, stressful couple of weeks. After dinner, Griffin and I met up with my sister and niece and walked through the Christmas lights at the LMCU ballpark. The kiddos wore matching hats, had hot cocoa, and got bundled up in the wagon to enjoy the ride. On our way home, we also stopped at Lowe’s, where we finally found the tree we wanted, and bought it before heading home. Ya’ll, I’m so tired. 😂 And despite some difficulties over the day, I’m glad I got to spend some 1:1 tine with my kiddo. I have a lot of photos and thoughts and things I wish to express from my amazing wonderful trip. However, I need time to go thru them and digest lol. So that will all come out over time. This morning, I am just incredibly grateful for the Dark half of the year is here. I think moving to a place where the seasons are so much clearer has been powerfully beneficial for my mental health. When the Summer leaves I just feel a weight lifted. There is stillness. There is crisp coldness. There is darkness that is so comforting. I can relax at another level. Lately I have been getting up at 5 am in the dark and just savoring the stillness and refreshing nature of it all. This morning the Moon (the glorious Moon) was still out being beautiful. I love this house but I sadly see the Moon less. And the leaves were a ghostly stunning color. I am so grateful for so many things.
