For some years now, it has been a ritual of mine to welcome and bless the rebirth of the sun on the winter solstice by drumming as the sun rises and watching it crest the horizon, heralding the growth of light and the diminishing dark. It’s especially meaningful when I can share it with my family. The winds were wild this solstice morn. The black shadows of my tree guardians danced in a pulsing rhythm against the slowly lightening sky. I heard the winds clutch at and shake the house, and the crows rode high, braving the buffeting. We are deep in the dark of midwinter, in the place of dreaming and of rest. Midwinter asks us to cease the outward activity and to begin the journey inward, finding some peace amongst the unnatural commercial chaos of the modern day holiday festival, and to expand within the realm of dreaming. Now, more than ever, we can dream a new world into being. We can co create a new reality of peace here on this beautiful earth. We can heal our wounds and those of our ancestral line, and we can bless this place where we are planted. What better way to bless Earth than to bless the place and the spirits around us? And you are so held in this work, so supported by the spirits of the natural world around you, by your ancestors, by your guiding allies, by the Universe itself. All That Is wishes to help you. Happy Winter Solstice, Happy Alban Arthan! We had a doubleheader ceremony with a couple who are trained in Andean shamanism. We started off the evening with a Druid Solstice celebration, toasted the Yule log and then finished off the evening with an Andean Solstice ceremony, followed by snacks. It was powerfully lovely. I am thankful to our hosts for sharing their space, and to everyone who showed up and participated! At the winter solstice, we celebrate the rebirth of the sun on the longest night of the year. And we release things that we have mourned. Burning the Yule log symbolizes setting the new sun free and releasing. Vanavond vier ik Midwinter/Yule met mijn gezin bij een vuurtje met een grote pan soep en pizza's van de bbq. Een klein vuurritueel en een mooi verhaal horen daar ook bij. Voor mij loopt Midwinter of Yule over in het Kerstfeest. Het één sluit het ander niet uit. Door het vieren van Midwinter zet ik een proces in gang voor het afsluiten van het jaar. In de dagen tussen Midwinter en Oud en Nieuw geef ik ruimte aan het proces van loslaten en mezelf voorbereiden op een nieuwe jaarcyclus met nieuwe mogelijkheden. Met het vieren van Oud en Nieuw sluit ik dat proces af en stap ik het nieuwe jaar in. Zo verweef ik oude feesten met de huidige tradities. Of je nu Midwinter viert, Kerstmis of allebei, ik wens jou en je dierbaren een mooie afsluiting van het Jaarwiel toe en een geweldige start van de nieuwe. Up early for a superb Solstice sunrise with nacreous clouds, taken from Cairnpapple Hill this morning. With the Winter Solstice occurring at 3.27 this morning, today was the first sunrise - with its promise of a minute more sunlight each day! As the sun rose, more and more people arrived on the hill, some with drums and smudge sticks, all with a quiet smile and a friendly greeting. The amazing display of clouds, colour and light was truly uplifting!
