As life swirls around us, evoking feelings and emotions, thoughts & reactions it is very easy to place our attention outside ourselves & blame what is happening TO US as the cause of our unrest. When we feel sensation inside our body, we want to blame & wrestle with the outside stimuli trying to mold it into something that is more manageable, less painful, easier for us to bear. We have been trained to believe that when we are upset about another's words and actions, that we need to change them, rather than ourselves. We have been told that we can or cannot do something based on the circumstances that we are currently living in and we have allowed ourselves to buy into these perceived beliefs for no other reason than we have not learned how to be with ALL of ourselves. When we are caught in these stories we find ourselves, again, fighting for our limitations, not even realizing what we are doing. Yet sweet one, the truth is everything that is happening, is just happening. It is what you BELIEVE about what is happening that creates your internal experiences and fuels the fire within you and keeps you stuck, blaming, fighting, waiting to be rescued. You are the one that brings the meaning to the events and situations in your life, based on your own past and the stories that live inside you about the way the world works. Freedom from this battle does not come from changing the outside world, it arrives when we learn that the true war is the one within us. It is found between the lines, threaded through the very fabric of our cells and our existence. It is in the dismantling of our internal landscape of conditioned structures that have evolved through our own experiences, through our own frenzied attempts to stay safe, to be heard, to be seen, to be loved. Only when we choose to wake up and lay down the torn and tired and tattered clothes we have been wearing and reveal the truth of our hearts, when we realize that because someone, somewhere long ago, told us who we are, does not mean anything about our true self or what is possible for us, then can we find the courage to let the storm rage around us, and know that the battle is already won.

THE DIVISION BETWEEN SHAMANIC REALMS MATTER! Indigenous shamanic traditions usually do not draw the same kind of clear lines between the realms that we do in this modern approach to shamanic work. There are good reasons for this. In modern times, we have changed the middle-world. And in turn, the new, human-created middle-world has changed us. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors, the original animists and shamanic practitioners, lived in nature, as part of nature, not separate from it. It’s a different world today. While most of us live in towns and cities, even those of us who live in the country live in an environment that is highly domesticated (only 2% of the world’s vertebrate biomass is still wild)! 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱. Today, the middle-world is full of all the human-created thought-forms of modern-day life. Hunter-gatherers didn’t have to worry about things such as mobile phones, computers, the internet, bank accounts, television, newspapers, religions, political parties, school and exams, pensions, employment, consumer goods, and money worries. All these things have an energy to them, an energy that will be encountered and experienced in middle-world journeying, something our ancestors didn’t have to face. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 On top of all these external differences there is the issue about the enormous underworld that we have created; the personal and collective unconscious full of unintegrated psychic energies that again will be encountered when doing middle-world work these days. All this poses new challenges and makes the modern middle-world a very different place from the one original animists were familiar with, which is why these days it is crucial to be clear what realm we are in when journeying. Has this ever happened to you? 🤣 I spent the better part of spring trying to discourage squirrels from digging in flower pots. Then, I had to dissuade a pair of mourning doves from building a nest on one of the plant stands. And just when I thought I was in the clear… I noticed a robin. The male had been singing his beautiful song every morning in a tree outside. And apparently, he hit the right notes, because Lady Robin showed up, and after the wooing, has built a nest on the gutter under an overhang. 🤭 After watching her labor so hard building the nest, I decided to just surrender the balcony to nature for a while. I peek through the blinds now and then, and she gives me a stern look letting me know she is not pleased with my intrusion. So, the picture is grainy and taken by phone. Now we both await the arrival of her hatchlings. She sitting on eggs, and me keeping an eye out for anything that could disturb her in her incredibly important job, and feeling more nervous by the day. Lol.🥹 Her arrival has made me stop and think deeper, and reflect on all the little things we often don’t even notice, that go on all around us. Beautiful, hopeful, wonderful things. Robin Medicine in shamanism speaks to renewal energy, and awakening from old patterns. They inspire us to listen to our inner wisdom which brings enlightenment and healing. They are a symbol of growth and positive change. I can skip a few weeks being out on the balcony to offer mama bird the chance at peace while she ushers in new life. It’s the least I can do. Sometimes the delicate strands of life’s web break and sometimes they are made stronger by our efforts.
