I am reflecting on The Hierophant and its relationship to the sign of Taurus. The Hierophant represents leadership and moral authority. This could be religious leaders, teachers, or political figures we believe in. This card also speaks about fitting ourselves into predetermined societal codes and ways of being. Whether we answer to a higher power, or answer to another type of moral code, I think there is wisdom in learning to be our own moral authority. It’s impossible to ignore the religious imagery of this card- as the hierophant is some sort of religious leader or papal figure. I have trouble relating this to Taurus. Taurus is slow and steady going, and is all about indulging in the simple pleasures of life. These are not qualities that I recognize in organized religion. However, both Taurus and traditional structures or authority are resistant to change and prefer to stick with what is tried and true. It’s extremely hard to change deep rooted ideas and long-standing traditions overnight. (Is this actually numerology? Nah. But it's how people are searching for this concept, so there you go.) With 78 cards in a Tarot deck, the task of memorizing them as a beginner may seem daunting. This is why I propose a more manageable approach: understanding the narrative within each suit. Similar to the major arcana, the minor arcana tells the story of The Fool moving through the deck. Each suit represents a different theme in his journey (the wands represent his passions, the swords represent his mind, the cups represent his emotions, and the pentacles represent his earthly materials). You can extrapolate a pattern by understanding what each number represents in the deck. By thinking of each card as a component of a story, you will be able to use the context to remember what the card means. The full explanation is on my blog. Did you know before the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909) almost all Tarot decks had no images on the Minor Arcana cards. Most decks simply used the suit icons in the quantity of the cards number. So for example a Three of Cups was simply a card with three cups on it. No people or scenes. The only exception to this (as far as I know) was the Sola Busca deck. It is clear that Pixie took inspiration from this deck for some cards. While Arthur Waite gave her instructions for the Major Arcana cards the Minors are believed to be her own creation. This change to pictured Minor Arcana cards definitely makes them easier to interpret in my opinion. This is a big part of why the RWS deck is so influential on all decks since. Almost any deck with detailed Minors were likely influenced by the RWS deck. It is also interesting to reflect on the fact that in many ways this means how we interpret the Minor is heavily impacted by Pamela’s interpretation. This is a poor combination of influences, which the title of the card confirms. The 7 of Disks represents the total loss of all at stake, for lack of endurance and effort. Take a moment to really look at the minor arcana cards. Put them in order from Ace to Ten for each suit and try to see how they connect from one to the next, like a story unfolding in front of you. Compared to the suits I showed in Part 1, these two journeys end rather negatively. Nobody goes through life via the path of just one suit, which is why a mix of suits usually appears during a reading. But is Tarot trying to tell us something with these four journeys? Is there an underlying message? I find it interesting that maybe Tarot is warning us not to focus solely on that creative, fiery wands energy because it will leave you feeling burdened, overwhelmed and in constant need of escape. Or, with the Swords, that if you’re so in your own head that it ultimately causes your own failure. Is Tarot trying to remind us that you will feel success and wealth in different ways if you follow a more grounded, earthy path like I’m the Pentacles. Or maybe that if you have control over your emotions and are available and loving to others, you will end up with love and happiness? Any thoughts? My weekend cards made me compare Magician cards… The Magician card holds a lot of juju within a tarot deck. The Magician is all about manifestation, resourcefulness, and the crossover of the spiritual and material realms. It’s common to see this card shown as a figure with vast knowledge, and power out the wazoo. Usually he’ll (usually a ‘he’), be standing by a table that holds the tools representing the four suits of the tarot—symbolising the elements and the Magician's ability to harness their energies. This card wants you to recognise your potential for manifestation and creativity, emphasising the importance of confidence and action as you run down your goals and dreams. The Magician is connected to both the divine, and the earth, showcasing the balance needed from both so you can achieve your goals and dreams. This card –it’s all about empowerment and initiation as you journey using the power of tarot.
