Onto the cards. The creator has switched some of the Suit names (but in a pretty intuitive way): Swords have become Thunder, and Pents have become Stones. Similarly, the court cards have changed to Seed, Root, Flower, and Harvest (instead of the classic P,K,Q,K) “representative of the internal stages of growth with a direct connection to nature, and a conscious distancing from colonial symbols“. There’s also a recurring theme of rainbows across the deck, which adds to its bright, hopeful feel, and almost childlike joy and wonder in the world. The little fishy Fool is just so cute! Kinda gormless looking – which I like in a Fool – but the creator points out how “baby salmon do[…] not hesitate. In the same way that his DNA guides his life, following your life-path is also in yours“. I love how joyous all the art is in this deck, but especially here in the creatrix’s version of the Hanged Man. I get the card has links to Odin hanging on Yggdrasil and is thus related to sacrifice and can be Very Serious (though not necessarily negative) etc., but some Hanged Man cards tend towards the gloomy or the slightly surreal. I love that this card captures the uninhibited carefree joy that can follow upending your world view and turning things on their heads. Then this stately humpback whale is gorgeous as Strength. The card stock is super good quality (thick, mat, sturdy, but also pretty slippy so easy to shuffle with unlike many ‘thick card’ finishes), and the sort of dusty gold edging is much more resistant to dings and chips than its more glit edged cousins. The card back design is outrageously beautiful, and the box is also a total beaut 😍. Inside the box you get a small black & white, words-only guidebook with info on each card, but you can also order a full sized colour guidebook from Mari in the Sky’s website if you wish. A quick note here to big up Little Red Tarot, who I ordered my copy from here in the UK. Look at that lush packaging and the little goodies I got sent with the deck. I’m almost done re-writing and uploading my old deck reviews to the blog (two to go after this one!), and it seemed like a really appropriate time to post my review of The #GentleTarot by Mari In The Sky @mariinthesky (the publishing house of creator and artist Mariza Ryce Aparicio-Tovar), as the second edition is shortly about to launch on Kickstarter (pre-launch link in creator’s bio). A quick note to say that the second edition looks fab, and: NO BORDERS! I love borderless cards, so if the deck appeals to you, I’d hold out and order the second edition. I’m sure you could get all sorts of extra goodies too, as the creator has a very organised web shop etc. so I anticipate a very professional KS campaign! The Gentle Tarot, is, unsurprisingly, a really beautiful and gentle deck. It’s really calming to work with, and has a very ‘good vibes only’ air. I’m a bit of a miserable old cynic, but even I find myself charmed by it. The creator is from Mexican (Wixárika and Chichimeca) and North American (Mohawk) lineages, and states she was “raised… with practices of honouring the land and relationships with the natural world”, which really shines through in the deck. Mari In The Sky also donates a percentage of profits from the deck to a range of important causes (mainly around nature and migration), so, if that mirrors your political views (spoiler: it does mine!) you get to feel really positive about buying the deck :-). I feel a lot of depictions focus on the negative aspects of this card (trickery, deception, theft), but this one makes room for the positives too. The suit of Cups is illustrated by Eden Cooke, and I really love their art style. Delicate and nostalgic, like something from a half-remembered childhood fairytale. The two birds nestled into each other in their nest is so adorable, and the messy superficiality of the Seven of Cups captures the spirit of the card. The Ten shows two lovers safely wrapped in the octopus’ embrace. I’m not 100% there with the symbolism, but I think the drawing is just absolutely gorgeous, and the gently glowing jellyfish give me that whimsical HEA feeling I think a Ten of Cups should give! 🌙 How are you feeling with this earthy Taurus New Moon energy my love? This New Moon is a challenging one for me. I have a rather fraught relationship with pleasure, abundance and receiving (what woman doesn’t am I right!?) I’ve been feeling really heavy, lethargic, depleted even, these past few days and today I feel especially tender. My to-do list is going to have to wait. Rather than pushing forwards, I made myself a pillow tower and sank myself over it, heart and hips open. I sipped some cacao with rose petals. I lit my favourite candle. Swipe for spread Interpretation of my card pull In the life I need to heal from most, I was an intelligent, female, air sign (Queen of Swords) probably in early adulthood or over. Fears/phobias stemming from that life could involve someone chasing me, riots (based on the traditional RWS image), fighting off my enemies, and water since this figure is traversing a treacherous path that could end with me falling in the water. I do have a phobia of water in this life. Recurring wound that needs healing related to that life – 7 of Cups – psychosis or fear of psychosis. Oh, I know which life this is now – I was staked outside my family home for days and was deemed to be mentally unfit as a 20-year-old who had been caught with herbs and runes. I was branded a witch and taken to the water for a witch test. For those who read my books, The Divining Sisters Series, this is Addie’s storyline in 1692 during the Salem Witch Trials, so I write about this life a lot, which means it’s very significant for this life. That life is impacting me now by keeping me from completing karmic lessons (The World), possibly due to these fears. I avoid crowds due to that life because a mob followed the wagon that took me to the water’s edge for the witch test and a crowd watched as I was drowned in the dunking chair. But I did learn a significant lesson in that life related to injustice (Justice card). I didn’t confess even while being drowned. That feels significant. Maybe staying true to who I was even in the face of such injustice and a wrongful conviction so to speak even though there was no trial. Maybe that’s why I fight for justice in this life. A lesson that carried over into this life to finish would be related to trusting that the universe will catch me this time (The Star card). It feels like I was really hopeless in that life due to how things turned out (very unjustly). Continued in comments…
One of my favourite cards from the #OstaraTarot. The Moth High Priestess is generally badass, and I really appreciate the use of so much clever symbolism on this card. We have the moth itself, a creature most active during that magical, liminal, in-between time of dusk, as we cross the border from day to night. The moth is really such a great way to represent the High Priestess’s position as a conduit between the external world and our internal mysteries, as well as her focus on intuition, and the importance of stillness and patience. The Moth High Priestess is also holding a pomegranate, with its call back to the legend of Persephone, another Queen of the Inbetween; her life divided between the Underworld and Earth (I write about this at great, rambling length in my High Priestess blog post if you’re interested!) I’m not wild about either the card stock (too gloss, too slippery, subject to the standard dings and dents that effect most glossy gilt edge cards) or the box. The box itself is cute, but the cards jiggle about inside (despite the flimsy plastic card divider – ribbons work so much better for this) and get (further) bashed, as well as mixed up (not necessarily a bad thing, obvs). So if this is going to be a working deck for you, I’d ditch the box and carry them in a pouch or custom card box. The guidebook is really beautifully designed and set out, with a double page spread for each Major and a single page for each Minor, containing the standard key words, and specific + general card meaning, both upright and reversed. Throwback to my review of the #OstaraTarot which I just expanded and reposted on my blog. One of the first decks I bought (after a vintage Morgan Greer deck) was this deck created by the four-illustrator team of @bardillustration, @edencooke, @julia_iredale, and Molly Applejohn. It’s a really gentle deck, and was largely pretty beginner friendly. The deck is a collaboration between four artists, who met each other at art school (love this!), and on the whole this works well. One artist takes charge of each of the four Minor suits, and each Minor is assigned an animal (or family). The Majors are likewise divided between the four creators. On the plus side, this gives each suit a really unique and bespoke vibe, which is particularly helpful when you’re learning, as the stylistic differences aid recognising the symbolic differences between the suits. Occasionally when I’m doing a spread, I’ll find some of the differences in drawing style a bit jarring, but, tbh, as someone who loves a good magpie deck, it doesn’t bother me! If you’re someone who likes uniformity in your deck images though, you might struggle more with this. The deck generally sticks to the traditional RWS symbolism, “while also exploring themes of wilderness, surrealism, and feminine intuition“. Yesterday a Christian man called my tarot beliefs “black magic” and “the devils work”. I responded to him with kindness and understanding and instead of using it as a reason to run from them, it brought me closer to my cards and our journey together. This is a belief system and it has every right to have the same respect as any other religion, spiritual practice, or belief system. Throwback to my review of the #BrokenMirrorTarot which I just expanded and reposted on my blog. This was the first deck I ordered and didn’t imediately love (and the first Kickstarter Deck I had Backers’ Remorse over once it arrived!), and, after having it in my collection for two years, and working with it a fair bit, I’m still largely ambivalent about it. My ambivalence mainly stems from just how poorly my idea of what the cards would be liked mapped on to the reality. Online the card design looked really vibrant and bright – like sunlight streaming through an old stained glass window. In reality the cards are kinda muddy and sludgy, and the very muted colour palette just blends in to one greenish blob a lot of the time. In a real stained glass window the lead is really important: it makes the glass colours really pop. I think part of the issue is there isn’t much “lead” in these images, so the colours tend to bleed together. And here’s my favourite card from The Journey Tarot, The (High) Priestess. I love that she’s in what appears to be a library, but she’s looking beyond the books, into the heart of the secret, intuitive, instinctual knowledge that lives inside all of us. There are some things that can’t be taught; some knowledge that cannot be contained and passed on inside books. There are some things we just know. In the still, silent core of our souls. This is a truly stunning, high quality deck that you can tell was a real labour of love for its creator. So if you like the look of it, I def recommend saving up to buy it, despite the fairly hefty price tag! What happens when burning Tarot cards? 🤔 We, humans, experience grief when we lose something or someone that we loved and cared about. When we become familiar with our cards and use them regularly, we become attached to them. That is my case. For me, each deck is like a dear friend to me….. I have to admit, the Hanged Man in The Journey Deck isn’t particularly intuitive to me. The creator explains, “if you jump in, you will drown in the tumultuous waters”, thus stressing the need to wait and reflect before taking action, but I wouldn’t necessarily take that from looking at this card. However, it remains one of my favourites because it’s just such a bloody gorgeous drawing! Forgot to post this yesterday! I was with family that was visiting from out of town and got carried away with making memories. Below is the card I pulled yesterday, I’ll post todays a little later. Day 12: six of Pentacles. “Cultivating compassion and generosity.” It encapsulates acts of kindness and the concept of good karma. This card reminds you that the true quality of a person is not measured by how much they suck up to the influential people of society. Instead, it is measured by how they treat people of whom they stand to gain nothing from.“ The Six of Pentacles can often signify that another person may be playing the part of an angel for you. Offerings of assistance, opportunities and support may appear from a benefactor that wishes to invest in you. Allow yourself to receive when these magical helpers appear. Being able to receive is an indication that you feel worthy.“ Yesterday was such an amazing time with my family full of love, generosity, and optimism. We celebrated together in memory of my grandpa and ate polish food cooked by my incredible cousin who I haven’t seen in over a decade. This card helped me so much and gave me a positive start to my day, so positive that I forgot to post about it! The gorgeous illustration for the Page (Acolyte) of Cups gives me big mermaids-in-Atlantis vibes, and definitely is evocative of the idea of emerging intuition, your subconscious skills and abilities slowly rising from the depths as you figure things out. The black clouds blocking out the sun to signify the apathy and lethargy of the Five of Cups are fabulously creepy. And given the bath is my Absolute #1 Happy Place, I’ll always be a fan of a steaming hot full bath as a symbol of physical indulgence and pleasure, as in this Nine of Cups. Self Assessment & Advice Spread from @labyrinthostarot 1. what are my worst qualities ? who am i at my worst ? 2. what are my best qualities ? who am i at my best ? 3. given strengths and weaknesses , what should i be doing ? this is my third day working with tarot in the morning and i burst into tears when i saw 8🗡️ the context for this spread is my recent feeling of being stuck . there are big changes on the horizon for me if only i would reach out to grab them . and i’m not . i’ve been feeling stuck and lost in overthinking and overpreparing and have begun to acquire STUFF as a coping mechanism . i think i need to quit my job and move out of my apartment and dedicate myself to creative practice . mentally i’m okay with this , but emotionally and spiritually i am apparently really hanging on . my interpretation 1. weaknesses - GETTING STARTED ON MATERIAL ENDEAVORS . beginning the work . believing in material change in my life . 2. strengths - my intuition . ability to hold space . seeing and bringing out the best in people 3. advice - remove the blindfold off my own damn eyes . release limiting beliefs . loved this bit from @biddytarot page on 8🗡️ “the water pooled at her feet suggests that her intuition might see what her eyes cannot” 🙃 i will post spreads from the past few days as well . everything is pointing to meditation and growing my intuition . so grateful for this amazing tool and the incredible resources available #tarotspread #learningtarot #queenofcups #8ofswords #aceofpentacles
