✨Mental Health Awareness Week✨ Until it happens to you or someone close to you I think we all take our mental health for granted. I certainly did, I was always the strong one in the family, the person that would do alright, until I didn’t. It felt like from nowhere my whole world came crashing down (This was actually happening across a long period of time prior) I’d left a toxic marriage and for the first time in my adult life I was alone! 2020 quickly became the worst year of my life, I don’t remember half of it still! I spent most of my time drunk, walking miles, not eating for days and thinking of all the ways I didn’t want to be here anymore. The light literally left my eyes and I dropped a lot of weight fast 😔 Luckily I got help, I was extremely poorly and was eventually diagnosed with a serious mental health disorder. I’ve now learned to live with that condition and manage it daily. It may have taken me 4 years but I can finally say I’m happy, healthy and thriving. 🥰🙌🏻 It’s so important to take care of our mental health exactly like we do our physical health. Just sit with it Some days are harder than others, you can go weeks sometimes even months and not think about it and can be completely at peace. Then out of know where it just hits you like a ton of bricks!! The wind gets knocked out of yo. With it being *Mental Health Awareness Week* I’m reminded of the journey I have been on and overcoming the grip of an eating disorder. It’s was a battle, both physical and mental, but I stand here today as living proof: there IS hope and recovery is possible. Going back to basics, remembering my ‘why’, and prioritizing self-care have been at the forefront of my actions. Life loses its sparkle when we’re stuck in restriction. Balance is key. So here’s to embracing the journey, finding our balance, and spreading the message that life isn’t that fun when you go to extremes. I encourage you to challenge your abilities on the daily and show yourself just how capable you are. Don’t forget to enjoy the process along the way. It's mental health awareness week this week. You'd be amazed at how many people still don't talk about it or accept that it's even a thing (I know, really)! MH related services are at breaking point in this country and I suspect many others. If you know someone who is struggling take a bit of time out to connect with them. Let them know you are there for them. Sometimes you don't even need to speak to them, it's amazing how much of a difference just knowing someone is there for you can make. Sit with them. Give them a hug. Be present for them. Above all be kind. You never know the effect you may have on someone. It could mean the difference between life and death. You weren’t born a people pleaser. There are likely real and understandable origins of why you feel a sense of pressure and responsibility to attune to everyone’s needs and feelings while neglecting your own. Can you resonate with any of these possibilities? Can you give yourself some compassion and understanding for what that must have been like for you growing up? Or what it’s like to process these dynamics now? Often doing this can be a good step towards changing the behavior/trying to address the tendencies. P.S when I say “parents” in the post, I am also including caregivers, guardians, whoever it was that responsible for raising you. Also, these dynamics might have taken place with 1 parent or both, and the goal isn’t to BLAME anyone, just to understand. These aren’t the only possibilities, but the most frequent I see in my work, as well as read about. You may identify with bits and pieces of several listed here, maybe even a combination of some! Let’s talk hyper-independence: Defined: Hyper-independence refers to individual attempts to be fully independent in all things, even when it is not helpful to do so or when they truly need help or support from others. (verywellmind.com) We usually become hyper-independent due to past trauma experiences. Example: you learned to distrust others (even the people who were supposed to keep you safe) so you only feel safe & comfortable relying on yourself. Example: your needs (physically, emotionally, mentally, etc.) were often neglected growing up, so you’ve learned that the only one you can depend on is yourself. In terms of treatment: trauma-informed therapy is typically the way to go. It’s a lot of processing and unpacking and relearning. It’s hard - but it’s not impossible. I can't lie, I've been guilty of not following these steps over the years, and sure, I got some results, but I could have gotten better results by following these simple steps. 1. 💤 Quality sleep boosts metabolism, aids muscle recovery, enhances mood, and sharpens cognitive function, crucial for achieving optimal fat loss and muscle gain. 2. 🏋‍♂️ Weight lifting builds strength and muscle mass, increases metabolism, improves bone density, boosts confidence, and enhances overall physical health and wellbeing. But, listen to your body, if you're on a calorie deficit and you're training hard, you're already burning the candle at both ends; take a rest day if your body asks for it. 3. 🥗 Eating a nutrient-rich diet fuels energy, supports metabolism, strengthens immunity, promotes longevity, and optimizes overall health and vitality. Track your macros and make sure you get a good amount of protein and dietary fat in your diet. 4. 🍔 Exercise can't compensate for poor diet; balanced nutrition fuels fitness goals, enhances performance, and ensures long-term health and wellness. Current Stats: Built like a grown ass woman 💁🏾‍♀️ Quick Week 2 check in on my little journey…👀 Busy week! But I was able to make it all of my appointments/scheduled things. This is a big win because usually there’s a mini crisis that ensues and I need to cancel everything. Even got all my movement in!🎉 Food stuff is still a little weird. Definitely time to reevaluate my approach. 🤔 There was lots of consistency so that’s a win. On the upside, I’ve finally been able to give myself some grace about where I’m at as far as my current physique. I’ve been at the “acceptance” stage for a while and I’m finding that there’s layers to it. A combination of being so body focused for so long and a sprinkle of a little MI spice makes for a wild relationship with the body. 🙃 With that being said, I feel pretty good. I’m still very strong (can easily squat over 200lbs without consistent lifting to be exact 😏), I can run, I can do asana, I can teach…all the things. Okay, that’s it. On Mondays we chill in hammocks and look up at the trees ❤️ We are on week 8 of the Wild Ways Well project, I've been asking about hammocks from about week 1. Today we finally got the hammocks out and I abandoned everyone else to chill in my hammock. I have never reviewed a book before I've finished reading it I've also never actively addressed my mental health struggles beyond some self-deprecating humour, so there's a first time for everything 😅 Some time ago, I believed me and my mental health demons had reached an agreement that as long as I acknowledged they would always be there, I could live with them. Well, you can also choose to live with an insufferable flatmate that never washes up or refuses to take the bins out. Sure, you can put up with them because the alternative is an uncomfortable confrontation, but your quality of life will slowly deteriorate until you just can't take it anymore. This year, I made the decision to have that uncomfortable confrontation with myself - the decision to address the quality of my mental health and take steps to improve my relationship with it. It just so happens that @danielhowell practical mental health guide You Will Get Through This Night was released in paperback around the same time. I have never read anything that could be considered a "self help" book before, mostly because books have always been a way for me to escape my mental health struggles. It's also hard for me to take advice from anyone who doesn't know me, no matter how qualified they are. Of course, Dan doesn't know me but he's also not a faceless therapist or well intentioned stranger. He's someone I have grown with and seen grow for years, relating more and more to the journey he has shared. You Will Get Through This Night is the accumulation of this. Relatable examples and simple practical advice given from a familiar perspective. The reason I am sharing my thoughts on this book now is because I know it's one I am not going to be finished with for a long time. Not only does the format of it encourage you to come back whenever you need it but, for the first time, I'm not looking for a quick mental health "fix". I have accepted that the night truly is darkest just before the dawn and some nights will be longer than others. But, there will always be a dawn, always a tomorrow and always another chance 🖤
