My lovely Year One groups at The Priory School in Christchurch did all things ‘Rainbow’ today in their Relax Kids Sessions. We moved our bodies like the weather, played a rainbow game, stretched our bodies, had our mindful moments with our bell and bubbles, continued with our beautiful rainbow massage, spoke about our favourite colours and how we feel when we are surrounded by them. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family and it is something I have been conscious of when it comes to exercise and diet. . I also don’t think we can boil this down to nutrition and exercise. The role of genes, environment, and their interplay dictate much. Lifestyle choices may be significantly more potent for a variety of health issues. Cue the Diabetes Prevention Program study that showed lifestyle intervention reducing incidence by 58% compared to 31% with metformin. Stress is another HUGE one! . What can you do? . Creating lasting change requires more than just willpower; it involves forming sustainable habits. . 1.Start Small: Make incremental changes rather than overhauling your entire lifestyle at once. WELLNESS WEDNESDAY HOW ARE YOU FEELING? Let's do a body scan meditation today. No one knows and understands your body better than YOU. Doing a body scan meditation every once in a while gives your body a chance to really let you know how it's feeling and if any problem areas need to be addressed. How it works: Simply lay down for 15 to 20 minutes and bring your attention to your feet, ankles, calves, thighs, hips, stomach, back, chest etc., etc., until you reach your head. Give your body time to respond, as you may not be used to focusing on individual parts in this way. You may have thoughts of I'm tired, confused, stuck, stressed, exhausted etc. Once you've worked through your body, write down the messages from your body parts (because they do speak to you through aches, pains and silent screams) so that you have reference to work with over the coming days or weeks. When your body or mind has blocks, herbs can help you open up and release tensions. ***Make a note of what you used and what date. I noticed a woman in Asda a couple of days ago who was popping food in her trolley, throughout the aisle she kept saying ‘I’ll get some of those because they’re free’ and ‘I can have those’ and ‘they’re free as my healthy option’! Her entire food shop was being governed by the rules of whatever diet she’s following. This is not to shame any woman doing the same but it is to say that just because something has become normalised doesn’t mean it’s normal. So often we believe we need the rules to keep us ‘on track’ and have a fear of losing control but when you heal whatever it is that has you subconsciously reaching for food to soothe or control you realise you never needed rules in the first place. When it comes to rules with food I’ve had them all from cheat days to intermittent fasting to calorie counting to demonising foods altogether. I thought I was alone but it turns out it’s pretty common for food to dominate your thoughts (whatever your size) and to have the belief that your self worth is tied to your appearance. Imagine a life where these food habits are no longer, you can choose the food your body really wants, enjoy the meal, stop when you’re satisfied and move on.
