Are you the kind of runner who immediately flips to the last page of your training plan and then has an existential crisis about how intimidating those runs and workouts look? Are you focusing SO MUCH on what you can't yet do that it's completely derailing what you're doing RIGHT NOW? A common question I get is "How will I KNOW I can do it? How will I KNOW I can run the distance/hold that pace/be mentally ready for the challenges of my race?" And my response is always the same: there's no such thing as a 100% guarantee, BUT you achieve those goals the same way that you achieve every other goal: you do it one step at a time (sometimes literally!) You prove to yourself over & over & over again in training that yes, you can run a little farther. Yes, you can run a little faster, and yes, you can be mentally gritty enough to handle what is coming your way! Focusing way too far ahead is COUNTERPRODUCTIVE!! When I first started running, I couldn't even run a mile. If I'd been obsessively focused on a giant future goal, like running a marathon, when I couldn't even run a mile? When running AT ALL felt like the hardest thing in the world to do? I'll be honest, I probably would have felt so demoralized about how challenging it felt, I might have given up. Instead, I took it one day, one run, one mile at a time. I took small steps. First I ran a 5k. Then I ran a 10k. Then I ran a half marathon. And each step up that staircase, each day that I proved to myself that yes, I can do a little more, yes I can do these things that previously felt impossible, only fueled my confidence and belief in my ability. It's good to have big goals. It's important to have challenging goals. But it's NOT good to overly fixate on that big future goal and directly compare it to where you are today (compare & despair, friends!) in a way that only makes you feel defeated. The most magical thing about running is that it turns The Impossible into The Possible. You win. We win. Remember your why. That was my mantra for this race. Last year, BK half was my first race back post-injury (London). That race I ran in celebration of running. I was just happy to be running/walking again. Moments where I wanted to push myself I held back. My mind was ready but I remembered my body can only do what it can do at that time. BK half ‘23 was a celebration race. I was proud that I finished strong. This year I ran BK with that same mantra. REMEMBER YOUR WHY. Some people asked me “why are you doing this?” or told me “you can skip this one.” I understand how back to back races can appear to be a bit much. From full to half twice over, I get that. Running is my place of comfort & inspiration. Running is my home. With that said, sometimes life happens and unexpected events can change your perspective. For me, this race went from race race to a celebration of life. I took that energy and put it into my miles Saturday. When my body was feeling tired I told myself “remember your why.” When the heat snuck up on me and I felt my pace drop again, I told myself “remember your why.” When I saw that finish line I told myself “remember your why” and pushed myself to finish strong. I crossed that finish line like I won the whole thing. I felt unstoppable. I am so grateful for the gift of running. Thank you @nyrr for hosting these amazing events and continuing to inspire us all. You know I took my medal home to show my family some BK love and fed my medal all the NYC meals. Starting with the 9th Ave Food Festival. Congratulations runners. Y’all showed up. Having a ‘mud’ life crisis over here 🤣 Skipped my long run this weekend since I just got an iron infusion and really want it to take, but man my body was not happy with running. More like my head. I was so dizzy the whole run that I only managed to run for an hour through the mud. The temps were perfect but the head refused. Despite what you may have read or heard, running with Diastasis Recti is not a big “no no.” In fact, running with diastasis recti is safe and usually does not cause pain. And you can rehab your Diastasis Recti (DR) while still running.⁠ ⁠ I connected with Celeste Goodson, founder of @recorefitness about Diastasis Recti. If you don’t know Celeste, she & her programs have helped scores of recreational and PROFESSIONAL runners return to running postpartum—including by addressing DR. ⁠ ⁠ Personally, I have been running with DR for 7 years & have recently worked with a pelvic floor PT to retrain by core to support my running. It’s never too late! Yes!! Ran a 5k without pain! 😃 It has been trial and error with the knee injury. Every training or exercise I did I listened carefully to my body and the level of pain. 😶 As I wished to play 4 tennis matches (in two days), after one match I had to make the decision not to play any more. 😓 So until today I only did my swimming exercise everyday and I think that helped me a lot in recovery. And this morning I ran a 5k at a normal pace, without any pain! Yes. Feels like I just can’t catch a break lately. 😞 The first 8 weeks of training went off without a hitch. Everything was going perfectly. I was making incredible progress and pushing myself harder than I ever have. Them week 9 I got a nasty upper respiratory cold. Took me out for 4/5 runs that week. Week 10 went great, but I was incredibly sore after my 17 mile long run, which made for a fairly miserable week 11 on very tired legs. Then, my week 11, 18 mile long run was going perfect until I ran out of water and my stomach couldn’t handle my gels. Y’all already heard that story. Then this past week, week 12, I got another round of that upper respiratory cold (it was even worse the second go around) which also knocked me out for 4/5 runs. I started feeling a lot better yesterday, but have been out of commission with a migraine all day and now I’m developing a cold sore. It’s so frustrating. I’ve been crushing this training cycle, my legs are responding so well and I’m making major improvements. I’m pushing myself, and being smart with my recovery, fueling, and hydration. But I can’t help getting sick, and that’s the part that’s frustrating. I’m a little paranoid now thinking about what will happen if I get sick again. Just trying to put this behind me and focus on what’s ahead. This upcoming week is a big push week for me, and come Saturday I’ll be knocking off my first of two 20 milers this training cycle. I’ve mentioned it before, but my training plan is blocked into 6, 3 week chunks. This is the start of my final 3 week chunk before I hit the 3 week taper. Absolutely WILD to think about. Mine and Kyle’s schedules are also going to be crazy with lots of travel over the next few weeks, so I’m just focusing on taking care of myself as best as possible throughout it all. What an enjoyable morning running the @capitalcitymarathon half marathon, the weather was absolutely perfect and the spectators along this course are pretty awesome! Raced this half as a training run for my full next month so the plan was first 10k marathon pace and the second half step on the gas a little more with each mile. It was a pretty hilly course with also some nice downhills so I was so encouraged with how my fitness responded with in the race. I felt so good! This being my very first half marathon I ever ran in 2017 it felt pretty special to be back and reminisce along the course today! Finishing time 1:45:10 4th in my age group😃 Thanks @dr.asher.runs for always being the extra special piece to my training journey!

Today was hot 🔥 and I questioned this whole running thing - but without this running thing, I wouldn't have met all these wonderful friends. Another half done ✔️ and just really inspired by everyone in the running community, in our running group and all others and all the athletes participating in these events. Today wasn't a great race for me but also wasn't a terrible race. I walked a super decent amount but also the first couple of miles felt great. Consistency is key. Family fun race day! The tradition continues for the Bernard family to participate and cheer in the Heritage Winery 5k race! Thanks Dad, Brian and Eric for cheering! Mom we missed you (she was recovering from an illness). This year my 9 year old Addison joined us and my 13 year old nephew Tyler joined for the 2nd year. Soren wasn’t feeling well so she jumped in and killed it! They were both so FAST💨 on a challenging terrain and hilly course! Tyler PRd in 19:47 at 6:21 pace and placed 2nd finisher overall and 1st male overall! 🤩 Addison placed 2nd female overall and 8th finisher overall in 22:11 at 7:09 pace 🤩 Liz and I were both happy to accept the kids bottle of wine prize on their behalf 🤣🌟🙌

Week 1️⃣5️⃣ … just one week left! Almost time! The weather is looking a bit warm, so my goals range from a PR to maintaining within 10 minutes of my PR. I know the heat and sun drains me, so we’ll see. Monday - rest day 😴 Tuesday - rest day, was going to run with Daniel and then we didn’t end up running Wednesday - early morning run with Brenna, then celebrated Buffy’s birthday after work Thursday - tempo run with Daniel on the track. Full sunshine ☀️ Friday - thought it was going to rain, but I’m glad it didn’t. Easy 30 minute run around The Bridge Saturday - Fairmont long run with Daniel and Sarah Sunday - last speed work, 1 mile tempo and some fartleks, last test of my race day shoe 👟 sunburn 🥵 Total mileage: 3️⃣2️⃣ #Marathoner #BostonQualifier #MorgantownRunning #RADrabbit #BridgeportRunning #MRBRAmbassador

SUNDAY RUN DAY✌🏻This morning we headed out of the city and decided to run the Heritage Parkway Trail in Okotoks, AB. The trail runs along the Sheep River and it’s such a peaceful spot, I absolutely love it out there. I was scheduled to do a 16 km long run, but I only made it about 12 km (7.5 miles) before a storm rolled in and we had to take cover. It’s the time of year where we can get pretty deadly hail storms and it is also tornado season, so I’m not being a baby about it, it’s truly for your own safety to get off the trails and take cover. I’m happy we did because the hail hit the second we made it back to the car. That said, it was a beautiful 12 kms before the storm. Today is my RunAversary! 11 years ago today I ran the Harpoon 5 miler. I knew nothing about running, running culture or racing. I was no nervous and I thought about leaving the race. It was a while scene. I knew I wasn’t doing this again. …..Well, 58 half marathons, 50 states completed, 4 marathons, writing , blogging, and researching on running , becoming a pacer, and countless 5ks,10k, and 1 milers later…🤣🤣. A much better run this morning. I started tentatively after yesterday's scare but thankfully it was a lot better. I had a nice distraction for the first mile and a bit with some serious-looking cyclists coming the other way on the Outlaw Triathlon route. Then I felt confident to speed up for the last 3 miles. 9 miles in total to bring me up to 50 for the week. I'll still be trying to get in touch with the doctor this week though. Congrats to all who ran the Marine Corps Half Marathon today! Woke up to seeing my amazing niece get it done 👏🏽 Super proud of her! I managed 10.5 yesterday and 3.5 today. Thank goodness for @kttape 🙏🏽 Running with an injured calf last month was stupid of me (obvi), so while my calf is totally fine now, my inner knee is still sore. Wearing the KT the last few days has been super helpful. Praying I'm all healed up soon. 3543 days #sober today 🙏🏽
