All smiles during some hot miles at the Cleveland Marathon! It was hot and brutal at the end, but one thing I’ve learned from my coaches at @wahoorun and #teamultra was to smile so big, you convince spectators to want to run. Although I was a little bummed about the heat affecting my goals, I couldn’t stop smiling. I was having a blast and that’s all that matters. My teammates that I’ve met through #teamultra were texting me to keep going the whole time. You guys really kept me going. Thank you! Why do I want to run the @nycmarathon with #teamultra 7.0? Because it made running fun and enJOYable again. Quite a few years ago, when I brought my sister home after visiting her in NYC and noticed she was sick, running sometimes was the only thing that made sense. I used it to escape, clear my head and it helped tremendously, but I lost that spark. When I lost her.. it was my only thing to get away and not face reality. I then had the opportunity to run for her with #teamultra back in 2021 in NYC.. and I have not looked back since. This team brought back the spark. It brought my smile back. Everything that the ribbon stands for, it was bringing into my life. The friends, the enjoyable miles, the memories and the JOY! I can never ever thank @michelobultra for bringing that spark back. ‘My world was turned upside down when my son was involved in a serious accident. It was a terrifying experience that made me realize just how fragile life can be. In that moment, I knew I had to be strong not just for him, but for myself too. As I watched my son fight for his recovery, I couldn't help but feel inspired by his resilience. Yesterday: track workout on the treadmill. It's tough - at this time last year, those 1 km and mile repeats would have been about a minute per mile faster. My PT assures me that all the cross-training I've done since October will pay off; this is my body awkwardly readjusting to running. It’s funny that I’m hoping to win a spot on #teamultra because it was beer that got me into running—and marathoning—in the first place! I was fresh off the heels of my first-ever 10K and feeling pretty stoked about myself! At a party with my fellow teachers the next weekend, after one too many beers, I became convinced that if I could run 6 miles I could *totally* run 26. I mean, that’s how it goes, right? We’d all sign up for a marathon together. That was the plan. But when I mailed in my race registration (yes, I’m that old), I was the only one. But I ran it because I’m stubborn (and I’d already told everyone I was doing it), and then I ran another, and another, and another!! My pre-race ritual always included one beer the day or night before to commemorate how running became my thing, and there was usually a celebratory beer involved after, because, cheers! I’ve been running for more than 25 years now. As I reach a very important birthday this fall, I’ve wanted nothing more than to celebrate by running the #nycmarathon and showing my kids and my friends that you can still run with the big dogs at 50! I’ve navigated two decades of being a military spouse and now a tough divorce by running. I’ve handled teaching for 26 years through running. I’ve made tons of friends through running and found an amazing side-hustle-job that is ALL ABOUT running! And I’m heading into the next chapter stronger and faster than I thought I’d be. I definitely want to run a big marathon for my big birthday, and it feels a bit like kismet that maybe beer could bring me back to where it all started! So #michelobultra, pick me for your team!! It's official, I'm back racing 🏁! I'll be running the @runrocknroll San Diego Marathon on June 2nd. I'm super excited, I have not run a marathon in over a year and a half. First DNF I jumped out of my comfort zone and attempted @runbumraces Quest for the Crest 50k in Burnsville, NC. I have never run a race with some much vert, climbing, nor the technical down hills. I know I should be happy with making 18.5 miles because of the difficulty of the race, and I am happy but not at the same time. Failing at a goal is never fun, but I will treat it as a learning experience as I try to always do. While I learned a lot during this experience , I will work on all of it. The two things that stand out are that I need to work on uphill hiking and paying attention to cut-off times. Thank you, @runbumraces @run2flyforever @wandering.sunflower for the opportunity to try something hard and epic. I plan on returning to conquer the race, hopefully next year. HAPPY MEDAL MONDAY! And what a medal Monday it is! Cleveland 👉 you were amazing. An amazing 26.2 tour throughout the city. The course was stimulating and the city showed up! Spectators lined the streets, sprayed hoses, handed out snacks, beers, cheered and volunteered. It was truly amazing taking on my hometown race to see that everyone showed up! The running community came together and the race was sold out across the board. I am so happy I made it to the start line for this one. I did get a little teary eyed as I started, cause it was different. But I pulled myself together and enjoyed every mile of it. Although hot 🥵, it was so amazing to see the city come together. I had to adjust my goals around mile 15. I’m so happy I was able to adjust and thankful my body made it through 26.2. I swear, one day I’ll have a full marathon and it will be decent weather. Cleveland, thank you! Feels like I just can’t catch a break lately. 😞 The first 8 weeks of training went off without a hitch. Everything was going perfectly. I was making incredible progress and pushing myself harder than I ever have. Them week 9 I got a nasty upper respiratory cold. Took me out for 4/5 runs that week. Week 10 went great, but I was incredibly sore after my 17 mile long run, which made for a fairly miserable week 11 on very tired legs. Then, my week 11, 18 mile long run was going perfect until I ran out of water and my stomach couldn’t handle my gels. Y’all already heard that story. Then this past week, week 12, I got another round of that upper respiratory cold (it was even worse the second go around) which also knocked me out for 4/5 runs. I started feeling a lot better yesterday, but have been out of commission with a migraine all day and now I’m developing a cold sore. It’s so frustrating. I’ve been crushing this training cycle, my legs are responding so well and I’m making major improvements. I’m pushing myself, and being smart with my recovery, fueling, and hydration. But I can’t help getting sick, and that’s the part that’s frustrating. I’m a little paranoid now thinking about what will happen if I get sick again. Just trying to put this behind me and focus on what’s ahead. This upcoming week is a big push week for me, and come Saturday I’ll be knocking off my first of two 20 milers this training cycle. I’ve mentioned it before, but my training plan is blocked into 6, 3 week chunks. This is the start of my final 3 week chunk before I hit the 3 week taper. Absolutely WILD to think about. Mine and Kyle’s schedules are also going to be crazy with lots of travel over the next few weeks, so I’m just focusing on taking care of myself as best as possible throughout it all.
