First session back A beaut of a day. Blue skies, sun & 17°C. Regent’s Park looked gorgeous. Everything in full bloom 🌷, had to duck below quite a few over growing trees in the Outer Circle. After a 32 mile week of easy running, the desire to get back to some faster stuff was replenished. I have been back to the weight room, lifting heavy & have progressed to more than body weight with no issues. So I was keen to if could execute my intervals with no ill effects. On the menu today 10 min @ HM effort 2x7.5min @ HM effort 3x5min @ HM effort With 2 min walk recoveries First speed run in the Asics Metaspeed Paris, not wanting to risk using them so close to London, now is the time to experiment. Have to say initial impressions are very encouraging. Not quite as comfortable as the SC Elite V4 at easy paces but boy are they a fast feeling shoe?! Light & snappy, it was easy to lock into a pace. I did wind up going a little faster than intended, but it felt good & it didn’t feel too hard. Am cooked now though. Let’s see what the day brings for Hackney Half in under two weeks. Incredible experience running through London for 26.2 miles. 3 of 6 major marathons with my bro ✔️! Some highlights: seeing the same Philly marathon pacer at the start of the @londonmarathon , running around Cutty Sark, seen my wife and family at mile 12, tower bridge energy, seen my bro “big” Ben at mile 20 in the sea of 53,000 other runners, running next to two other @childrenwithcanceruk supporters 💪🏻, running past London eye, actual Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the finish line. Loved all the “Well done, mate!” Cheers along the way 🤣. BMO Half Marathon 2024. Well, nothing happened as expected. I planned to run a perfect marathon last Sep: a race that I can perfectly execute my goal pace and finish strong at 3:15. But somehow, the run in January and the missing mileages in March just throw everything away. Even worse, I was so busy in April and then I got sick, so nothing is prepared in shape. I was planning to run so of course I missed all the pacer application.... Anyway, it is what it is. I tried my best in this race. End up, I did better than I expected. I ran in average 4:30 pacing and I ran 4:17 in the last K. It is the first time I successfully finish a race with negative spilt. I believe I set a new personal record in half distance... wow. Since God knows when I’ll be running again, let’s #waybackwednesday to when I could run and this day 4 years ago, when I ran the @wmmajors Virtual Global Marathon, running up/down a windy trail solo, except for @cnaimoli who kindly got up at dumb o’clock and drove for an hour to crew me on a bike for 26.2 miles. Rules were just like official marathon racing, no stopping/pausing, sharing all Garmin/Strava data to verify, etc. to score a time that might get me into the Wanda Age Group World Championships. Ran a PR for back then at 2:56 and that didn’t get me into the Championships. 🤷🏻♂️ Had to wait another year when my @bostonmarathon and @nycmarathon times got me there. 🏃🏻 This was the 4th virtual marathon I did with unofficial PRs during lockdowns and distancing. I am recalling how hard it was to stay engaged and push out there on your own. But @cnaimoli was there for that. And then became my coach. BOSTON, c'était incroyable. La course est historique, légendaire, c'est dur d'y participer, donc ne serait-ce qu'y prendre le départ, c'était un rêve accompli. Bien entendu un public incroyable, dans une ville que j'adore, un passage un peu emotional devant Boston College, et l'arrivée sur cette ligne jaune mythique... que du bonheur. Mais Boston, c'est aussi tout un weekend incroyable où tout ne tourne qu'autour du running! Tu es obligé de faire des choix et le FOMO est intense! ☺️ LONDON, c'était la conclusion. Je pouvais enfin y aller sans m'inquiéter de me blesser, et être un peu moins sur la réserve qu'à Paris et Boston. Finalement j'y fais mon meilleur chrono des 3 semaines, porté par la géniale énergie de mon bro @besmartgetfit. Et on y est enfin : LA 6 STAR ⭐️ @wmmajors Quand tu commences à courir, c'est un peu le graal. Le truc qui semble inaccessible. Et puis là c'est devenu réel. Dans mes mains. Sur ma table. Dans ma douche. Dans mon lit. Elle est là. Pour le meilleur et pour le pire. Et oui on m'enterrera avec. Transformation Tuesday - London Marathon edition! My marathon progress has not been easy over the past 8 years. I really did find the step up from half marathons which I could easily do in 2 hours or just sub 2 hours. It’s taken me a lot of time and training to be able to improve over the 26.2 mile marathon distance. I never thought I’d run a marathon. I used to say, “I’m never going to do a full marathon… but if I did… I’d do New York.” While training for New York, I got an email with an offer to run Boston. After running Boston, I swore I’d never do another. (The marathon makes a liar out of me time and time again. 😂) A stress fracture in my foot and the pandemic meant I wouldn’t for a couple years. Then I ran 4 marathons in three years. This experience was one of the best - and hardest - things I’ve ever worked towards. In London, and in true parental fashion, my parents gave me a card with “Abbott World Marathon Major Six Star Winner” written on the envelope. And you know what? London ’24 The Epilogue Any time you finish a marathon is a cause for celebration and of course London is epic and the 2024 edition did not disappoint. I am extremely privileged to have done 3 London marathons in a row and 10 marathons in a little over 2.5 years. I ran my first marathon at the age of 48, with a weeks’ notice in the middle of a half marathon block and broke 4 hours not having run longer than 15 miles, 3 years before. I then decided I wanted to pursue the six world marathon majors, securing 5 stars in 13 months and each time trying to qualify for Boston but have been falling short. This London block I was in the best shape coming into a race, balancing training & recovery well and was the most chilled coming into a race but yet again the wheels fell off. The issue that I had experienced in the four marathons that I did last year, losing power from my legs, poor speed endurance from 14-15 miles on reared Its head again two weeks ago. So what went wrong? For the rest of us, it just doesn’t come that easily. That’s why I’m overly proud of my achievements so far. Only one major away from my six-star medal. My marathon journey has been plagued by injuries, physical therapy, injections, disappointments, and heartbreaks. In other words, running seems to be tough on me. It’s like falling in love with the wrong person. You know you shouldn’t, but… 🤷🏻♀️ However, I don’t let that cloud my goals; quite the contrary, it motivates me to keep going because my heart tells me so ❤️ So, if everything goes according to plan, next year I will be proudly showcasing that exclusive six-star medal around my neck. 🇬🇧 @londonmarathon , l’après : Le retour de Londres, c’était la semaine dernière. Après une belle aventure, comme après chaque marathon, j’ai un peu de mal à passer à autre chose. Le Sub3 n’est pas passé🤷🏾♂️. La prépa n’était sans doute pas à la hauteur de l’enjeu. Mais je sais que j’y suis allé de toutes mes forces et qu’une progression n’est pas toujours linéaire. 🙏🏽Encore merci à toutes les personnes qui ont célébré cette nouvelle étape avec moi🙏🏽 Je laisse reposer les jambes et la tête quelques jours avant de retourner à mes plans. 🇬🇧LONDON MARATHON RACE RECAP: Miles 21-FINISH 🌟 Welcome to Rainbow Row 🌈 and the energy here is electric. It’s a party! I was supposed to find my friends at Mile 22, and I looked for the LouCity flag and the cheers but I couldn’t find them anywhere. The crowds were 6-7 people deep, so I figured I missed them. This is also where I ended up taking a few walk breaks. I was getting that lightheaded feeling. Was it because I had to adjust my nutrition after losing half my gels? Was it the vertigo? I knew better than to push it…so at the top of each mile, I gave myself a walk to let my head get back to normal…then I would pick it back up. I was almost there. In the final stretch of the London Marathon, you get to catch the landmarks that let you know that you are almost there. The London Eye marks one mile to go. Then Big Ben. On Birdcage Walk there was only 800 meters to go. And this was where I found my friends! They shouted at me and said, “You are literally almost there.” I came around a corner and past Buckingham Palace and I could see the finish on the mall. I pushed myself to get there and threw my arms up in victory as I crossed. I just finished the London Marathon. Coming into the day, I had all these concerns about what I would be able to do, but my body showed up for me for the most part and got me to that finish line. I received my medal and made my way to reunite with my friends. Honestly, I am not even sorry for missing the Boston Marathon this year. London was so much more! Celebrating another mini milestone today 🏃 Since the big move down under it’s taken me a while to get back to where my fitness levels were for the Berlin marathon.
