"When you thought you had your life together, but then therapy happened" Sometimes in life, we think we've got everything sorted out, like we're cruising smoothly on a clear road. But then, bam! Therapy comes along and suddenly it feels like we've hit a detour or even a roadblock. Why does this happen? Think of therapy like a mechanic for your mind and emotions. You might be chugging along just fine on the surface, but underneath, there could be some issues lurking in the engine of your mind, things you might not even realize are causing problems. Therapy is like popping the hood and taking a closer look. It's a safe space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with someone who's trained to help you make sense of it all. Sometimes, what you uncover in therapy can be surprising or even unsettling. It's like finding out there's a whole bunch of stuff going on under the hood of your car that you never knew about. But here's the thing: just because therapy might shake things up doesn't mean it's a bad thing. In fact, it's often the opposite. By shining a light on the things that might be holding you back or causing you distress, therapy can help you make positive changes and get back on the road to feeling better. PLOT TWIST: This actually….isn’t a terrible answer. There’s definitely something to honoring your needs. Need a break? Need space from everyone? Need time to yourself? Need to disconnect from social media/your friends/your family? I think that’s okay. For 2-3 business days? You’re allowed to have that. Where it becomes…potentially dangerous/worrisome is when: •It lasts a long time (maybe a week, or two, or three, or whatever is the length of time that’s long for you) •There’s fear for your safety/suicidl ideation •You find yourself in this headspace more often than not •This is your go-to coping skill (when you could really use the support of others) Otherwise - you’re allowed to cancel plans. You’re allowed to not respond to texts. Did you know boredom can help kids develop skills, creativity + self-esteem? Kids often need help identifying things to do with unstructured time. Easy to apply and don’t require a lot of time. *Research shows that walking and getting outside helps reduce stress. If you don’t like walking, try sitting outside. Whatever you prefer *Journaling and letting out your thoughts in a safe place can give your brain the space it needs to think more clearly and ask “what do I need right now to tend to myself?” *Saying what you appreciate can help shift your thoughts, perspective, and mindset *Set personal limits. No one can do it all. Learning to say "no" is an important skill to apply when managing your stress. *Take a few moments to observe your surroundings. PLOT TWIST: This actually….isn’t a terrible answer. There’s definitely something to honoring your needs. Need a break? Need space from everyone? Need time to yourself? Need to disconnect from social media/your friends/your family? I think that’s okay. For 2-3 business days? You’re allowed to have that. Where it becomes…potentially dangerous/worrisome is when: •It lasts a long time (maybe a week, or two, or three, or whatever is the length of time that’s long for you) •There’s fear for your safety/suicidl ideation •You find yourself in this headspace more often than not •This is your go-to coping skill (when you could really use the support of others) Otherwise - you’re allowed to cancel plans. You’re allowed to not respond to texts.
