Mini beast week started off with releasing one of our butterflies! We will hold on to a couple for another day, as other children, come different days ! The butterfly sat quite content on my hand for ages giving the children time to look at the different colours , textures and look at all the amazing details ! When it eventually flew off we waved it goodbye 🦋 This then sparked a big hunt, quick whip around with some bugs and off we went with our tick lists! [PLAY] When I was drafting this post, I could almost hear 'don't play with your food!' at the back of my mind. What I am asking is not for the kids to play with their food, but to allow them to be involved in the food prep process and knowing a little more about their food. Most of the times we end up dishing out everything for our kids. When they were younger, I sometimes allowed them the autonomy about putting their food together. The mess of course is another story hahaha. But hey, we can keep it simple and start small! Not asking for a full buffet spread! Give this a shot with a little pasta dish! Allow them to scoop their own pasta, choice of pasta toppings. Make a smiley face with their food, talk about where their food comes from, what other toppings you can put in next time. Another beautiful and adventurous day in the forest. We’ve loved watching the seasons change this year during our weekly forest day. Right now the tadpoles are growing legs, the buckeye trees are flowering, the grasses are tall and thick, and the creek is surprisingly full for this time of year in California. I noticed today how much the children gross motor skills have really developed since September. Their balance, coordination, climbing ability, body awareness, and endurance for longer hikes is really evident. We only have 3 more Forest days in this school year, so we are soaking up every wonderful moment.

When my husband suggested we get out of town for a couple of days because he had a rare break from work, I gave it about 10 seconds of thought before agreeing. I packed us all up in under an hour and we hit the road north 🛣️ Maybe you’re thinking, “oh my gosh, I could never do that last minute like that!” But here’s the thing—yes you can. There’s always going to be house care, laundry, work, and routines for you to get back to. We could have stayed home and caught up on projects, saved a little money, and even caught up on some much needed sleep. But… 🪨 We would have missed out on Viv lighting up as she played outside on the rocks next to the “big lake.” 🌊 We wouldn’t have seen the most amazing blue/green color of the water that made it look more like the ocean than a lake. 🏊♀️ Viv wouldn’t have had her first hotel swim experience, which she LOVED. 🍕🍹We wouldn’t have had some of the best pizza ever as we sipped cocktails and talked about sports. Here’s my advice—say yes. Get away for the weekend. Or a week. Or a MONTH. Live a life outside of your routine sometimes. You were not given this life just to work, pay bills, do laundry, clean, and cook dinner. All that work will be there when you get back. You can always make more money. This is something I have to remind myself of a lot, especially coming up to summertime. Living near London means there are loads and loads of family friendly events to go to (and I can be a big sufferer of FOMO 😬) BUT I need to remind myself that my children need plenty of down time where they can engage in unstructured play- play that isn’t organised or directed by an adult. Children’s lives have never been so busy, so this type of play becomes more important. It allows a child to process all the information and learning they are exposed to every day. Thinking back to my childhood, one of my favorite plays was a game called "Ten Ten" or "Suwe" (Hopscotch). With just a piece of chalk and a flat surface, we transformed the ground into a canvas of endless possibilities, hopping and skipping with laughter and delight. In addition to "Ten Ten," another cherished childhood game was "Ayo" (Mancala), a traditional African board game that required strategic thinking and concentration. Gathering around the wooden board, we engaged in friendly competition, honing our problem-solving skills while strengthening bonds with friends and family. These games remind us of the simple joys and lifelong lessons found in play.
