On the OCD journey, sometimes it feels like I'm more afraid of not being able to handle the scary thing...than the actual scary thing happening. Can you relate? 🤷‍♀️ Of course, the content of the obsession always seems relevant (even when it's just the same old OCD). But when I've started to dig a little deeper, I've recognized that it's less about the fear of being a bad person, contaminated, dangerous, etc...and more about my inability to handle the scary thing. I often think, "How could I possibly step forward if that was true?!?!" And yet...this is just another tactic OCD uses to keep us stuck trying to unravel the content. In recognizing this, I've also realized that I can embrace uncertainty about the anticipatory anxiety itself. As a result, I often include, "Whatever happens, I'll trust that I don't have to figure it out now and can handle it then" as a part of both exposure scripts and self-compassion practices. This seems to take back so much power from OCD -- as I take the ultimate leap of faith to trust that my future self can handle whatever comes her way! 🌼 Drop a ⭐ in the comments if you can relate to this. How this creates a problem? 👇🏻 😣People pleasing in the workplace can look like perfectionism and overachieving, but you are doing this in order to be appreciated and liked by others, which then reinforces that you are “good enough.” ❌Will something bad happen if you are not liked? ❌Will you be fired because you could not exceed at the standards or expectations set by your boss? 🧠These fears can lead to excessive worry and anxiety over how you are being perceived and interfere with your productivity as well as ability to be authentically you. 🤯It is important to understand how this shows up, because it may all link back to how you tie your self-worth to your identity and how well you can help others or make them happy. 👀Once this is better understood the REAL work can begin. Let’s work to untie these and learn to separate your worth from how you behave and others react to you. 🩷If you’re ready to understand this cycle and how it shows up for you, and you are a resident of CA, please reach out to me via email or on my website at the link in my bio. #peoplepleaser #peoplepleasing #anxious #anxiousmind #anxiousthoughts #goodenough #anxietyrelief #anxietysupport #anxietycopingskills #rumination #restless #anticipatoryanxiety #selfesteem #selfworth #californiatherapist #cbttherapy #workanxiety #workhard #feelaccomplished

Circa 2003, 18 year old me @drewuniversity @drewcounseling sat in this classroom. At the time I did not know that I was #anxious #scared and certainly not embracing the #unknown the way I am able to today. I recognize that #hindsight is everything, but I reflect and share for #encouragement. Much of the emotions navigated, were #anticipatoryanxiety. The fearful emotions were based off of #whatifthinking and filled with #decisionmaking based off of certainties and uncertainties. The pressure of what will come next and what if nothing worthy comes next can be debilitating. As you sit in an unknown place with a non-guaranteed outcome, embrace the uncertainty and trust yourself, and the process. That trust has the ability to bring you peace and joy of the journey. #inmyopinion #youarewhereyouaresupossedtobe #mentalhealthawareness Be mindful of anticipatory anxiety and what-if thinking.

Had a great day. No mask still 👏🏻 3 weeks and counting 🥰 Went to do pottery - had social anxiety and anticipatory anxiety about this a while now. I was able to go and though I had intrusive/ anxious thoughts about false memory ocd and fear I wasn’t liked, I still had a lot of fun. Then I went to dinner - ate at the restaurant it was good Drive home - barely any harm ocd there just a couple thoughts here and there lately but going a lot better in that area! Used a public bathroom and a bathroom at my parents - didn’t wash my hands before using and didn’t do any compulsions - considered it but didn’t. Stopped by my parents and seen my parents and sister - no mask (my sisters even a nurse in the er so props to me for that one) and they were in and out of their house and so was I with no showering or hand washing. All in all long but good day - still have thoughts and anxieties AND still living and also having fun and pleasure. I’d say that’s the goal of living in recovery 🙌🏻🪩👏🏻🩷 #contaminationocd #anticipatoryanxiety #harmocd #socialanxiety #falsememoryocd #intrusivethoughts #ocdrelief #ocdrecovery

Have you ever experienced the overwhelming urge to share your thoughts and feelings with others, only to hesitate out of fear of judgment? If so, you're not alone. Many of us grapple with the internal conflict of wanting to open up and be vulnerable while also fearing the potential consequences of being misunderstood or rejected. Here are some strategies to help overcome the fear of judgment: 📌Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself and recognize that it's okay to feel vulnerable. Validate your own experiences and acknowledge that your feelings are valid, regardless of how others may perceive them. 📌 Set Boundaries: It's important to set boundaries and protect your emotional well-being. If you encounter judgment or criticism from others, remind yourself that you have the right to assert your boundaries and distance yourself from toxic influences. 📌Challenge Negative Beliefs: Identify and challenge any negative beliefs or assumptions you may hold about yourself or others. Remember that everyone has their own insecurities and struggles, and judgment is often a reflection of the judger's insecurities rather than a true reflection of your worth. Or I get horrible anxiety over them going to school and being exposed to germs and potentially bringing one home. I start to feel random dread because of anticipatory anxiety. I love to sing! I sing, I hum, I dance and I don’t always get the words or steps right AND that’s OKAY! What’s not okay is someone constantly criticizing you for being out of tune, not hitting the notes or getting the words wrong. Turning up the volume or grumbling. I’ve always been a fun person (until *sigh getting entangled with a narc) and in the past, I could care less if I have sung the wrong words. It’s the vibe! And your tribe will laugh along and sing and be just as free spirited as you 🫶🏻 When the narcissist consistently tries to dull your sparkle- trying to recognize it in the moment is difficult. I just laughed at the criticism and brushed it off. Internally I was hurting and struggling with all the years accumulative of him being so critical of me. I was light hearted then and now I call him out on his 💩. And guess what, in turn he acts like I’m the abuser in front of the kids and makes sure at least one of them sees his distress- soccer player move right there!! 3/24/2024, 12:00:40 PM

At the beginning, it can feel like every single thing you do is an exposure. Especially with #agoraphobia at the beginning of my journey. I felt like every little thing I did was a giant exposure that caused a ton of anxiety and a bunch of intrusive thoughts that I had to fight through. No matter what, anytime I left the house it was an exposure, anything I planned it was an exposure, anything I did in my house it was an exposure. I found myself drawn to just sitting there doing nothing because it wasn’t escape from doing exposures. But even then #mentalcompulsions would creep in. As time progressed, and I started to become deeper in #ocdrecovery , it seemed like though these were all exposures, they were also just every day things. Things that people do naturally without thinking about them. My brain started to be rewired. I realized that I was holding onto calling certain things an exposure. When they started to not be ones, and just because I have a little anxiety still doesn’t mean it’s still an exposure. I’m one sense it still is an exposure because I am still in the process of doing #exposuretherapy and it’s hard and triggering AND it’s also not an exposure because it’s either something I enjoy or it’s just some thing that I normally will have to do for the rest of my life. I find myself now in the midst of recovery in this weird mindset of everything still feels somewhat like an exposure AND everything is also feeling like it’s not an exposure and it’s just living. I think this is so important to recognize, because with #OCD it’s easy to slip into having #anticipatoryanxiety that is bigger than the actual exposure. A big part of retraining your brain is too acknowledge that it’s not as big as you think it will be. By labelling everything as an exposure we’re setting ourselves up to feel like it’s huge and scary. By retraining, our brain, slowly to thinking it’s just part of life and or it’s gonna be fun or yeah, it causes me an anxiety but it’s not too big of a deal we prove to ourselves that it’s not as big as a deal. at first it will feel like everything is an exposure and it is, but it’s also just getting back to life and taking back your life

3/20/2024, 2:41:34 PM

March 16th 2024 AKA the longest day ever AKA living life how I used too AKA too many exposures but oh well Part 2 lol OK so once I had my makeup on, I took my dog and headed to my parents. I dropped my dog off at my parents mind you I did do compulsions during this, but that’s OK. I wasn’t trying to eliminate all compulsions in one day. I went into my business room where I do Reiki sessions and I met up with my sister and a photographer that’s an old friend. During the photography sessions, I took my mask off in order to get some really good photos and this is a very huge mother effing thing to do for me. This might be the biggest exposure to date. That is why these are extremely long posts and come in multiple parts. 😂 so I took off my mask 😷 and we got on with the photo shoot. I had my mask off for probably an hour. I did not ask any questions if she was sick or not or anything like I probably typically would if I was compulsing. Once she left, I continue to have my mask off around my sister who by the way is a nurse in the ER and doesn’t wear a mask at work and just got sick a week or two ago. So props to me I had a little snack had a drink then I put my mask back on because I did a Reiki session on her, and I was very very close to her face even though I was close to her face earlier this was going to be a longer period of time, so I just felt more comfortable popping my mask back on. I completed her Reiki session which was a lot of hands-on work, and of course, that can be a trigger for my #contaminationocd and #harmocd .. but I just stay in my element and stayed present and had had a good time. I was extremely proud of all of this, and how I handled my social anxiety. Emotionally. I did not feel that anxious during any of this, to a point where it’s like that’s concerning to me, but it’s not concerning it’s such a great thing! The fact that I did all these exposures, and I didn’t even have my anxiety raise too much is wild to me. The anticipatory anxiety did kick in and I felt very hot before everything happened. I also felt nauseous last night and had a hard time sleeping last night due to #anticipatoryanxiety however … cnt to next post for part 3

3/16/2024, 11:30:16 PM

My anticipatory dread of good events has increased with the general lack of care and masking: an anxiety and certainty that someone will give me or my partner Covid and we won’t be able to go to Australia, or that something else will sweep this trip out from under us. We’re generally safe but there’s a limit to how much our masks protect us if others aren’t wearing them. Part of me won’t be excited for the trip until we’re on the plane.

Oh my gosh, you guys today was a day! It was a huge, intense exposure day, and a big business day, and I am so very exhausted from it all, but so very proud of myself! I went to someone’s house to do services, which I’m not used to going to someone’s house, the services were for 4 women. I had so much anticipatory anxiety about going for weeks, but I just kept saying to myself I’m going! I kept #ruminating over every little thing that could happen. Imagining that I would be judged for wearing a mask, imagining how I might not seem knowledgeable or would mess up, imagining I would feel super anxious and uncomfortable. The anticipatory anxiety was real, AND as soon as I got there, I felt OK. I still had a little bit of anxiety and nervousness/the odd #intrusivethoughts pop in my head, but I just focussed on what I was doing and really got into my zone and element. And honestly I felt pretty calm and comfortable. They were so unbelievably nice! They loved the service and it went better than I could have dreamed. They even want to use me in the future for services, so I am just so happy that it turned out so well. I’m so proud of myself for sticking it out, going and trying to stay in the moment. I could’ve cancelled because of that anticipatory anxiety, it gave me nausea for days. It really built up inside of me but that’s all it was anticipation of imaginary situation bc nothing like that happened! 😂 this is the part of #exposureandresponseprevention that I find so funny and helpful is that you start to realize just how different your thoughts are compared to the events. You start to build evidence, and it becomes almost laughable. What your brain comes up with and you’re just like no literally no. it’s really hard to push through the anxiety but it’s so worth it. #anticipatoryanxiety : 10/10 #ocd anxiety during: 2/10 Pride now: 10/10 #ocdexposure #ocd #sitwithdiscomfort #doitanyways #mentalhealthmatters

With these tips you can prioritise your mental health: - Allow thoughts to come and go: Imagine leaves flowing down a stream, this is how we want to treat our thoughts. Step back and observe them coming and going. - Anchor yourself in the present moment: Notice the world through your 5 senses right now. Ground yourself in the here and now. - Recognise that anxiety is only one part of you: Think "I am the sky, not the weather"- you are the container for your anxiety, but you are not your anxiety. - Do something that is meaningful to you: When we engage in activities that align with our values we are so much more likely to have better mental health. - Acknowledge and allow your anxiety: Notice what is present in your body right now, and even though you might not like it, try to drop your struggle with it. It’s fascinating how the brain is so convincing to get us to avoid things or ruminate on them as a way to give us a sense of control or safety. YET, these signals come from different parts of the brain. Anticipatory anxiety uses more of the Prefrontal Cortex, Anterior Cingulate Cortex, then the Amygdala. Whereas situational anxiety uses the Amygdala, Hippocampus and Insula (perception of body sensations) #AnticipatoryAnxiety #SituationalAnxiety #AnxietyAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #CopingWithAnxiety #AnxietySupport #MindfulnessForAnxiety #AnxietyRelief #UnderstandingAnxiety #AnxietyHelp

Anxiety is a horrible thing, and something non-sufferers struggle to understand. If you know someone with overwhelming anxiety, it helps them if you can understand they would do anything to switch it off, but it's not that easy. Counselling, hard work, and courage can help overcome it. #counselling #counsellornearme #anxiety #pontllanfrith #oakdale #newbridge #someonewhounderstandsanxiety #healthanxietyfears #intrusivethoughtsarejustthoughts #learningtolivewithuncertainty #doomscrollingobsession #feelthefearanddoitanyway #fearofthefear #acceptanceofanxiety #anticipatoryanxiety #facefloatandaccept

👇 Here are a few helpful ways to manage this: 1️⃣ Practice relaxation techniques when you feel yourself getting anxious: Deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and guided visualization are all helpful tools when it comes to calming the nervous system that’s anxious and dysregulated. 2️⃣ Challenge negative thoughts: Anticipatory anxiety often involves negative thoughts about the future. Challenge these thoughts by asking yourself if they are based on fact or if there is any evidence to support them! 3️⃣ Stay present: It’s impossible to worry about the future when you’re grounded mindfully in the present moment! Try mindfulness techniques or engage in activities that require your full attention. If these simple tools aren’t cutting it for you may benefit from working with a mental health professional. ⭐️ Ready to finally get your life back from fear and anxiety? Less than a month to go and we will be moved, but nowhere near settled in! I’ve always liked big moves, they’re exciting, new, different… but I’ve been catching myself agonizing over parts of it. Thinking about all the immediate things I’ll need to do once we’re there, and all the what ifs that seem to follow. New utility connections, which one am I forgetting? Where’s the closest, decent grocery story, am I going to have to order everything online now? What if the kids get sick and I haven’t established their care team yet, what if the therapists are awful? What if everyone hates the house?! Sometimes I think anticipatory stress is worse than actual stress. Actually, it is. The brain dwells on it, manipulating thoughts into these worrisome scenarios that just serve to keep your anxiety heightened. Depending on how bad or chronic it is, you end up feeling the physical impact too. So here’s what I’ve been doing. It’s simple. Just write it down. Once it’s on paper, it’s out of my head, I’m not obsessing over it. I can clearly see what things can be done now, started soon, or absolutely need to wait until we arrive. I’m not giving my thoughts a chance to go…”what if, but then, and what about…” I’m simply just taking care of things. And by taking the action, moving forward with something as simple as a checklist, I feel a sense of comfort and relief because I can see progress. If you find yourself dealing with anticipatory stress often, look for ways you can move it outside of your head. Get it on paper, talk it out, turn it into something you can work on vs fixating and stressing over. #MovingWithKids #organizedlife #anticipatoryanxiety #planningahead #StressFreeMoving #mentalclarityandfocus #PositiveTransitions #lifechanges #nourishnurtureflow

#Repost @dr.avivaromm • • • • • • Pain during labor is one of the greatest anticipatory anxieties for pregnant mamas. And with the media’s scary portrayal of labor, how can we expect otherwise? While medical options, such as epidural, are used for almost 2/3 of births and are incredible resources, they don’t come without risks - like increased length of labor, increased need for operative vaginal delivery, and more. I support all birth choices - I also believe we should all be informed about our options. I know a lot of mamas in this community would love to have the least medicated birth possible, which is why I’m sharing the many non-pharmacologic options for reframing and reducing pain during labor. The point isn’t a “pain-free” labor but to use our bodies, breath, and inner midwife to embrace the sensations that birth our baby, and to have tools and to move through labor when it feels challenging. Here are a few: 🌹Do the work ahead of time of unpacking cultural and personal beliefs about labor & pain 🌹Reframe the concept of pain into curiosity about the sensation that’s getting your baby born 🌹Prepare well with knowledge of labor physiology 🌹Have tools like breathwork/ 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗻𝗼𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 🌹Have support from a woman you trust - this has been found to be one of the most effective ways to reduce fear & pain in labor! 🌹Massage - used ubiquitously by midwives/doulas 🌹Counter pressure by your midwife or partner to decrease pressure and discomfort 🌹Vary your positions - squatting, hands and knees, standing, etc. 🌹Hydrotherapy - a bath, birthing pool, or shower can reduce pain and anxiety 🌹Aromatherapy can reduce the use of opioids during labor, specifically clary sage and chamomile 🌹Herbs - cramp bark, motherwort, and passionflower can support pain relief, muscle relaxation, and ease anxiety. Talk with your midwife about herbal support during your labor and delivery. What tools did you use during labor? The wind is brutal and the cold plunge temp is barely 33 🥶 and honestly, I felt a little anxious about it a few minutes ago. #anticipatoryanxiety is a real thing. It’s when you feel this heightened worry or fear in anticipation of something. But as I read what I just wrote, what am I worried about? Just the cold itself? I’ve already proven that I’m capable. And is there fear involved? Fear isn’t a real tangible thing, it’s just a perspective we have, right? We can shift our mindset and change how we feel and think about things. Here is how I am overcoming anticipatory anxiety over this today …. 1. Ask myself what I’m worried about. 2. Ask myself what fears are involved. 3. Remind myself of what I believe is true. 4. Tell myself out loud who I want to be. In this case it went like this…. I am actually excited about the challenge, I don’t have any worries, and there are no fears except that cold is painful, but cold is my friend and it’s making me stronger and increasing my mental capacity and strength. Plus, I’ve survived things more painful than cold, and this I am choosing! And how fun to do something crazy that not everyone is willing to do. I believe there are whole-self benefits, and I am someone who does hard things, who pushes through anxiety, and who likes the feeling of accomplishment after doing something my old self would never have done. And as I thought that through, I remembered @brenebrown mentioning, in one of her books, that excitement and fear actually produce the same physical response inside our bodies. So heck yeah I’m plunging today, I’m not afraid, I’m excited about it!!! ❄️ 💦 This week, when you feel anxious, don’t immediately run from it, don’t suffocate under it, rise up and face it, interrogate it, pick it apart, and use it to help you dominate it with fierce determination that you WILL win that war in your mind. Each mental battle you win, you grow stronger and more resilient! 💪

Anticipatory anxiety is something I see - and experience - regularly when working in the cancer space. And it makes sense because there is SO much to anticipate - scans, needles, surgeries, treatments (chemotherapy/radiation), results, side effects, difficult conversations, life after cancer… the list goes on and on. 🙃⁣ ⁣ Another factor to consider when trying to sooth this type of anxiety is that, often, people who have experienced a cancer diagnosis have felt unsafe in their body. This can make focusing on breathing - a common anxiety coping tool! - somewhat uncomfortable or scary. 😰⁣ ⁣ But, Cassandra, why the picture of your shoes? 🤔 So glad you asked! This is a picture from a medical oncology appointment a few years ago. It was just a checkup, but simply being in that building was upsetting. It’s a reminder of the cancer experience through all the sights, smells and sounds. It can be difficult to stay calm by focusing internally (by breathing) AND externally (by taking in your surroundings). Enter - magical shoes. ✨ I’ve used clothing on more than one occasion to hold my attention while at the cancer centre. Wearing something that brings to mind good memories or makes me happy helps me distract myself in those very uncomfortable moments and remind myself that it’s just that - a moment… a moment that will pass. ❤️‍🩹⁣ ⁣ #mentalhealth #anticipatoryanxiety #anxiety #anxietysupport #cancer #psychotherapy #psychotherapist #therapy #therapist #hamont

~|!TIME AND TIME AGAIN!|~ As the clock strikes midnight, a new year begins. Yet for me, it’s a time of sorrow. Memories of the past, like ghosts in the night. Haunting, clawing at my heart, casting shadows in my soul. The laughter I once shared with my dearest of friends, now echoes in the past. Bouncing off the walls and up the hallways of emptiness and void. The promise of new beginnings feels so cold now that I wonder in an untold world. The fireworks explode, lighting up the sky, but inside explosions angst and uncertainty are what fills up my cup. For what is the unexpected is what I truly fear. So as the year unfolds, with its ambiguity, I carry the weight of my sorrows as it goes. Yet I will not be possessed by the burdens of yesterday or the unpredictability of tomorrow. Doomsday won’t strike midnight on me yet By Melchior Hinriksson ________________________________________________ #newyear #brokenpoetry #poetrycommunity #poems #sad #losttime #javilobe #sadpoetry #burdens #anticipatoryanxiety #fearofthefuture
