Can Piriformis Syndrome cause Sciatica?⚡️ 🍑The piriformis is a buttock muscle that has a few functions, while the hip is flexed it internally rotates and abducts the thigh, and while the hip is extended it externally rotates the hip joint. It also aids in both lateral pelvic tilt and posterior pelvic tilting. The piriformis can cause sciatica due to the anatomical orientation of both structures. The sciatic nerve (which runs down from the buttock to back of the thigh) generally runs just underneath the piriformis muscle (but sometimes the nerve can run through or above the piriformis muscle). When ‘tight’ the piriformis can compress the sciatic nerve leading to sciatica symptoms ✅It is important to remember that this condition is considered an uncommon cause of sciatica (and tends to be overly diagnosed). So if you’re unsure if this is what you’re experiencing, consult and orthopaedic physiotherapist or chiropractor for a proper assessment and diagnosis! That said, once the diagnosis is confirmed, an active approach to recovery can be taken. A mix of soft tissue mobilization, stretches, nerve flossing, and strengthening exercises can be taken to get to full recover. Stop staying in chapters you have outgrown Some of you may know that as a sprinter I’ve spent the last few years rebuilding my engine after serious illness. My top speed back then was 22 to 23 mph. The previous phase of my training was based around treadmill intervals with a top speed of 14 mph and this isn’t as bad as it sounds because 14 mph is a 16 second 100-metre sprint. Quite good when you want to control the variables of speed, distance and time for interval work and recovery via heart rate However, there comes a time when you have to move on from a chapter that you have outgrown. I realised this last night when a phrase landed in my brain - you will never adapt to what you have never experienced - in competition I recently hit 21 mph so treadmill intervals of 14 mph are largely a waste of time for me now and they have been replaced by field sprints with the initial phase of 16 to 18 mph and slowly increase into 90% intervals as this will improve almost every aspect of my sprinting As much fun as the treadmill was during rehabilitation, it is time to move on and I had to step into the next chapter in order to leave the current one.
