🌱💀 Everything got eaten Mate 💀🌱 •• I lost all the broad beans I sowed in December, then lost the broad beans I sowed in Jan and Feb. I planted strong plants in the ground and they got eaten. Thought it was pigeons, so covered them but the slugs and snails ate them 🦜🐌 •• Then I sowed lettuces, and the slugs and snails ate them. Then they ate the sorrel, and the basil and spinach, and the parsley. They ate them all 🐌🐌 •• But it’s okay. I have tomatoes and chillies, and melons and kale and cucumbers and okra growing at home. When they are bigger, I will take them to the allotment for the slugs and snails to eat 🐌🌱 •• But I did harvest some purple sprouting broccoli, and some rhubarb and peas for me to eat. We put in the new irrigation for our vegetable beds this evening. We're in the midst of a heatwave so we had to time it between the time it was cool enough to work and when the mosquitoes come out ... just happens to be when the water came on 😱🤦♀️😂😂 Not wanting to waste water we held the pipes over the beds (& watering can with my foot!!) until the irrigation turned off again. All done now though. My Cafe au Lait dahlias have been a total flop this season...literally! For the first time, I picked out the centres as advised by growers & instead of growing tall & straight as they usually do they’ve grown out sideways & their long heavy stems have flopped all over the garden, many have even snapped off at the base with the weight of recent rain. I’ve had to cut most of the stems off, salvaging as many flowers & buds as I could. Not sure if I’ll get any more flowers now this season🥹The poor roses they grew over are pretty munted too. I’ve just noticed that I have posted hardly anything this year…… as a rule I like to fill up my ‘gram’ with flowers and plants, but this year my #garden has been an unmitigated disaster…… ☹️the weather, mainly the scorching heat has been the main issue, all my roses frazzled in the first heat wave and just as they recover and go into bloom again, the second heatwave arrives and boom, everything that looks beautiful for. Fleeting moment is burnt to a crisp by the end of the day. The second big issue has been owning a new build garden. I was initially excited by the blank canvas, but I’m working with clay and rubble and hardly anything else, so it’s back to drawing board and a lot of digging and mulching again once I can actually get into the earth, as it’s solid rock at the moment! Thirdly slugs! There are, and I lie not, 100’s in my garden and they have decimated everything. And finally, a stray pumpkin seed t from the chickens took root and ‘let’s leave it and see what happens’ has now taken over the entire garden….around 15ft in any direction, it’s that big the dogs go under it. At last we have dahlia action! I thought I’d lost this one, Labyrinth. Please don’t follow my terrible role model of dumping your dahlia tubers in the shed upside down, meaning to go back the following day to label, but instead leaving them to shrivel away over winter. Those that didn’t desiccate or turn to slime were unlabelled so I had no idea which had survived until they flowered. Def slugs and snails are creating my gardening disasters. While I do my best to tolerate pests in the garden, and fight them with natural predators, the amount of snails attacking our cucumbers and pumpkins is insane! When you think you've got this 'grow your own' thing sussed and net the strawberries early to stop the birds having a feast and a caterpillar attacks your blueberry bush under the net because the birds can't get to the caterpillars because of the net 🤦🏼♀️😭 Now that's a bad day 😅🤔 . Carefully removed the caterpillars 🐛🐛🧤 Now to try a vinegar and water solution spray as a deterrent 🤔 Replace all the straw and re- net 💫 . On a positive note the strawberries are in abundance 🍓 and the garlic is keeping the snails and slugs away 🐌 . Also have a self water system pipe going straight into the raised bed ready for any potential summer rain ☔💦 . few months ago I had this not-so-bright idea of mixing pigeon grit into my hoya potting soil. so my mix had equal parts grit and coco peat, then a little bit of pumice and coco cubes. UNFORTUNATELY I didn't know that the pigeon grit I bought had some sort of clay in it. Only when my hoyas in the new mix started dropping yellow leaves that I began to inspect the pot and the medium was holding too much water and wasn't as airy as expected 😩 maybe the grit I bought was of poor quality.. or, I was tricked by the merchant. anyway my plants are back in coco peat-coco cubes-pumice mix. 4/24- Being my Sunday, I was able to spend a bit of extra time in the garden. I started out by finishing filling all the terra-cotta pots with strawberries, and was excited to finally start digging a spot along the fence to move the sad rhododendron from the front yard. But even from the first real stab of my shovel, I hit cement. “What the heck?” I thought, as my heart sank. Not more huge, impossible to get rid of, cement things six inches under the soil, stopping me from planting anything that needs roots! (Like at my last house) I dug around, searching for the edges, and quickly discovered that it is some kind of giant cement pipe, with a hole in it. . . So I’m going to be contacting “Call before you dig” before I go any further. . . So, so much for moving the rhoddy today. Instead, I wandered to the front yard and did some weeding and spread some compost on the bed out there. Then worked on breaking down some yard debris into the finally empty bin, before deciding it was time to go inside and get to things like grocery shopping. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, though. Felt like the first day this year off truly, actually gardening in the sunshine! 7 years ago I planted a Pecan tree and last year it finally was big enough to produce these 2 nuts. Tonight the wind split the tree in half. It's a total loss and completely not salvageable. This photo features what are quite possibly the most expensive nuts in Melbourne. 🌱
Something I didn’t do for my birthday that I always do… go to the plant place and buy a new plant. I just didn’t have the heart for it when I lost about 80 percent of the outside plants and about 20 percent of the greenhouse plants last week in the polar vortex freeze 🥶… so I have to get my sad little plantswoman heart 💔 back into the game before February, when the seedlings need planting. I chose my little house in Annandale, Virginia over 30 years ago because I loved the big oak trees and the shade. But as my passion for gardening grew (no pun intended), I needed to find a large sunny plot to grow all my favorite flowers, including all sorts of zinnias and dahlias. Four years ago I was able to finagle a large garden plot on a horse farm…that happened to be 50 miles away. Week after week I have made the journey to toil in that sunny plot and harvest my little beauties for my upcoming weddings. It was truly a magical and spiritual place full of hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. This year the owner of the farm bought a cute family of goats. To my great dismay, someone decided the goats needed a delicious flower snack and let the goats into the fenced flower plot. Every zinnia was eaten and trampled and there was nothing left of the dahlias but mangled stalks. Months of staking, weeding and pruning and above all, patience, and there was nothing left. Hot one today but cooler than those in July. And, I checked this morning and counted three times—and another promising tomato was missing. Part of the plant was bent over with an attached tomato on the ground. No discards, so I guess the critter hadn’t yet eaten both watermelon vines, leaves off a climbing rose, or one of my Hellebore plants I’d planted in the spring. Plus the leaves off a hydrangea trying to heal. Not nice. After tying up more growing dahlias, I had to go shopping—not for more plants. Had to take a break from garden disasters. 😜 I think I need to go back to piping flowers on cupcakes. That and guarding the garden at night and sleeping during the day. I put the wavy fairy solar lights out to charge in strategic places hoping those will spook him tonight. And I’m going to start covering the plant at night so the rest of my tomatoes won’t disappear. Or buy more wire cages. Which could get ugly (visually) real quick. Plus, they’re expensive. 😱 On a good note, I found a squash plant growing in a pot on my back porch. I thought all of the seeds I’d put in that pot had been duds. Wonders never cease. And all of this drama is going down in my August journal. Maybe one day my descendants will read and have a good laugh: “Poor Lovie. Great-granny had such a hard time trying to grow a tomato. And a squash. And an okra pod once every couple of days. Picking flowers during golden hour will help you forget about the time you crawled on your hands and knees in the jalapeños to harvest them and ended up on ice & Benadryl. 🫣 All I remember was giggling as I was crawling in the jalapeño plants and thinking… if people only knew what it took to harvest some days! 😵💫 A couple hours later my neck is swelling and it’s not stopping!! Thanks to Jesse being home and quick on his feet and being persistent that I take 2 Benadryl & get on ice immediately {I am not a great patient} we got it under control and 24 hours later I was better. No idea what happened… did I get bit? did I get burned? Disaster - Leek Rust 😭 My entire crop of galic (7 varieties!), most of my onions and all the shallots have had to be pulled up. Leek rust has struck on my plot big time and opposite me Chris has had to rip his garlic out too. I can see it's taken hold on other plots as well. Leek rust is a fungus affecting alliums (onion family) which stunts the growth of the root bulb. After a lot of research it seems it is completely incurable. I have managed to save a few of the better garlic bulbs, the larger (oddly straight) onions and the last of the leeks. So it's not a complete loss, but not far off. My chives have survived and one block of onions - so far. The cause appears weather related to an extent. Compounded by having too many plants too close together. Possibly over watered trying to compensate for a very dry start to the year. While I can still eat the salvaged crops I won't be able to plant alliums of any kind in these beds for a couple of years unless I replace the compost. I can't compost the waste either as it will potentially perpetuate the problem down the line. So that's another trip to the tip. All in all 🤦♂️ However, on the plus side I now have space to plant other things. Some extra spuds have gone in 2 of the beds. Carrots and parsnips sewn too. I'll have something in all of them as quickly as possible. Brassicas maybe. I've squeezed replacement onion sets into some other beds too. I just need to find some more shallots and a space for them. Remember the hopeful joy of these beauties a couple of months ago? Our tomatoes turning our porch in to a jungle. These were all heirloom, special tomatoes that we were testing... Past tense because gardener and gardeners wife accidentally murdered them all. However great at gardening and growing food they are, all the knowledge that gardener has, they still managed a small, silly mis comunication...that cost us half of our fancy tomatoes. Box hedge caterpillar has destroyed all four of the box hedge topiary balls round the Japanese garden this week 🐛😭 Three years of nurturing gone in a flash ⚡🥺 . Anyway the remains are all in the bin now ~ I can't spray them with anything as they are next to the Koi pond 🤔 and the thought of those wriggly things wriggling around makes me feel all itchy 😯 Imagine if they got in my washing 🥺 . Earlier in the week I noticed they looked a bit 'odd' 🤔 Not so green, almost a bit burnt looking and a funny shape 🤔 Then the next day they was almost gone 😕🤷🏻♀️ That quick 😯 I never knew such a thing existed 🤷🏻♀️ Never saw the moth 😯 . On a positive note, I look forward to finding something as a replacement 😊 🌾 . Blight...2nd year of properly gardening. 1st year of getting blight. What an absolute butt ache. The lovely @plantiverse_uk came over and helped me get rid of the majority of my tomato plants, I didn't have the heart to by myself!!! It's been an educational year for me, and quite heartbreaking to have to throw away the majority of my marmandes and black tomato plants. Biggest lesson this year. Disaster in the garden!! The left photo shows my tomatoes were ripening nicely and I had just started picking them. The right photos show that my outdoor tomatoes have been attacked by blight. I'm not surprised, we have had a very wet summer and although they are blight resistant varieties, I don't think anything would have been resistant to the rain we've had. I will take out those that definitely have it and try to ripen the tomatoes that still look ok indoors. Some plants have not succumbed yet, I will leave those, but as they are in the same pots I don't hold out much hope. Root rot... 😳what a deceptive little disease! 🤯🤯🤯The leaves look droopy as if the plant is thirsty, you keep watering, the leaves get more droopy, you water more... till you realize that something may be wrong😱😱😱 (probably a tad too late which bursts your genius bubble). . Got a Vinca/ Periwinkle to get some color while my balcony fills up and the poor thing was a classic case of root rot 😓and me, a rookie, could not see the disease spreading through one plant to the next.😓😓😓 Finally rescued rest of the plant and now rooting in water. . For all the newbies out there🧐, root rot is a fungal disease which makes the plant unable to absorb moisture from the soil. If you are watering right but still your plant look droopy, it might be due to root rot. If you remove the plant from the pot, you will see the roots are no longer white but brown.👎 . Can you rescue? Apparently you can😲. One way is to cut off ✂️the healthy stems and root them in soil or water (this might be the laziest way as well). Another way is to carefully remove the plant from the pot/ soil and wash off all the soil 💦, remove all the dead roots and try planting in fresh soil or potting mix. my strawberry patch has a disease. my biggest disappointment gardening so far. i might even have to start over. everything looked good from the outside- but the roots are bad. Every strawberry started to have the same spots on them- and i just knew something wasn’t right. life’s like that sometimes. Having to start over or weed things out that are producing bad fruit in life isn’t fun. and im not going to lie- i was panicking over my strawberries. because I’m not sure i can fix it. i had to tear a lot of plants out. but as days have gone by, i got to thinking that now i know how to handle a situation like this in the future and possibly prevent it. and that facing obstacles and overcoming them is something to be proud of. we’ve gotta weed out the bad roots in our lives so we can bear the good fruit that God has called us too. God has been with me since I walked across 10th street and walked into west tenth street Baptist church at 10-11 years old. It’s hard to explain but I have felt Gods presence and seen Him guide my path for a long time. I’ve had successes, failures, heartbreak, mistakes, and everything in-between. God has always lifted me back up and walked me through cleaning up the rottenness so I can bear His fruit in my life. I’m not sure what the future holds for my strawberry plants or my life but i know Who does and that’s good enough for me. He is always faithful. Never wavering. Same God as the Old Testament and will be the same God at the very end. That gives me unexplainable peace and hope.
This patch can only be described as a small disaster 🥳it was meant to be rows of nigella and scabious but the weeds took over and I think I managed to weed out all the scabious seedlings and carefully look after what appear to be weeds. Time to start again perhaps but I’m tempted to leave it and see whether any of the original seeds actually manage to flower in their jungle bed.🤷♀️ #gardeningdisasters
It wasn't a good gardening day yesterday. I didn't post this at the time because I was too upset and hoped to cheer myself up by visiting some NGS gardens. That didn't turn out well. Anyway - little greenhouse was a casualty of Friday's wind. I lost half my chilli seeds, most of the tomatoes, erigeron and Mexican Daisies. I managed to save enough basil, coriander and hollyhocks and thankfully transplanted other flower seedlings last week and they're securely on a sheltered bench. 🙄 #windy #winddamage #windcasualty #gardeningdisasters #seedlings #gardening

Oh bugger my gorgeous Clematis Majorie had only gone and died of Clematis Slime Flux of all things 😢😢 I noticed she had an oozy stem a few months ago and she hasn’t produced any fresh growth at all this year despite the stems still being green. I’m heartbroken she was an absolute beauty and also perfectly screened the view of my neighbours messy building site of a garden 😫. That’s gardening for you always throwing us a curve ball but it has spurned me on to treat myself to a Arbour seat which is going to be the perfect screen to the Jewsons builders yard I’ve looked on now for several years. Anyone else had a catastrophic garden failure this year 🙋🏻♀️ I don’t think the weather report for my house is very accurate. We had left the tomatoes and squash outside a few other times when it wasn’t supposed to freeze, so when the weather said 36-38 I didn’t think much of it. Well, my mom texted me and gave me the sad news, that the tomato’s and squash were done for. I thought she was kidding, and that maybe they could be saved, but she was right and they aren’t coming back. So that was pretty depressing. My mom spent some time weather proofing some of the other stuff in nice little tents so hopefully nothing else dies.
