Ollie & I had some time to kill Saturday while the girls were in ballet. So we checked out this adorable community garden 🌿🌸🥒🍅 unfortunately after walking around for a very short amount of time….we felt very unwelcome 😔 a lady came and was watching us walk around, asking us if we even had a plot in there garden. She was with a man that kept watching us from the sidewalk. It was disheartening that even though it was called a community place and we were treating everything with respect, we were still pushed out. @fairmountcommunitygarden I’m sure is full of lovely gardeners, but the vibe these 2 have were not friendly or good representation of what a community garden represents. Venus fly trap getting ready to bloom! So excited to finally have some plants growing at home again! Peppers galore, datura, henbane, belladonna, Venus fly trap, orchids, mandrake, wormwood, mugwort, dragon fruit, cacti and more!!! Some of them came to me already as plants but many of the were started from seed. It’s been a great learning experience figuring out what works and what doesn’t after moving across the country and switching to indoor vs outdoor growing. I’ll be teaching a workshop for the HorrOCCULTure conference in a few weeks hosted by Devin Hunter of modernwitch.com The workshop is called “Black Thumbs and Problematic Plants” and teaches how to approach the oftentimes shit show of growing an indoor poison garden with humor. I’ll be sharing my personal experience and what has worked for me as well as tips for avoiding catastrophe. We will be looking at individual plants from mandrake to aconite and all the well-loved nightshades of the witch’s garden. Every day I’m featuring a new plant I’m growing in my garden this year. Today’s featured herb is catnip! Catnip is a most beloved plant by our feline friends and humans alike. Mostly known for its psychoactive effects when eaten by cats, catnip can also be used by humans as a tea or smoke. Catnip is also featured often in some witchcraft recipes. Catnip is easy to grow and once started it will grow prolifically. All around a wonderful and intriguing herb to keep in the garden, especially if you keep cats. Personally I’m growing this herb for my cats, they absolutely love the stuff and I’m happy I can supply their needs. Borage!!!! What a companion!! These beautiful little blue stars bless the garden in so many ways!! They attract pollinators, they deter pests, they add minerals to the soil aiding nutrient content to spinach and improve flavor in strawberries and tomatoes!! Not to mention they are delicious and magickal themselves!!! They taste like cucumber and are beautiful additions to salads and desserts. Borage oil helps with eczema and has cooling qualities. Borage self seeds and spreads!!! Which I’m always excited about), do well in less than fabulous soil, and are great in full sun or partial shade. They come in blues and white (white flowers always have a stronger fragrance… better attract pollinators) and are an incredible addition to any garden!! You up for an experiment?? Starting today I’m going to make a post everyday introducing a new herb I’m going to have in my garden this year. Presented in this post is Solomon’s Seal! These seeds have to experience a period of cold before they will germinate, so the next step is to throw them in a glass of water in the fridge for two weeks. Solomon’s Seal gets its name from the star that appears in the stem when the stalk and roots are cut and severed. Solomon’s Seal is primarily grown for the root’s magical and medicinal properties, but the stalks can be harvested and eaten as a meal like asparagus. The songbird population has reduced by 30% due to lack of food. Remember to leave these leaves on the ground so that the tiny eggs on them will hatch in the spring. My delphiniums are blooming. Traditionally these gorgeous flowers are used in protection, health and water magick. But they can also be used for opening ourselves up to new adventures and beginnings which makes them a great plant ally to use with THE FOOL. When the moon is new take a delphinium (a printed image or drawn picture works just as well if you don’t have access to the plant itself), The Fool card and place both on your altar. Ground and centre and imagine yourself going forward into the next moon cycle with optimism and joy. No need to get too hung up on plans or whys or how’s just let yourself be open to whatever comes through. The roses in my garden are abundant so I’m going to harvest, with permission of course, some petals to make some simple Self Love Bath Salts. Pink ones are the best for this but you can always use whatever is on hand. Take a handful of dried rose petals. If you’re harvesting fresh let your petals dry on your altar with the Queen of Cups. Add your petals to a mix of 3 parts epsom salts to one part pink Himalayan salt. Add some rose essential oil. Mix in your energy and intent. If you’re making your blend in the southern hemisphere stir anti clockwise, go the opposite way if you’re in the northern hemisphere. Make your salts on a Friday when the moon is waxing and one made leave them on your altar, with some rose quartz and the Queen of Cups to charge. Yesterday, I brought all the dahlia pot tubers in from the garage, trimmed the stems off, and repacked them into two boxes to overwinter. These were all cuttings I had taken in the spring that I rooted and grew outside this summer and fall in pots in the ground. I am leaving the tubers in the soil as tiny clumps to store, fingers crossed they do ok! You can see some tubers even broke through the pots.
