Merry Mabon and Blessed Equinox. The first day of autumn is finally here. Today, the night & day are equal. After today, the nights will slowly become longer as we head towards Samhain and winter. Mabon is the second of three harvest celebrations. It is also viewed as the pagan Thanksgiving. It's a time to release, give thanks, and find balance in life again. We're celebrating by making a besom/broom, making a simmer pot, and a nice dinner in celebration. Some also believe this is the time in which Persephone returns to Hades in the Underworld and as a daughter of Persephone I celebrate her returning to her second home where she's treated as an equal and loved for her darkness as well delicate side. PERSEPHONE RETURNS “I, eternal child and underworld queen, return. Again” No one comes back from their own underworld unmarked. But what is a descent? And equally, what is a return? As Nietzsche said, ‘The tree that would grow to heaven must send its roots to hell’. Is that a wilful decision? No it isn’t. Like Hades’ abduction of innocent Kore from her mother Demetra, the descent is not consciously willed into existence. Often tragic and traumatic events bring us there - to meet our Hades. But the wish of death is the ultimate scream of life. I died to all illusions of certainties, to all I thought I was, I knew. I died to control, to measure, to protection. I died to masks. I died to fears and expectations. And I grief their death because these defence mechanisms did - indeed - keep me alive. But you see, it comes a time where our LIFE, our Daimon, our Sprit needs to shatter all of them, as they have in fact become the true barriers for our LIFE to express itself. To melt into true surrender requires a strong container, strong enough to choose to give oneself over to the unknown. It’s the feminine in us that can contemplate dissolution. Ugly and glorious. Excruciating and liberating. Terrifying and exciting. Beauty and Horror. Lonely and held. Falling and Flying. Tears come down as I write, as I recall. So we die. And eventually we return. Scary, so scary to feel vulnerability and transparently exposed. Scary, so scary to be irresistibly bound to an infinite potential that overwhelms us. That - from now on wants to guide. And that’s why we bring Spring 🌼 with us But you see… don’t be blinded by illusion. The ever-unfolding process that is life… that spiral. We keep turning around a central point. We’ll come back to the same issue, the same wound, the same image, the same book, the same poem and we’ll experience something new. Today I'm sharing a few of the ways I aim to create candles sustainably. This is certainly a process and I'm continually trying to develop new ways of making Woodland Magic more eco-friendly:) Woodland Magic uses 100% soy wax (🍯 organic beeswax for select ornamentations) sourced in the US, along with compostable paper, biodegradable cornstarch peanuts, & honeycomb wrap to ship candles safely. I also seek to reduce packaging waste by reusing cardboard & other bulk shipment goods for candle shipping.📦 In the last year, Woodland Magic has also expanded its local market participation, increasing the amount of goods sold locally. All of my candles are now made in a workshop powered by the sun:)☀️ Lastly, many of my containers are designed for reuse as drinking vessels or storage jars--burn a candle now, but use the jar forever (or a long time, at least:)🦉 Featured here: Persephone's Return in light green🕯📜🌿

Although I don’t personally wear a lot of scents, ever since I read the novel Perfume back in the 80s I’ve been fascinated with the distillation of essences and how they layer together. As an early birthday gift Michael purchased for me a perfume making class based around citrus scents 🍊. It was fascinating and challenging and fun! Through the last Dark Moon of Winter and into the New Lunar Light we have travelled as the last weeks/days of the colder darker months give way to the emergent unfurling of Spring here in the Southern Hemisphere. Persephone Returns: Emergence From The Underworld {Wheel of the Year Workshop} Imbolc is the time when the year itself struggles to be born. We could use a little help from healing deities like Brigid, and survivors who've come before like Persephone, Demeter, Lilith, and Inanna – ones who've survived great sorrow and liberated themselves from oppressive darkness and stagnation. ✨ Happy Fall 🍂 Equinox. So much shifting this week. My life once moved too fast to notice the passing of the seasons. The arrival of autumn often tinged with sadness— looking up, I’d notice the leaves had turned, and mourn a summer passed too quickly. The seasons slipping through my fingers like sand. Time 🕰 escaping, an endless chase. And so on, and so on, and so on. I discovered that ritual is a way to tune into the small shifts in nature; to notice how the cycles of Mother Earth 🌎 are reflected in me, her daughter. In a funny way, this slows down time. So many of our ancestral rituals have been commercialized. We recognize the season is changing because of the latte flavors at the coffee shop, or the color of the plastic stuff on sale at the store. Our rites of passage turned into candy flavors, devoid of value and meaning. There is so much to give thanks for on this day, when light and dark hang in the balance. How did our ancestors celebrate? Was it the harvest festival of Mabon? Did they honor Persephone, descending to the underworld for her 6-month stay? Or gather at a temple, and marvel at the same mysteries that confound us? Get still today and cast back to these memories; they exist within you. Remember that you are part of the endless spiral 🌀of nature; not separate, but made from this earth. Her beginnings and endings are our own; we share this energy with all beings. ✨
