Simple gardening is the way to go. This is the second year of the edible flower bed. These are all self-seeded. I planted the seeds last spring. We enjoyed flowers and greens all summer. The bees were happy too. In the winter, covered the bed with hoops/farming plastic and we were able to eat fresh arugula in the middle of the winter. This gorgeous tiny flower is arugula. Arugula is easy to grow. It can grow in a container if your space is limited. Freshly picked arugula tastes so different than store bought. And these gorgeous tiny flowers are going to show up in the loom. 💟🧶🌿 • #gardenaslivingsculpture #sustainableartpractice #environmentalsteward #earthdayiseveryday #seeds #edibleflowers #arugula #movement #gardeningforcreativity #gardeningforhealth #gardeningforsustainability #seasons #spring #handmade #weaving #seedlibrary #rigidheddleloom #telar #tejido #flowers #pollinators

You know how you always see giveaways running on the old "soshul meedyas" but never enter because you figure hell would freeze over before you ever won? Well, get your Big Coat on Beezlebub, because I only went and won one. Oh yes I did. I honestly entered on a whim so I was totally blown away to win it, and it's such a great prize I can't wait to get it set up. As it will probably be a few weeks before we get it properly up and running, I wanted to share some pics in the meantime and say a big thank you to @plot36b_59a for running the giveaway and a shoutout to @megapotuk for supplying the ace prize. . What I received is a full 4 x 16L pot gravity fed automatic watering grow kit, which includes four trays, accessory kits, covers, pipe, connectors, timer and felt pots (full instructions for set up are on Mega Pots Youtube channel) It's going to be a fantasticaddition to the plot greenhouse, and it will be interesting to see what difference it will make - I'll be using it for tomatoes and cucumber. I will share more once we get them set up, but in the meantime, check out the Megapots page and website, and I totally recommend plot36b's account if you don't follow him already. 👍🏻 . . #plot_twenty_four #winner #megapots #automaticwatering #hydroponics #gravityfed #growsmarternotharder #conservewater #gyo #instagarden #allotmentuk #growuk #eatwhatyougrow #allotmentgardening #veggiepatch #harvest #selfsufficient #sustainability #growfood #plot #gardeningforfood #reducefoodwaste #lessfoodmiles #gardeningforsustainability #organicfood #greenfingers #homegrownfood #plotlife

Removed a few trees here to replace them with a new deciduous Gleditsia Sunburst tree this morning. We buried our old Rooster who recently passed, underneath. His body will feed the tree and the tree now will forever be known as Frank. This area is now going to recieve a lot more sunshine during winter, and be shaded from the deciduous trees we've planted here in summer. Crab Apple, Cotinus, Crepe Myrtle and Gleditsia Sunburst. My @forest.road is getting swamped with garden content so I may revive this one to give me more space to share gardening content. It's one of my loves. #gardening #crepemyrtle #crabapple #smallholding #smallbatch #ruralliving #permaculture #gardeningforsustainability

It's happening! They're here!! Shops in our village have been out of stock of tomatoes regularly recently & it's been killing me! These little guys are gonna be gone fast! No chance of a "glut of tomatoes" going on in this garden that's for sure 😁 @inthegardenwitheliandkate - I completely lost track of which tomato varieties were which after buying your recommendations - but either way, I'm on the way to a more successful crop this year than I've had in the past, so thanks! 😊 #tomatoaddict #homegrowntomatoes #homegrownfood #growyourowntomatoes #growyourownfood #scottishtomatoes #scottishgardeners #selfprovisioning #sustainablefood #sustainableliving #ukgardeners #amateurgardener #seasonalfood #gardenvictory #stirling #stirlingfood #gardeningforsustainability #gardeningforfood #foodgarden #ediblegarden #kitchengarden

Had to pull up some stray onions early to make way for the tomato plants (they'd been planted last year and only just got round to growing!) - so I used the tops to make tasty mexican-style eggs with a bit of chilli flake through 😋 The rest is getting grilled tonight to go with salmon fillet & cherry tomatoes! 🍅 #selfprovisioning #leftovers #oniontops #growyourown #growyourownfood #growyourownveg #growyourownveggies #homegrownonions #homegrown #kitchengarden #scottishgarden #scottishgardeners #scottishgardening #gardenharvest #veggiebeds #ediblegarden #gardeningforsustainability #foodmiles #foodmilesmatter #foodgarden #ukgardens #ukgardener #ukgardening #stirling #stirlingfood

I spent Sunday planting up all my pots with wildlife-friendly bedding plants, so I was thrilled to see a hoverfly on this bidens sun drop ☀️ I always assumed bedding plants were great for pollinators because they’re so colourful, but apparently most of them have almost no value for wildlife. Busy Lizzies, begonias, petunias etc are often double varieties which means they have more petals than pollen-producing anthers. I’ve tried to choose a range of flower shapes and sizes to suit as many pollinators as possible, mainly focusing on single open flowers for butterflies, hoverflies and bees. I’ve also picked lots of yellow and white flowers for moths. At the end of the summer everything will go in the compost bin so nothing goes to waste! #gardening #gardeningforwildlife #gardeningforsustainability #hoverfly #ukwildlife #savethebees #pollinators

Garden plants a-z: B is for bluebells & bamboo 🥰 I've planted these shade tolerant bulbs between our clumping bamboo and some have taken better than others. This year I also added an edible perennial next to each of them, including Sorrel and garlic cress shown here - plus hosta, wild garlic, red Sorrel and wild rocket. Hopefully I'll have more to share on these later in the year 🤞 #bluebells #englishbluebells #hyacinthoides #hyacinthoidesnonscripta #shadelovingplants #bamboo #gardenplants #gardenplanning #companionplanting #woodlandflowers #springbulbs #gardeningforbiodiversity #gardeningforsustainability #nativeflowers #britishflowers #gardeningcommunity #gardeningforpollinators #ukgardens #scottishgardens #amateurgardener #scottishgardeners #ukgardeners #perennialflowers #perennialgarden #perennialgardening #forestgardening #stirling #pollinatorgarden #springgardens

Realising we now have ~150 different plant species in our garden, I thought I'd begin a wee a-z of what's there - starting with this beautiful "Katy" apple tree my parents bought me for my birthday. She's still really young, but produces lots of perfectly formed, super sweet, juicy apples, with very little input from me! The blossom is gorgeous and the birds have been doing a good job so far of keeping her pest-free. Of everything in my garden, this tree is definitely in my top 10 faves & I look forward to watching her mature over the years 🥰 #appletrees #katyapples #gardentrees #fruittrees #selfprovisioning #growyourownapples #growyourownfruit #growyourownfood #homegrownapples #homegrownfood #appletree #appleblossom #blossomwatch #gardeningforbiodiversity #gardeningforsustainability #climategarden #climatechangegarden #foodmiles #gardeningforbirds #biodiversegarden #regenerativegardening #gardentrees #treesareawesome #scottishgardeners #ukgardeners #amateurgardener #scottishgardens #ukgardens #hardyedibles

Dandelions - friend or foe? For me, they're definitely more friend, albeit on the pesky side! They feed so many species (including birds like goldfinch, who love their seeds) I can't imagine ever trying to eradicate them from my garden. That being said, I do try to limit exactly where they grow. They're whipped out of veg beds as quickly as I can, wherever I'm planting new stuff, or around things that might be easily crowded out by them. But I usually leave them to do their own thing in the garden path cracks and definitely in the lawn. They brighten the space up before a lot else is around, and I love the opportunities they give with photographing pollinators! 😊 #dandelions #dandelionflower #weedsareflowerstoo #mymonthontheplot #pollinatorplants #pollinatorfood #pollinators #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorfriendly #pollinatorflowers #yellowflowers #beefriendly #loosegardeners #beefriendlygarden #gardeningforbiodiversity #gardeningforsustainability #scottishgardens #ukgardens #scottishgardening #scottishgardeners #ukgardening #ukgardeners #stirling @mymonthontheplot

Tiny pond watch is back! 🥳 That’s right party people, the UK’s top hotspot for fat cats and inquisitive pigeons will be returning for regular programming. Thank you to all of my adoring fans for your patience in my absence. I hope my garden thrills and delights you all in the videos to come. Spring is in the air and the garden is coming back to life, with bees spotted on hellebores and frogs almost trampled to death by my over-excited dog. On a more serious note, if you have an outdoor space you are able to take care of, please think of the little guys, gals and pals who share this space with us. We are all blessed with amazing wildlife on our doorstep that need us now more than ever. Make a little pond, put out some bird food, plant some flowers and avoid harmful chemicals. It doesn’t take much to make a big, or tiny, difference in this world. ❤️ #tinypond #ukwildlife #pondwatch #springwatch #pondwatching #wildlife #savethebees #gardening #gardeningforwildlife #gardeningforsustainability #spring #flowers #mygarden #mygardentoday

Today's gardening highlight - clearing the overgrown grass away to find the rhubarb coming up strong and vibrant 🙌 This was relocated last year, along with our currant bushes, and didn't seem to cope so well with the move - so I'm thrilled to see these shoots this week & looking forward to more rhubarb gin, pickles and - obviously - crumble 😋😋 What's the best use you've found for the leaves on your rhubarb? Patty pans, courgettes yellow, green and striped. We have had a wonderful bounty this year from 10 plants. Still had a few that didn’t produce fruit this year so pleased we stuck to 10 as we didn’t feed these plants once this year. So plans for next year are to have 8 plants and feed them. Corn had started to go over so hastily harvested the lot this evening. Normally I pick too early but have gone the other way this year! Got some really good looking ears, and two of my plants had produced two decent ears each which is a nice bonus. Corn plants will always put the most energy into the top ear so it’s perfectly normal for the bottom ones to be small and undeveloped as in picture five. In the next few days I’ll get the plants out and just like that autumn will be on us! #harvest #corn #sweetcorn #homegrown #growyourown #howdoesyourgardengrow #girlswhogarden #peatfree #claysoil #vegpatch #vegetablegarden #veggarden #growing #greenfingers #abundance #veggiegarden #gardeningforsustainability #growyourownfood #honestgardens

My third year growing Katy Apples, and the tree is so full it's bending over it's own weight. Can highly recommend this variety of you're growing in Scotland: low maintenance, high crop yield & most importantly, super tasty! 😋 These ones are picked slightly early to thin the tree (the tree shot is after thinning), so they're a bit on the tart side just now, but will sweeten up more over the next few weeks. #growingapples #growyourownfruit #growyourown #gyo #apples #katyapples #foodmiles #gardeningforsustainability #foodgarden #fruittrees #appletrees #lazygardening #amateurgardener #scottishgardens #scottishgardener #ukgardening #ukgarden #ukgardener #stirlinggarden #stirling

DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT LISTS VIA SPOKANESCAPE Open the link below to find lists of drought tolerant annuals, perennials, shrubs, grasses, and trees. The lists are in PDF form and are downloadable. You can save money on your water bill and in turn save the planet. All plants, including water-smart plants, require an establishment period with consistent water to develop their roots. Planting in the fall or spring helps take advantage of natural precipitation and lower evapotranspiration rates and allows plants to become established before periods of drought. The recommended plants are listed with common and scientific names, size, area, flower color, flowering time, sun and water requirements, and comments. For example: Siskiyou Lewisia or Lewisia cotyledon Grows from 6" x 1.5 ft. Area of 2.25 sq. ft. Flower colors range from pastel pink, rose, salmon, orange, white, yellow and bicolour patterns Variable flowering times Prefers full son Low water needs Succulent green leaves and great numbers of beautiful flowers. Thrives in a well-drained soil and is heat and drought tolerant www.waterwisespokane.org https://www.spokaneaquifer.org/spokanescape-water-wise-landscaping/#:~:text=What%20is%20SpokaneScape%3F,and%20drought%20tolerant%20plant%20material. SUNDAY IN ROSE HILL GARDEN, MANITO PARK ROSE CARE Roses grow best in evenly moist soil. Irrigate roses as needed when the top 2 inches of soil become dry. Soil moisture can be checked by inserting a trowel or small shovel and observing the amount of moisture in the soil. The soil should be moist, not wet, to a depth of 8–12 inches. The amount and frequency of watering will depend on the amount of precipitation in your area, as well as the type of soil, temperature, sun exposure, and wind. When irrigating, avoid wetting plant foliage by using drip irrigation or soaker hoses. If this is not possible, water in the morning so foliage will dry quickly, avoiding the risk of potential diseases. Tidy up of the garden today and catching up on the jobs I’d postponed during the heat. I removed the pea canes now they’ve finished and tidied up the brassicas so I can now get around the veg patch and they’ve all got a bit more space. A lot of the leaves were full of holes and not doing the plants any good so with these gone they should grow back a bit stronger. While I was at it I harvested some broccoli, chard, and the fattest onion I’ve ever grown! Then I pruned the tomato jungle in the greenhouse again as it was starting to get a bit crowded. The fruit coming through make it all worth it, plus I need some sunlight to make it down to the basil, chilli, and marigolds! Feeling a bit more on top of it now and ready for all the summer abundance to come 💚 #homegrown #growyourown #vegpatch #peatfree #claysoil #honestgardens #veggarden #howdoesyourgardengrow #girlswhogarden #veggiegarden #harvest #growing #greenlife #greenthumb #grow #gardeningforsustainability #gardening #growhowknowhow #growfood #vegetablegarden #purplesproutingbroccoli #onions #chard #abundance #pruning #mygarden #growsomething

GROWING NASTURTIUMS WITH KIDS Nasturtiums are perfect to grow with children because they grow so easily and rapidly. These plants, with their bright greenery and vibrant flowers, are good for containers or as ground cover. Their pretty fragrance also makes them a good choice for cut flowers. They are an easy-to-grow annual whose leaves and flowers are edible. Here’s how to grow your own nasturtiums! PLANTING · Plant nasturtium seeds in early spring to summer in moist, well-drained soil in full sun. They can grow in partial shade, but they will not bloom as well. · Nasturtiums prefer poorer soils and they do not need fertilizers (unless your soil is extremely poor). Fertile soil will produce fewer blooms and more foliage. · Plant the seeds about half an inch deep and 10 to 12 inches apart. Plants should appear in 7 to 10 days. CARE · Water regularly throughout the growing season, but be careful not to over-water your plants. · Cutting off the faded/dead flowers will prolong blooming. · If you’re growing nasturtiums in containers, they may need to be trimmed back occasionally over the growing season. HARVEST/STORAGE · Save the nasturtium’s chick-pea-size seeds and replant them in the spring! Let the seeds dry out on the vine; they’ll fall off. Collect them, brush off the soil, dry them, and store them in a paper envelope in a cool and dark # place. https://landscape-water-conservation.extension.org/plants-for-water-wise-pollinator-gardens-nasturtium-tropaeolum-majus/ Photograph via Todd's Seeds #flowersofinstagram #gardenfunwithkids #growingnasturtium #edibleflowers #gardeninginspokane #inlandnw #savingseeds #gardeningforsustainability #pollinatorgarden #mastergardener #mastergardenersofspokanecounty
