Don't forget to do your Three Good Things gratitude practice today! Science is pretty clear, dopamine (the "feel good" neurotransmitter) and serotonin (the "happy" neurotransmitter) levels are boosted when we look for good stuff around us, regardless of if we find anything. If you are running around with your hair on fire, you can choose to ignore your gratitude practice today. However, it takes me less than 30 seconds to find 3 Good Things on my hair-fire days and I take up to a full five minutes to look for things going well on other days. This regular practice also retrains your brain to see the good instead of the bad! You can write your own 3 Good Things in a book or journal or dictate them into your phone or shout them into the ether. It doesn't matter. All that matters is that your brain is able to stop, look around and search for stuff that is going well. And...BAM! Dopamine and serotonin. 🌟Gratitude vs. Toxic Gratitude🌟 In world that emphasizes positivity, it’s important to understand the difference between genuine gratitude and its evil twin: toxic gratitude. This is an important lesson I’ve learned from my therapist recently. She had given me a homework assignment one day where I would focus on things I’m proud of, instead of things I’m grateful for. Now that I think about it, this practice fosters a sense of confidence and validation. It allows us to value what’s actually there. Gratitude practiced wrong can be very invalidating. There is constant saying that “be grateful for what you have because others have it worse”. We can still have a job and a family and feel sorrow, loneliness and anxiety. Just because someone else has a different experience doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to feel stressed or worried. GRATITUDE 10/30 - Quitting Alcohol In July of 2018 I attended a Lakota sweat ceremony and was visited by a white owl. I had laid down with my arms out in the lodge and I envisioned this owl laying on top of me with its wings outstretched over my arms. He whispered, “it’s time to let go of alcohol” so freaking clearly. I don’t know about you, but when Spirit sends me a message that clear, I know to listen to it (I don’t always, but that’s another post for another day..) I decided to challenge myself to quit for 1 year and see how it went. I completed that year and completely recalibrated my relationship with alcohol. My skin cleared, I lost some puffiness from my face and I lost some weight. The biggest thing for me though was living without the super LOUD inner critic and doubt monster that would show up the day after drinking. It hasn’t been a clean break, but we’re not getting back together. I am grateful that I listened and grateful to be able to live in this way and to show others. I’m grateful for the healing it has allowed from not constantly drowning out the pain. I’m grateful for the clarity of self, intuition and connection to spirit. I’m grateful for all the money saved and the rides I’ve been able to provide. Mostly, I’m grateful for choosing what felt right and true for me in the face of my own resistance and hesitations. Jusqu’au bout du jour… 💫 Les regarder jouer dans ce décors jusqu’à ce que la nuit tombe, pour moi, ça c’est vivre pleinement! C’est vivre l’instant présent et ne pas en perdre une miette. Pendant longtemps, une fois le soleil à peine caché derrière la ligne d’horizon, il fallait rentrer. Et ça, quand on y pense, c’est un peu comme sortir d’une salle de ciné sans voir la fin du film ou partir avant la fin du concert alors que le final est juste dingue… C’est vivre à moitié. Et moi, je ne veux plus jamais vivre à moitié. Je veux regarder le spectacle jusqu’au bout. A few years ago I signed up to the #hyggeintheearlyyears accreditation, however it was during a time that embracing hygge was really very difficult for me and I soon found myself straying from my studies due to stress and anxiety. Perhaps I needed it most then. Today I sat outdoors in the garden, beneath the sunshine, in the warm breeze. I had the two family dogs to provide me company and my favourite folk music playing aloud as I set about creating the first page of my new hygge scrapbook journal. Replacing my usual practice of scribbling pages of notes that end up lost or forgotten, with a creative and inspiring way to document my learning, in the beautiful spring sunshine - I rediscovered my own hygge in those moments when I wore a smile just for the joy of doing so. Your vibration shapes your reality. In a high vibration state, you become a magnet for positivity, abundance, and synchronicity. Your thoughts and emotions are in sync, leading to a flow of creative energy and effortless manifestation. Being in a low vibration stem from disconnection, fear, and negativity. They show up as doubt, worry, and limiting beliefs, creating resistance to fulfill your desires. In this state, you may feel stuck in patterns of self-sabotage, unable to break free from negative cycles. Understanding the power of vibration allows you to consciously shift your energy towards higher frequencies. By cultivating mindfulness, gratitude, and self-awareness, you can elevate your vibration so that you can align it with what you want to create in your life. Evaluate each vibration list in this post and determine whether you consistently operate from a high or low vibration. How does each state affect how you show up in your life? Remember, it’s okay to acknowledge low vibrations and work towards raising them. You just don’t want to be stuck there for a long period of time. Start and end your day with a grateful heart 🤍 Here are a couple of my favourite ways to show gratitude: 🤍 First thing in the morning I wake up and say “I am grateful for waking up today” 🤍 Listening to gratitude mantras in the car 🤍 Listing 3 things I am grateful for, big or small 🤍 Showing gratitude for my body by taking care of it 🤍 A gratitude journal (working on it 😉) 🤍 Before bed, listing all of the things I am grateful for in my day. Even if at the time I perceived them to be not so great Gratitude can be shown to things big and small. It can be shown towards the great things. And it can be shown towards what has taught us a lesson or something about ourselves. When I’m having a bad day, or if a friend is having a bad day I always try to list at least 3 things that I am grateful for because it helps bring perspective, it lifts the mood, and it brings you out of your head and into your heart centre. Did you know that you have on average 60,000 thoughts a day? And, up to 80% are negative? 🤯 Our minds love to ruminate, make up stories, and run on autopilot so unless we acitvely choose to redirect, refocus, and retrain our mind we’ll be seeing the negative and stuck in fear and survival mode. This is why Pause and mindfulness are so important and powerful. They disrupt the autopilot and default way of being ✨ Then you add a practice like Gratitude into the mix and it can be even more transormative. Gratitude builds mental strength and resilience while also rewiring and retraining your brain 🧠 Numerous studies of Gratitude have shown that it not only increases well-being, optimism, and social capital but it also reduces physical pain and symptoms of depression. That’s pretty powerful impact from a practice that only takes a few minutes each day. And know this: we don’t have to be grateful for everything - not everything is roses and unicorns and life dishes out hefty doses of hard things - but we can always find something in each moment to be grateful for, even if it’s that we simply made it through 🤩 Start small, the tiny things that we often take for granted are perfect starting points of gratitude. Being specific is also helpful and deepens your connection vs being superficial. I’m grateful for being alive, for this breath, for what my body can do for me, for this day and opporunity ahead, just to name a few. Whether you want to write your gratitude out, close your eyes and visualize, or speak them aloud, there’s no one way or ‘right’ way to practice. I recommend with once per day listing 1 to 3 things that you’re greatful for and appreciate. Set a reminder on your phone, do it while brushing your teeth, or right before bed to add it to a ritual you already have. Play around and see what works for you.
