When I’m busy, my ability to engage creatively dwindles, especially for EPP style projects because of how much planning, preparation, and time are required to do it. (If all that was needed was the stitching, I’d be set for life!) So for this #summerhomepillow, I wanted something that felt easily achievable while allowing me to still tap in to a bit of creative flow. Combining a hexie flower for some EPP, appliqué for some bonus hand stitching (optional), and a machine pieced log cabin block made with readily available 2.5” strips, was just the thing! No truer words have been spoken. When I lose my first reaction is to wallow in self-pity. “How could I let this happen? How did I not see this coming? What am I going to do now?” But those negative thoughts are quickly replaced with “Ok, that sucked, but what could I have done different? What could I have changed? How do I move forward from this and learn?” This simple shift in focus has made monumental changes in my life, even when the failures weren’t necessarily caused by me (losing my job). In 2010 I had just bought a house with my fiancé in November, and we had our wedding planned for December. Two weeks after buying the house and three weeks away from the wedding, I lost my job. I was doing contracting work for the U.S. Government, and they decided that our particular contract comprised of 20 Veterans was no longer in need. We went from being told our contract was secured one day, to literally the next day being told this was our last week of work. That was a tough pill to swallow. I had to go home to my soon to be wife, and explain to her that everything was about to change. I was angry, depressed, and frustrated. All of those emotions lasted about a day, as I knew that sitting there and sulking wasn’t going to change anything. So, I decided to get to work. I applied for college. Since I was a Veteran, I could use the Post 9/11 GI Bill which would pay me a monthly stipend, on top of paying for my schooling. I was a C-D-F student in high school so college was a stretch, but I did what the military taught me and I attacked. I took “accelerated courses” which meant I would take a full semester every 7 weeks. So essentially, I was completing two semesters worth of credits for every one semester, 24 credits a semester. I was a man on a mission. I applied for countless jobs and kept getting passed up, but I didn’t quit. I collected unemployment, while tackling school with extreme focus. Until finally landing a Federal Government job. I continued to go to college full time and work full time until I graduated with a 3.9 GPA, with Honors. That moment I realized that if I focused and set my mind on something, I could do anything. I could and I would…Win

Not like me this morning, having a “dream” and this horrible screeching siren thing (my alarm) interrupted the fight I was having with someone about who knows what because that shit never makes sense anyway. On a well-written and honest memoir of greed and ambition in the contemporary art world. This book was one of the books I looked forward to reading the most this year. I obviously had it pre-ordered and when it was finally published, I read it pretty much in one go. I think I’ve seen it featured in various lists of books to read this year, and I can totally see why. It has all the vibes of a great true crime and for once, it’s not purely about high finance. Nothing against that, but this book is rather special. It’s a truly fascinating story, one that tells the story of how one charismatic man, Inigo Philbrick, managed to exploit the mechanics of the contemporary art market. He was subsequently convicted of fraud. To be more exact, his onetime friend, Orlando Whitfield tells his story via this memoir. You read not only about Philbrick’s meteoric rise and fall, but also about how they two met, became friends and worked together. The book actually reveals a lot about how the contemporary art market (and world) works generally and that’s great as Whitfields’ writings bring things to life. I also enjoyed reading about the reflective moments of a past friendship and mourning its loss. “I came to see that the act of writing this book had been not simply an attempt at understanding the art market and my time in it, but also of Inigo himself and the friendship which more than any other had shaped, even defined, my adult life. Inigo ultimately evaded me, his chimeric unknowability not unlike the world that had brought us together. As I have written about our friendship I have been struck by the inadequacy of language to describe platonic relationships; that lexicon is geared towards romance.
