There is so much research now that demonstrates the great extent to which we can influence our health with simple mind-body techniques. If you’re feeling temporarily under the weather or dealing with a longer-term condition, here are some quick tips for boosting your immunity: 1) As much as possible, don’t get stuck in survival emotions such as fear, worry, self-criticism, stress, anger, etc. All emotions give us valuable information, and also it’s well documented now that survival emotions suppress the immune system. 2) As much as possible, generate uplifting emotions such as love, joy, gratitude, connection, inspiration, etc. They are all immune boosters. 3) Heart energy is healing. Put your hands on your heart and take slow deep breaths, imagining heart energy flooding through your body. 4) Physical comfort is healing. Hug others, hug yourself, pet your dog or cat, curl up in a cozy blanket. 5) Lift your spirits! Listen to uplifting music, watch inspiring movies/tv shows/videos, read inspiring books. 6) Connect with people you love who love you. Keep the conversation positive. 7) Laugh! Even fake laughter gets our healing neurotransmitters flowing. 8) Remember times in the past when you felt healthy and happy, and imagine times in the future when you feel healthy and happy. The more detailed you make your visualizations (what you see, hear, feel, smell, taste, etc.), the more you’ll generate positive emotions, which will cause more healing neurotransmitters to be released into your bloodstream. Stay with the good 🌻 This simple HEAL practice by @rickhansonphd offers a way to deliberately internalize positive experiences. 1. Have a positive experience Here a positive mental state is activated. This could happen by recalling a positive memory, feeling into gratitude, being present with the beauty around you, etc. The next 3 steps help install it into the brain. 2. Enrich it Stay with the experience 5-10 seconds at least. Invite the experience to intensify. Allow it to flood the senses and the mind. Can you notice anything new or how it might be especially nourishing, helpful, or relevant? Recruiting the neurons to fire together supports them to wire together. 3. Absorb it Take in the experience fully, becoming it as it becomes you. 4. Link positive and negative material This last step is optional. It invites you to keep this positive experience at the forefront of your awareness and also allow some awareness of a negative experience in the background. For example, if you’re feeling the joy of connection and sitting with those feelings, you can hold light awareness of times in the past you felt lonely and allow the positive experience to support the brain’s “rewiring.” This process isn’t about denying or resisting the feelings that come with more challenging experiences. It is important to allow yourself to feel those feelings too.
