June's Trauma Informed Yoga Classes 6 - 7.15 pm @thefourthfloormovement Brief look into the first session 7th June - How do we feel an embodied sense of security? Not feeling safe in our body’ is something many experience. It shows up in different ways depending on the trauma and internalised experiences that have caused a baseline feeling of lack of safety. A little of my own exploration on this and self inquiry If I were to feel more safe, I would also have a less of a need to control everything around me, I could let go a little, and breath. So my next focus becomes understanding how to create feelings of safety for myself, and there are many different ways I can help facilitate this. What could you do to help facilitate feelings of safety for yourself? If you're stuck on this these are some suggestions that may help - 4 count equalising breath (four counts in, four count hold, four count exhale, four count hold repeat 4 times) - Holding the body like a self hug - Affirmation of "I am safe right here, right now" (and notice how this feels and is responded to in the body) June 14th - How to be with self awareness

Did my first ever practice teaching session today, with 3 of my beautiful besties. ❤️‍🔥 It was the first time I have ever shared any of it with anyone! EVER! And I even recorded it. As hard as it is to watch the video after (lord, do I fidget to get my ass comfy on a cushion 🤣), I feel really really good about it overall. Being able to use Courtney's space @studio414mtl was amazing, and made me feel profesh. 🙏🏾 We did a kriya for releasing trauma, and meditation for a calm heart. I can't even describe how lovely it was to impart these techniques to others. And the fact that it was people I love made it extra beautiful. One of the things some participants find useful about TCTSY is that they don't have to tell their story in this modality. What we're doing is showing healthy relationship. We're learning how to experience our bodies as safe, reliable sources of wisdom in which we can trust. Participants don't have to relive or re-experience a stressful event in this practice. They don't have to process or make sense of what happened. It isn't a cognitive experience. Yesterday I had the honor of representing @veteransyogaproject at the NH @theamericanlegion state convention. One veteran came up to me afterwards and was excited to learn we offer free, virtual classes. He asked twice to make sure and couldn’t get the details fast enough. 🌟Gratitude vs. Toxic Gratitude🌟 In world that emphasizes positivity, it’s important to understand the difference between genuine gratitude and its evil twin: toxic gratitude. This is an important lesson I’ve learned from my therapist recently. She had given me a homework assignment one day where I would focus on things I’m proud of, instead of things I’m grateful for. Now that I think about it, this practice fosters a sense of confidence and validation. It allows us to value what’s actually there. Gratitude practiced wrong can be very invalidating. There is constant saying that “be grateful for what you have because others have it worse”. We can still have a job and a family and feel sorrow, loneliness and anxiety. Just because someone else has a different experience doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to feel stressed or worried. *NEW* We are so excited to introduce the “Resilience Toolkit” Workshop Series with Victoria Rojas @returnomyoga coming this summer! This collection of workshops explore components crucial to grow, sustain and maintain resilience. Each month we will dive into a new topic: “Sleep”, “The Anatomy of Stress” and “Attention Training”. During each 90 minute workshop, participants will explore the science behind each topic, why it’s crucial to resilience and learn relevant ways to integrate these learnings into our day to day life through a blend of lecture, discussion and a mindful yoga practice. In keeping with our mission, this resource will be offered as FREE to veterans, active duty service members and first responders, including police, fire, EMT and correction officers. Here’s a ques I’ve been asked a lot about Trauma-Informed Yoga: I get therapy, I see the benefits, but why would I need smth ELSE to add on to my treatment? Let’s explore why for some, talking therapy isn’t enough. Pls note I am in no way saying don’t do therapy! It is vital. These are based on the latest research on Trauma & personal feedback I’ve received from clients. 😟 You can’t always find the words to express how you feel ➡️ this is natural when we’re trying to process smth. Studies have shown that when we experience trauma, the neural pathways in our brain can disconnect, making it hard to verbalise. Without knowing how to rebuild those neural pathways somatically, we won’t be able to override the body’s learned trauma responses. We can’t get into healing mode if our body doesn’t feel safety first. Trauma-informed Yoga can really help with that. 😓 You don’t see your physical symptoms improving ➡️ maybe your talking therapy is helping, but the visceral symptoms won’t go. Things like digestive problems, appetite issues, trouble sleeping, extreme fatigue, chronic pain… a lot of these are issues that a therapist can empathise with but it may not be in their skill set to help. Yoga & its sister science Āyurveda are by no means one & done cures on their own, but they can certainly aid with these VERY real health problems that are associated with our mental state. 😪 You can’t shake the feelings of loneliness ➡️ maybe you really appreciate your therapist’s support, but besides them, you feel like no one else really ‘gets it’. And also perhaps the recognition that you’re paying your therapist TO get it, which may not be the same thing as someone understanding what you’re going through on their own. This is one I really resonate with. We are naturally social beings and so feeling isolated from others of course adds a double whammy when you’re already struggling. One of Yoga’s underlying principles is Sangha. Finding purpose, support and strength from a support network is that missing piece that many don't realise. This session is inquiring into what it means and feels to live in self-acceptance <3 We explore rebuilding self-acceptance via acknowledging and validating emotions that arise from stresses or traumas, releasing the grip of judgment to help in processing experiences and move into inner healing.

Spare five minutes to take part in research that may help change the future of treatment approaches for PTSD and C-PTSD. Body-centered approaches to PTSD & C-PTSD - survey now live! We invite you to participate in this first of its kind research, created in partnership between PTSD UK and The Minded Institute. Our primary aim is to raise awareness and understanding around the importance of body-centred approaches in treating PTSD & C-PTSD. Body-centred approaches (otherwise known as somatic therapies) recognise that emotional, psychological and relational patterns are held and expressed within the body. Rather than focusing solely on thoughts or emotions associated with a traumatic event, body-centred approaches also address somatic (physical/physiological) symptoms. Through this survey we also hope to understand more about how yoga, as a body-centred approach, can help to manage symptoms of PTSD & C-PTSD, and ultimately to inform guidelines regarding future treatment approaches so that those suffering have access to a wider range of support. Your responses will remain anonymous and your data will be handled with the utmost care, in line with our privacy policy. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you have the option to skip any questions that you are not comfortable answering. The survey should only take around 5 minutes to complete. This is something to be curious and open about exploring in a neurodivergent person's life. A neurodivergent person may be more vulnerable to developing PTSD due to how their brains are wired to respond. For example, some neurodivergent brains process and integrate sensory information in ways that are already more overwhelming and anxiety-provoking. They may have trouble articulating what they need to say, how to figure out where they need to go, and how they need to get there. Additionally, the systems that are in place to help them might end up making their experience even more difficult. Examples include emergency rooms that are overstimulating and police stations where the staff might not be trauma-informed. Their behavior may be dismissed as attention-seeking or over-dramatizing. Even finding somewhere to park can be overwhelming. So they often just try to figure out how to cope on their own. How can trauma sensitive yoga help? It can help us learn to trust what our body is telling us again. It can help build, from the foundation, a connection to our body to understand what it is telling us and that it is safe and important. In May 🌸 I'm running a four session trauma informed yoga seres Trauma is an event that has happened but has had a lasting impact on the mind-emotions and often body, in a way that causes distress and suffering. We can heal from traumas by creating safety mentally-emotionally-physically, with patience, care, and through compassionate awareness. These four sessions are exploring: May 3rd - What it is to feel safety "I don’t need to be stronger, I just need to feel safe" It’s very easy to get disembodied. We disconnect from our body’s wisdom because we override our needs out of understandable fear responses. Letting my body gently have a say (as much or even more at times than my mind) by creating safety, has been an incredibly important practice for me to be able to integrate experiences that were highly stressful and as a result I am continually relieved from states of trauma (frozen passed suffering experiences). 10th - What it is to be in Self-Acceptance Rebuilding self-acceptance begins with acknowledging and validating emotions that arise from stresses or traumas. Being able to express feelings without judgment can help to process experiences and move towards healing. 17th - What it is to cultivate Compassionate Awareness It is common when we have experienced trauma that we can blame ourselves for the events that occurred. Practicing self-compassion involves treating oneself with kindness and understanding. Compassionately challenging self-critical thoughts and cultivating self-affirming language, ensuring we do it with gentleness and not more blame. 24th - What is it to live with Courage Reminding ourselves of our strengths and past resilience in coping with life's challenges can be really important in bringing back perspective of our ability to know we have capacity to deal with challenge. By highlighting our own ability to endure and overcome adversity, we may realise there is hope and find our inner confidence in our ability to make progress and release stresses and traumas. Disconnection from our felt sense of belonging leaves our emotions floundering in a vacuum of loneliness. It leaves our rational minds to create fantasies based on disconnection rather than connection." -- Levine, 1997. Trauma sensitive yoga seeks to foster connection by practicing yoga together. The facilitator engages in the practice with the participants, they do not tell the participants what to do. They offer options (different variations) for whether or not one chooses to practice at all as well as different options within a particular shape. The facilitator chooses the option that works best in their own body so that the participant is free to choose the option that works best in theirs. It is an orchestration of offering and engaging. The facilitator does not make hands on adjustments and they do not get up and walk around the room. This is to cultivate and reinforce a sense of safety: the facilitator is not going to watch the participants from behind them where they cannot see or when they are in a potentially vulnerable shape (though facilitators aim to avoid vulnerable shapes altogether). This is to create the freedom and space for the participant to choose how they want to practice, without external influence, without being pushed or coerced to be in the shape differently. Is your practice reactive or responsive?  This is something I've had precious time to reflect upon and discuss with like-minded folk of late. I used to think that there is a formula or "the" practice for wellbeing but I've come to realise that it is learning, embodying and practising various things that empower us towards our wellbeing. Of course, some days our energy is off, low, depleted, erratic or actually we are feeling ok. So how do we meet these various mind body states with dedication to our practice whilst also being compassionate towards ourselves and recognising our reactive patterns? Meet the team Tuesday!⁠ ⁠ This week we want to introduce you to one of our newest team members, Shana Kaplan.⁠ ⁠ Shana has stepped in while Steve is recovering from surgery to lead our Hudson series at the American Heritage Museum Thursday nights.⁠ ⁠ Shana received her RYT200 with Baptiste Power Yoga in Boston, and completed her 200-hr foundational Ayurveda course through Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. While doing a different kriya every day in Kundalini yoga is certainly a great way to explore how different practices live in your body, doing one kriya for 40 days is the recommendation--this is the length of time it takes to make new habits and internalize positive effects. A kriya is simply a specific set of exercises done in a specific order. The kriya I am currently working with is called Elementary Adjustment of the Brain (find great written instructions on pinklotus.org), and is great for helping to release trauma that is stored in the body--by adjusting and regulating the brain. It works directly on the pineal and pituitary glands. Above you'll see a couple of action shots which integrate breathwork and mudras (or hand gestures). Different mudras stimulate differeny energetic channels in our bodies.
