Blessed Ostara (and International Happiness Day, I don't think that's a coincidence is it?!) We have decorated our tree with eggs and symbols of spring and all that it represents, growth, new life, the continuing turns of the wheel of the year. I read a passage in "The Children's Forest" book this morning which describes the goddess Ostara as "the daughter of heaven". I think this is beautiful, Flo's favourite season was spring and she loved spotting new growth, insects, bees and butterflies emerging and watching the birds nesting. Spring was the reason green was her favourite colour because she said it was sign of new things coming and spring and the warm sunshine arriving. Spring is almost here, the light has returned, WE MADE IT! The daffodils are in full bloom, and the magnolia blossoms are blushing in the sun on full display. This time of year always makes me feel a sense of renewal and gratitude. The pivot point of spring equinox is near. Deciduous trees are waking, their sap rising, and I feel myself thawing out too; my blood quickening under the warming sun. Soon, queen bumblebees will wake from their winter slumber in abandoned rodent cavities, rotten wood, clumps of grasses, or beneath the soil and a blanket of autumn leaves. Migrating birds will return to nest and fill mornings with song, and tender shoots of spring ephemerals will rise from underground. As I walk through the woods, I sink into tender earth and see deer tracks, dark depressions now, disturbing the soil, making space for new life to grow. In the Northern Hemispher, the spring equinox usually falls on March 20th or 21st, but it occurs on March 19th this leap year. During an equinox, the sun sits directly above the equator, balancing day and night. Annual celestial events — spring and autumn equinox, summer and winter solstice - are my favorite times for ritual. Wild rituals connect me to the cyclical nature of life, remind me of my relationship to deep time, and keep me in sync with my animal body. Aligning with nature’s rhythms aligns me with who I am. As nature is always changing, the wheel of time is always spinning. You grow and blossom and slowly die off to be reborn again. This can happen many times within a single lifetime. Today, February 2nd, is a turning point known as Imbolc in Gaelic tradition. Midway between winter solstice and spring Equinox, this agrarian festival of fire celebrates increasing light, the awakening of ‘the goddess’ and life trying to shed winter. The word "imbolc" means "in the belly," referring to ewes and cows who are about to give birth and whose udders are filled with milk. This is a time when seeds of spring are beginning to stir in Earth. And it is mating season for wolves, foxes, coyotes, and other wild relatives. My Imbolc reflections... This time of year is usually the greyest and least appealing. It’s cold. It’s wet, and we can feel like winter is never ending. But if we just look up and start acknowledging the small changes in the air and ground, we can see tiny shoots of green, new life. The day is about an hour or so longer than when we were celebrating the winter solstice, and wildlife is starting to wake up slowly but surely—more insects, maybe more birds, and the bunnies usually start to wake up around this time too 🌱🐇☀️🐝🕷️ This is a good reminder that things don’t happen overnight. The same goes for your goals; nothing will happen overnight, no matter how much spell work or intention setting you do. There has to be this process, this cycle of action and chain reactions. 🔄 Imbolc is for planting the seeds. 🌱We don’t plant seeds and expect flowers within 24 hours; we enjoy the process of watching the seed spring its shoot up through the soil, growing into a green plant, followed by blooming into colour and flowers, and finally we see the fruit, the end goal of the labor it has taken to get to that point 🍓🍎🍉🍋🍏🍅 Today, we plant seeds and align ourselves with the plan of getting to the fruit. I know, it’s not Christmas anymore. I finally took down my pencil trees and all the overtly Christmas decorations yesterday. I like to leave up the small trees and angels around the fireplace and mantel until Spring. And the lights stay up year round because they’re so cozy and lend a bit of magic to the everyday. How are you, friends? I’ve been quiet here on Instagram this month. My friend Ellie used to say I turned into a hermit in January and it’s true! I get into my projects and books and goal-setting and new habits I’m forming and I vanish from view. With Imbolc/Brigid’s Day only nine days away I am beginning to feel the stirrings of that more light-filled energy. I’m thinking how I want to celebrate this year: what food will I make, what music, what flowers for the table and what other decor can I make. Good Morning Folks February 1st heralds Imbolc and the first stirrings of Spring. Delicate snowdrops push through the iron hard earth at the coldest point of Winter. Candles, fires and forges are lit to keep warmth and welcome the light. The first food is beginning to appear with lambs after the tupping from Samhain. Brigid is our Goddess, she is the augur of fertility and growth and of craftsman/smithing, often depicted tending a forge and milking the ewes. Imbolcs meaning 'in the belly' is literally the pregnancy of Spring that leads to the birth, abundance of Summer and on to harvest. Self Care Sunday - ‘enchanted living is slow living.’ I ended 2023 feeling fairly frazzled & burnt out. Any self care rituals had stopped, and I felt as if I was always doing ‘stuff’ but never achieving anything. Anyone else know that feeling? A bath full of flowers and essential oils, candles, a face mask, and a good book is one of my favourite ways to reset. 💞 Bath bomb - one that I made recently. A simple mix that included lavender, rose & calendula petals with pachouli, rose absolute, lavender & Frankincense essential oils. An earthy wood nymph scent. Facemask - Rose Glow Clay Balm by Love Absolute. I usually make my own face masks, but I stumbled across this one when looking for Christmas gifts.
