It’s been a rough couple of weeks..😅 I took 2 weeks off to rest my wrist & groin. I felt good to come back…but after 2 lifting days my wrist started to hurt again so I’ve decided to give it more rest & focus on lower body/ cardio for a couple of weeks. Hoping I don’t lose any upper body progress while I recover 🥲 This is the most inconsistent I’ve been in the gym since I started. Strong runners work on ✅single-leg strength/stability ✅lateral strength ✅ balance training Do a few sets of 12-15 on each side. As you get stronger increase the weight you hold or increase the height of the box. Over time do both! Progressions: 👉no weight 👉add weight 👉higher step 👉more weight If you have poor single-leg strength/stability and balance, it increases your injury risk while running. Running is a single-leg sport, you have to repeatedly land, stand and balance on one leg over the duration of your run. • 𝔹𝕠𝕕𝕪𝕨𝕖𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥 𝔼𝕩𝕖𝕣𝕔𝕚𝕤𝕖 • Gestern ging es vor der Arbeit zum Gewichte stemmen um dann am Nachmittag noch ein bisschen mehr Zeit zu haben für die Gartenarbeit. 🌿🪴 Das Training gestern war eher Kabelzug-lastig und ich habe viel mit Körpergewicht gearbeitet, wie im Video oben 👆 zu sehen ist. Eigentlich brauch man für die Übung nicht viel: eine Bank oder einen Kasten zum hochsteigen. Die Idee hinter dem "lateral step up" ist, die Beinkraft zu stärken und das Gleichgewicht zu schulen. Gleichzeitig muss man darauf achten, dass man so wenig wie möglich mit Schwung arbeitet und aufpasst, dass das Knie nicht nach innen "abknickt" und die Hüfte sich absenkt. Anonsten verfehlt man die gewünschte Bewegung und es ist auch nicht gut für die Gelenke. Let’s Bend Our Aging Curve today‼️ One way to play with bending your own aging curve is to take normal everyday activities, some of which can become more difficult as we grow older, and play with them. Brain (central nervous system) likes to be challenged and will respond - this is called neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change & adapt as a result of experience. We also train the joints and tissues to adapt and respond. And our balance systems are taxed in new and interesting ways. One of my favorite things about lateral training is that we use the outside hip muscles differently than when we walk or step forward and this helps hip, knee, and even ankle stability. And we load the important patellar tendon (the tendon that crosses over the knee) differently,, asking it to slowly dole out length over the knee (a super important job!) while balancing and carrying our head, arms, and trunk in a different movement pattern. Mini band resisted lateral step ups. I got this exercise from @drchelseabarnespt . I’ve been asked before where I get some of the new exercises I use in my programs. It can be as simple as I picked it up from watching someone perform or I saw a video of someone performing it. But I don’t just say “that looks cool I’m gonna try that with a client”. I go through a little check list first and ask myself some questions. 1️⃣ I try the exercise out first myself. I want to see how it works and feels. 2️⃣ If I like the exercise and feel it is useful I ask myself who would I use this exercise with? 3️⃣ Where would this exercise fit in my workouts? How would I program it? 4️⃣ Can I progress or regress this exercise? 5️⃣ How easy is it to learn and how easy is it to coach? This particular exercise I think is really good for glute activation, targeting the gluteus medius muscle (which I notice can be weak in many people) and getting some lateral movement with the glutes in the frontal plane of movement (many people just work the glutes in the sagittal plane with exercises like deadlifts and hip thrusts). Today was a good workout. I did 2 exercises in each AMRAP for 10 mins 8 total exercises . Before I start every AMRAP I did 10 kettle bell dead lifts 40lbs. The first two exercises I did 10 wall plank push-ups and 10 thrusters with band. Second set I did 30 secs weighted suicide glides and 10 box jumps. Third I did 5 each leg lateral slow step down with dumbbell and 10 Farmers carry with lunges. Fourth I did 10 each side wood chops and 10 shoulder band leg drops. It looks like I peed on myself but I swear it’s sweat at least most of it is😬😂😬😂. My physical therapy exercises have become quite a workout. The appointments go for an hour and it’s usually focused on one side so I make sure when I’m home I’m doing both…which takes longer. Plus I’m an overachiever apparently and add more exercises. These exercises are just old things I’m revisiting. It’s working out well. I’m getting harder and harder exercises each time I go in. Functional Fridays 🚶‍♀️ . As we age, we start to lose muscle and flexibility as a result of decreased activity or joint disorders. To keep your lower body strength it’s important to incorporate strength training and functional movements into your workouts so you can maintain or increase muscle mass, improve balance, coordination, and decrease any joint pain . So why not include an exercise that targets all the lower body major muscle groups & mimic something we do multiple times everyday ——— STEP UPS ——— Step-ups hit all the major muscle groups in your lower body. The quads bear the brunt of the action but the move works your glutes, hamstrings and calves too . Not only will they increase your overall leg strength, the unilateral element will play a role in fixing the muscle size and strength imbalances that are holding you back from reaching your bilateral leg exercise goal . Step ups can also help to improve power, stability & stamina by performing different variations ——— Things to think about; - Drive through the foot that’s not the box (front foot) - POSTURE !! Most times, if you just execute lifts well, pains should not precipitate. Doing a step-up is by no means reinventing the wheel. This is just a video done to show how to keep weight through the front leg and heel/mid foot as you come up. When done correctly, the knees should not be stressed. The quads 100% should be. Video 1 - Standard Step Up -The hips and shoulders are stacked with the knee forward and weight going on the front leg. -You keep pressure through the front on the way down rather than plopping and seeing the shin become completely vertical. -The weights are positioned to bias a turn toward the lead hip in order to load into that hip more. Video 2 -Lateral Step Up -All things remain the same except for having the weight shifted over the lead leg and staying centered on it. -When you lower, you stay centered and the step-up leg side hip should be higher than the down leg. My Aunt Angela always comes to put in work. It's not about being perfect, it's about getting started on your journey, learning, and knowing it's fine to fall off track, but know how to get back and work on consistency. Health and fitness is a journey, so it takes time and work. Nothing happens over night. I got her doing some full-body exercises in between her shoulder work to tone those arm and legs, while working that core. Today was a great lift day! I increased a few exercises in weight in my routine. This is the most weight I’ve pressed on my back squat...ever! The lateral box step up and slow decent have been added in to work on activating the glutes (they’ve been lazy and letting my hamstrings take over 😜). High box squats to overload and feel that crush me feeling on back. Worked to 3x5@215 🤔 Soooo this is how quarter squats feel 🤣 FUN 🤩😍 1️⃣Box squats warmups 3x8 3x5 at a challenging weight drop back light 2 sets of pulse/ pause in the hole. 2️⃣ Leg press building: 20-15-12-10-10 drop back to another 15 at the 15 rep set weight. Triset: 4 rounds 15 leg extensions (slow) 10 Hindu squats (35lbs) 12 narrow stance squats Superset 3x 10 dumbbell RDLS (45’s) 3x 10 Sumo DB deadlift (120-145-160) rigged more with band.
