7 Fundamental Lateral Plyos for Basketball Athletes - Here’s some clips of the base prep phase for basketball athletes… - 1. Lateral Push Offs 2. Progressive Skater 3. Ascending Skater 4. Skater for Stability 5. Reactive Skater 6. Skater with Contralateral Reach 7. Skater to Vertical - These are very basic jumps that will be prescribed with tons of volume. I don’t hammer lateral shuffles more than lateral plyos bc I want to avoid doubling down on what the athlete is already doing on the court. - Elevating an athlete doesn’t require as much creativity with your movements as it does creativity in your communication and getting the greatest stimulus for that session. You see this so often..a trainer buys an expensive piece of equipment and then does drills which are not designed for that piece of equipment. • How resistance is applied is more important as IF resistance is applied. • Plyometric exercises are meant to produce vertical force off the ground. You have to train with intent, with specific focus. You have to literally teach the body to be quick twitch, reactive, and explosive. This athlete kept jumping while standing straight up. Doing this doesn’t allow you to access any power or have any explosive leverage. This also doesn’t allow you to develop properly. After I showed her what she was doing incorrectly, she started moving laterally more efficiently than usual, teaching her body to move quickly in the lateral plane, allowing her to actually develop. Work Hard - Reap Results 🏀🏋🏽‍♂️ I’ve had the pleasure of working with Sun & Shug for the last 3 years now - mainly in a group setting. More recently, we’ve begun to work more consistently on a 1 on 1 basis to really get closer to their physical goals. One of those goals was to improve their athleticism and jumping ability. I’ve been very transparent with their father and them in that this isn’t a sprint. I don’t want to chase a higher vertical number and forget about their longevity and all the other factors that play into their athleticism on the court. Over the last 5-6 weeks, we’ve included a minimal amount of plyometric volume and have emphasized improving their ankle and hip strength/coordination. The improvements you see above in “RSI” is in their reactive strenght index. RSI has been established as a measure of explosive strength and demonstrates how athletes perform plyometric activities. It is a simple ratio involving two metrics: How high can you jump? How fast can you jump? This is just the start to the summer. Miles to go before next years school season. I think it’s important that parents and athletes understand the long game.
