Gratitude Jar I did this activity with my support group. At the end of each session I got each participant to write down what they were most grateful for. At the end of our 9 weeks we all took a few out and read each of them. It was heart warming to listen to all the things we are grateful for. This is an important activity for cancer survivors. We have so many dark thoughts, on an hourly basis! We need to create positive practices that help us manage those dark thoughts. Create your own gratitude jar, or even journal. I have a journal that sits next to my bed and I add in what I am grateful for. It makes such a difference, allowing you to identify the positive things you have in your life. You'll see. These are important strategies for those suffering with mental health issues and cancer survivors. Do you have a gratitude journal or jar? #fridaymood Our field is dominated by women. The BACB stats shows this clearly. So I’m going to share a parallel that we women can identify with. When we go to the doctor for health issues, we are not surprised by the experience that we often have. We’re not surprised when we’re gaslit, when our concerns or pains are dismissed, and when we are unseen and unheard as humans. We know and experience these frustrating and demeaning situations all too often. So why do we find ourselves doing the same thing to those in our care? How have we justified this in our minds and in our hearts as acceptable ways to treat others when we know exactly what it feels like to be completely ignored and seen only as a problem, a hysteric, or just another appointment to bill? Why did we let the “Fathers” of the field convince us to shut down that maternal, caring part of us in the name of science?

BRB, off for my lunch break ☀️ Honestly, sometimes I resent the fact that I have to have a day job. I get frustrated when all I want to be doing is coaching, but because I refuse to get into that graspy place of “needing” clients to have an income, I choose to have a day job to provide the financial stability that I need (for now). And sometimes it sucks. But then I remember that a few years ago, when I was a lawyer, it was a DREAM to be able to leave the office at lunch to get some fresh air. If you’d told me that right now I’d be working remotely wherever I want and sunbathing on my lunch break, I might have died of happiness! It’s a good reminder for me that wherever I am, there’s a past version of me who used to dream of my current reality. Whatever my income. Whatever my location. Whatever my body shape. Whatever my relationship status. At some point in time, I wished for this. And I’m not meaning of a picture! It’s a really useful way to approach challenges that we have to face day to day. Imagine you’ve got something in your diary on Thursday that you’re not looking forward to. If you dread that event, start thinking that it’s going to go wrong or you’re not going to enjoy it, your mind takes onboard how you’re feeling about that event and believes it. You will approach Thursday with a negative mindset. How about ‘reframing’ that event? Perhaps look at it in a different way; I might learn something from that event that I didn’t know, if it goes well I will treat myself to a nice coffee after, if I wear a nice outfit I’m going to feel good on Thursday. You will then head towards Thursday feeling more positive about that day. I'm very big on practicing what I preach. If I tell it to my clients it's because 9/10 times I've implemented those changes into my personal life. As therapists, we're constantly pouring out, mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically, but who's pouring back into us? Where do you feel most supported? Who do you talk to when you're overwhelmed? It's a total misconception to think we have all the answers and can treat ourselves. We NEED support also. Call that trusted friend, reach out to your mom/dad, siblings, or whoever lends a safe, listening ear or assistance in your time of need. Reframing PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) Defined as: 😤 Extreme avoidance and resistance to carry out tasks associated with everyday life. 😤 Immediate refusal no matter how big or small of a request. 😤 Extreme avoidance/resistance also occurs even when the request/task is of obvious benefit and interest to the individual. 😤In response to an outsiders requests, PDA-ers typically display strong outward behaviours i.e disobedience, emotional meltdowns and physical behaviours. What is happening for a PDA-er? 😤 Demand Avoidance is defined by what an outsider would see- defiant, disobedient etc 😤 Internally, PDA-ers are constantly in a heightened state of anxiety and hypervigilance (See previous post on "Sensory Safety"). 😤Hypervigilance triggers unrelenting need for control to manage anxiety associated with the unpredictability of the external environment. This also includes expectations/requests from others. ** Important to note that requests and expectations to complete tasks in daily life are coming from outside the individual – Anything coming from outside the individual challenges autonomy and threatens state of homeostasis.** 😤 This activates the flight, fight or freeze response and triggers an extreme visceral and physical response such as anger, panic and shutdown. 😤Most commonly seen when an Indvidual is asked to complete a task while in Flow/Attention Tunnels. How to support PDA-ers We must reframe our understanding and approach toward PDA. PDA should be referred to as Pervasive Drive for Autonomy! “Pushing for compliance is impossible. Stop attacking working parents. They need support, not criticism. I've heard it all about working parents: ❌ Too lazy ❌ Too entitled ❌ Not prioritising work ❌ Taking too much time off ❌ Incompetent ❌ Not committed enough ❌ Taking the p*ss But if organisations, and leaders, took a little time to learn more. They might realise that some parents have it tough. Working parents are doing their damn best. What if it was more like this: ❌ Too lazy ➡️ My two year old isn't sleeping at night ❌ Too entitled ➡️ I'm just desperate for you to understand what I'm going through ❌ Not prioritising work ➡️ My teenager is going through a mental health crisis ❌ Taking too much time off ➡️ My dad is dying of cancer ❌ Incompetent ➡️ I'm struggling to learn new things and learn how to parent at the same time ❌ Not committed enough ➡️ I'm a single parent doing my best ❌ Taking the p*ss ➡️ Who, me or you? You see how the entire narrative changes when we learn a bit more about the issues working parents face. Everyone is different. Organisations need to do more to support working parents. Did you know that some studies have shown that 70-80% of the thoughts we have each day are negative? We also live with something called negativity bias, which means even if the negative thoughts we have aren't as big, as important, or as prevalent as the positive ones, we tend to dwell on them more. But there is good news! We have the power to change our perspective, to change HOW we think about things. This doesn't involve ignoring the thoughts, but instead, we can reframe them. Instead of 'I'm too fat for these jeans' try 'my thighs are too powerful for these jeans'. Instead of 'I suck at managing money' try 'I know this is something I need help with'. Instead of 'I can't do that' try 'I can't do that YET'. (This one I learned from my child's school!) We can get stuck in a loop of negative thoughts, but we have the ability to change these thoughts with a few tools. Of course there are other factors that can influence how we think, things like mental health issues, overwhelm and exhaustion, lack of sleep/nutrition, which is why I advocate for being the best YOU before you try to be the best business owner/partner/parent/friend. But the more we reframe HOW we think about things, the easier it will become to train your brain into shifting perspective. What can you change your perspective on today? Rates of depression can increase with women during menopause. When estrogen levels drop, serotonin levels also fall, which contributes to increased irritability, anxiety and sadness. 😔 Women can be made feel like there is "something wrong" with them. This is driven by ignorance. There is not enough knowledge and awareness out there on perimenopause and menopause. Women have suffered in silence for long enough. Can you really change your mindset? 🧠 Changing your mindset can be easy if you start off with the right intention. It’s a bit like a diet, it’s easy to start but difficult to sustain. So I would say it’s not always about ability and motivation but more about your inspiration and discipline to create lasting change. 🏃‍♀️ Like many of us we start off strong and then the motivation and drive fades. It’s like going to the gym believing it was going to change your life this time! Well how many times have you presented this same behaviour but then 3/4 days in it seems like too much work and you give up, you find some excuse why you won’t be able to change “it hasn’t worked in the past” “I didn’t like the instructor” “I didn’t have enough time” well here’s the funny thing…. That’s your mindset. 🧠 You have a belief that you won’t achieve the outcome you desire so there for you give up at the slightest sight of difficulty or discomfort. 😞 Working on your mindset requires consistency and dedication, not so much motivation. 😓 Motivation can only get you so far, but consistency on making small adjustments, practicing awareness, meditating, breathing, self growth, self discovery, stimulating new neural pathways, activity and connections. ⚡️ Over time these small steps and actions compound and your mindset begins to shift from… ⭕️I can’t - Im figuring it out! ⭕️I’m not good enough - I am enough as I am! ⭕️I always fail - I haven’t succeed YET! ⭕️This always happens to me - Oh I love solving problems when they arise. 🕺🏻 Start today and look at your life through a new lease, 👓 how can I reframe the things that have held me back, it’s the simplest place to start working on your mindset. Ever notice when you’re looking for something and you can’t see it even when it’s literally right in front of you? That’s because we’ve created a perceived image of what we’re looking for. If you thought the item was brown your mind and eyes are searching only for brown almost canceling or filtering out all other colours so, if the item was maybe blue, you wouldn’t see it even though it was in plain sight. The same is true in life. If you frame everything with anger, you’ll only see maddening things even if happiness is right in front of you. If you are looking for something suspicious you’ll only find suspicious behaviour. You might be surprised how many people come to therapy wanting to fix or change something about themselves that actually, is just fine, they’re just surrounded by the wrong people in the wrong environments. The thing is, you don’t have to fix or heal every aspect of who you are. If you like falling asleep to the tv, if you prefer staying up really late to get some sacred time to yourself, if you never want to drive a car, if you cannot stand loud noises and avoid concerts or other big events, that can be totally fine! If you genuinely want to change these things or anything like it, of course that can be explored and potentially worked through in therapy. But you need to know, you’re not wrong for having preferences like this or anything else you may have once been shamed for. People are diverse in nature. Yes as a whole we share a lot of common ground. But you are meant to be divergent in many ways. You are allowed to be divergent in many ways. You can even embrace it. What habit, attribute, or preference of yours have you long thought you need to change to be more like other people? Ask yourself if you really want to change it, or if you just feel you need to change it to fit more into society’s ideal? If the latter, can you bring some awareness to that thing this week and just notice if it’s possible to allow it to simply be? ‘𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙨’ Have you ever found yourself saying to someone “I’ll try to do it” e.g “ I’ll try make it to the gym tomorrow” Or “ I’ll try come with you on that hike” or “ I’ll try get the work done by tomorrow”. Generally speaking, it often feels like a tug-of-war within us — part of us wants to, and part of us doesn’t. That’s where the word “try” gives us an escape route. Next time change the phrase from “ I’ll try” to “I will”and watch the shift In your internal state. Your mind will start coming up ways on how you can do it. Reframe your word choices, and you’ll reframe your beliefs. For example, “ I am terrible at this” can be reframed to “ up till now, I have not been good at this” Or “ With enough practice, I will become good at this ” The words we use can be powerful.
