Exhale as you bring them back up. Modification: keep your hips on the floor. 2.)Staggered stance bridge -The leg closest to you is doing most of the work, and I’m holding the weight over that hip. Exhale as you lift your hips. Inhale as you lower it back down. Modification: perform a bridge with feet even 3.) Bridge hold + marches + dumbbell hold -Exhale as you lift your leg. Inhale as you lower it down. Modification: Perform with hips on the floor 4.)Reverse plank -Exhale as you lift your hips. Inhale as you lower them back down 5.)Bird dog hold + shoulder extension -Exhale as you lift your arm. Inhale as you lower it back down. Modification: keep both legs on the floor if needed. 📌 10-12 reps per exercise for 1-3 rounds. ❌Do not hold your breath when doing these. ✅Keep your core activated while performing each rep. If you need to stop and reset your core, do so. Form is the most important part of performing these. 📌 You should have minimal/no pelvic movement (rocking side to side) when your core is properly engaged. There is no “best” exercise for the treatment of sciatica. You might come across videos on YouTube that promise a quick fix and we think it’s amazing when people do find relief with those videos, but it’s important to set realistic expectations because although sciatica has a generally favorable time course, symptoms don’t always quickly resolve and for some people, actually become persistent or episodic. There are generally three camps of exercises: 1. Trunk strengthening exercises, oftentimes in reference to Stuart McGill’s big 3 - which are performed daily as isometric holds within tolerance. 2. Nerve glide variations that are prescribed with the intention of reducing the sensitivity of the nerve with different movements. 3. Repeated motions, or you might have heard this be called the McKenzie method. A simplified explanation is that you repeat movements in the direction that improves your symptoms. You might try bending forward 10 times and then bending backward 10 times. If bending forward worsens your symptoms and bending backward improves your symptoms, then you would try to take advantage of that. Periodically throughout the day, in standing or on your stomach, you might repeatedly extend your back for a short duration of time depending on how you respond. If it helps and your tolerance to extension improves, then you might increase the amount of repetitions or the range of motion over time. You can do the same thing if your symptoms are worse with extension and better with flexion. No single approach is going to work for everyone. And for that reason, one of the approaches, or a combination of the three, might work for anyone. However, it’s not necessarily due to the mechanisms that they propose such as improving core stability, un-trapping the nerve, or pushing the disc material back in. Remember, the goal of rehab is to improve your function and how you feel. It doesn’t need to be much more complicated than that. To learn more, click the link in our bio! 💥Tweak your low back?? - If you don’t need this post now you’ll wanna SAVE it for later! More than 80% of people will experience an episode of low back pain at some point in their life. - Whether you lifted too heavy with crappy form in the gym 🏋️‍♂️ or you were just trying to get a fork out of the dishwasher 🍴 and somehow managed to tweak your back, low back pain is NO FUN! 😫 - The best thing you can do is to KEEP MOVING as much as possible! “Resting” for 2 weeks is NOT the answer and will often make things worse!!🙅‍♂️ - Finding the right movements that don’t increase your pain is important. I always recommend seeing your Physical Therapist who can guide you and give you an individualized plan.👍 - Many times you will have a directional preference - meaning you might prefer lumbar flexion over extension or vice versa (bending forward vs bending backwards). - In general, getting some gentle motion in the ranges of motion that don’t increase your pain is the first step to getting back to normal.✅ - The following exercises are examples of some movements that can introduce some gentle movement and strengthening for your spine. - 1️⃣ Lower trunk rotations 2️⃣ Sciatic flossing 3️⃣ Piriformis stretch 4️⃣ Glute bridge Isometrics 5️⃣ Modified side plank 6️⃣ Prone hip IR/ER 7️⃣ Prone press ups 8️⃣ Cat cow 9️⃣ Prayer stretch + reach 🔟 Bird dog - If you need an individualized plan to help you out with your back, sciatica or any other injury/painful area ➡️ Tap the 🔗 at the top of my page @back_painfix Follow 👉@back_painfix for daily pain relief and mobility tips!📚 📢Find this helpful? There are numerous reasons why we develop chronic back pain and it is “fascinating” to to delve into the mechanisms behind it. I can afford to say that because mine has improved so much - still issues but 100 times better. Today I stumbled upon this YouTube channel that specifically adresses lower back pain while learning about fascia ( wow another rabbit hole).
