Diaphragmatic Breathing reduces overall stress and the stress hormone called cortisol. This simple method turns on our parasympathetic system which is our rest and relax state where your vital organs can return to the original relaxed state. Our sympathetic system is our stress system which inhibits rest, relaxation and healing. #diaphragmaticbreathing

With May being #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, the conversation at the Lymphedema Patient Roundtable focused on the intersections of mental, emotional, and physical health when living with #lymphedema. Both panelists and attendees spoke candidly about their experiences and shared different coping strategies, including how they reframe treatment time into moments of positive self-care. The conversation was a much-needed tonic for many in the chat: "I am feeling better as this discussion has gone on," wrote attendee Christine R. "I feel hopeful." Do you mouth breathe or nose breathe? Evidence shows breathing through the nose has increased health benefits….. - better oral health - improves oxygenation - improves sleep quality - filters and humidifies the air into the lungs - slows the breathing rate down - helps release nasal nitric oxide Try checking in with your breathing during different tasks and see how your breathing. Where from mouth or nose, where to upper chest, expansive breath or down your belly, is it fast or slow and controlled. Great way to do a little mindful moment for your body and your nervous system. #breathe #diaphragmaticbreathing #nosebreathing #mindfulness

Box Breathing (aka square breath or four-square breathing) is a research-backed technique for calming the nervous system, reducing stress, aiding sleep and even reducing key risk factors for chronic health problems, such as hypertension, inflammation, and cortisol (that's the stress hormone involved in other endocrine and neurotransmitter pathways in the body). How to do box breathing: 1. Breathe out slowly, releasing all the air from your lungs. 2. Breathe in through your nose as you slowly count to four in your head. ... 3. Hold your breath for a count of four. 4. Exhale for another count of four. 5. Hold your breath again for a count of four. 6. Repeat for three to four rounds. #boxbreathing #squarebreath #foursquarebreathing #diaphragmaticbreathing #breathingexercise #breathwork #mentalhealthawareness #mham #mentalhealth

"Your hippie voodoo shit REALLY works!!" This is what a dear friend once exclaimed to me after I pulled her out of a full-blown panic attack by guiding her back to her breath and into her body. 🪄 Breathing is one of the most important aspects of being alive. And yet, because our bodies naturally just do it, we often don't give it another thought. And that is where the problems begin... Did you know that many people suffer from shallow breathing? This is when the inhaled air remains trapped in the upper chest region, without being fully allowing to reach the abdomen. This pattern is often caused by stress, and inadvertently tends to perpetuate stress too. The more we do something, the more it becomes a habit - for better, or worse. Prolonged shallow breathing can take a toll on our bodies, brains, nervous systems, hearts, and lead to serious health problems. We live in a society where stress has not only become normalized, but actually encouraged! (And we wonder why symptoms, like anxiety, are so rampant.) 🤔 It's time to return to the drawing board and reevaluate our priorities. In the meantime, there are tons of conscious breathing practices that can help to reduce stress and retrain deep, "belly breathing" (the way babies do.) As both a Breathwork Facilitator and Kundalini Yoga Instructor, I work with an assortment of different breathing techniques with various purposes. The style of breathwork I practice and teach focuses on conscious, connected diaphragmatic breathing. It is an excellent modality to release energetic blockages, integrate stored trauma and help your body remember how to use its full lung capacity. When is the last time you naturally breathed DEEPLY and felt stress-free? Would you like some support in reclaiming this birthright? Let's chat in the DMs to discuss the best path for you. 💞 My next in-person, shared session is Sat., May 25th from 5:30 - 8:30pm at the @theyurtkw - a newer venue that is spectacular for this workshop!

Discover the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing! This deep breathing exercise engages your diaphragm and boosts lung efficiency. It’s especially helpful for those with COPD, asthma, high blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and more. Here's a step-by-step on how to perfect your belly breathing! 1. Lay on your back on a firm, comfortable surface with your knees bent. Also, you can sit comfortably in a chair with your shoulders, head and neck relaxed. 2. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly, below your ribs. Breathe in slowly through your nose. Picture your belly filling with air, from the bottom up. 3. Tighten your stomach muscles, letting them fall inward as you exhale through pursed lips. The hand on your upper chest must remain as still as possible. #BreathingExercises #Wellness #HealthTips #DiaphragmaticBreathing #bellybreathing

Did you know your teeth alignment can impact your balance and ability to move well because there is a direct connection between the jaw and pelvis? Our teeth provide vital sensory input for our bodies in space through proprioception. When they are misaligned as with malocclusion, it affects our breathing and consequently our pelvis. It also creates a forward head posture and tight neck musculature on one or both sides. If you have missing teeth or can’t bite equally on the back molars, you may be missing sense of that side of the body which will also affect your visual field. In order to restore the proprioceptive feedback you have to breathe correctly and fully into the back as well as into the belly. Visual field testing is also needed to improve sensory input equally and restore oscillatory movement to both sides (rotation). Patterns of torsion without treatment before having orthodontic correction like Invisalign, can keep the pattern stuck or even change what movement pattern there was before, making hips tighter, which is something I am seeing clinically! Have you noticed this in yourself? Let me know 👇🏾and get in touch if you need help🙏🏾 #osteopathy #osteopathicmedicine #cranialosteopathy #tmj #5diaphragms #posturecorrection #postural #jawpelvisconnection #tongueposture #beactivated #clenching #malocclusion #sleepapnea #diaphragmaticbreathing #painscience #invisalign #tbi #concussion #whiplash

Fatigue is the most common side effect we experience when undergoing (and have gone through) treatment for breast cancer 🥱 So how can we kick it to the curb and find our energy again? By breathing properly! 🫁 Many of us are chest breathers and after having chemotherapy, maybe some radiation and surgery will only intensify this. Our bodies aren't getting enough oxygen to fuel our cells! Tapping into diaphragmatic breathing has been shown to boost energy levels and activate relaxation ☺️ Focus on your posture! When I say this, I don't mean shove your shoulders back and stick your chest out. Proper alignment for efficient breathing, means your ribs are stacked on top of your hips🧍‍♀️ For some individuals (such as those with excessive upper back rounding), the ribs may not align directly over the hips in a stacked position. In such cases, corrective exercises and postural adjustments tailored to the individual's needs would help unlock a new world of breathing! Sync your breath 🌬️ with exercises for optimal energy flow and efficiency. For example, inhaling during the prep phase and exhaling during the exertion creates a rhythmic pattern that boosts oxygen uptake, activates muscles, and eases fatigue and tension! 💪 Take charge of your well-being with these simple yet effective techniques. If you're interested in learning more, comment BREATH below! 👇️

DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING TECHNIQUE • Find a comfortable, relaxed position. You can sit or lie down. • Place one hand on your chest and the other hand on your belly, just below your ribcage. • Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, focusing on expanding your belly as you breathe in. Feel your belly rise and your hand move outward. • Exhale slowly, allowing your belly to deflate and your hand to move inwards. • Continue this slow, deep breathing, focusing on the movement of your diaphragm and keeping your chest relatively still. Practicing this technique improves your respiratory function, reduces stress and promotes relaxation and balance in your life. #diaphragmaticbreathing #breathing #diaphragm #diagraphmhealth #breathedeep #abdominalbreathing #bellybreathing #mindfulbreathing #lunghealth #relaxation #stressrelief #breathingexercises #deepbreathing #holistichealth #holistichealing #safehealinghands

Let your booty go and your pelvic floor muscles will thank you 🫶 Diaphragmatic breathing🧘‍♀️helps to increase oxygenation of tissues, decrease muscle tension (the pelvic floor muscles should relax with every inhale), down regulate/calm down the central nervous system, and passively stretch the pelvic floor muscles. Breathe in and allow 360-degree ribcage expansion, with the belly rising slightly, the ribs moving laterally, and the chest remaining steady. You might feel your anu$ dropping towards your feet. Have you seen @dr.skylerj ‘s @birthco.chiro breathe through your butthole shirt? 🤩 #pelvicfloor #breathe #diaphragmaticbreathing #pelvicpain #chronicpain #prolapse #incontinence #diastasisrecti #austinmom #atxmoms

This routine will target your deep core stabilizers and pelvic floor to help snatch your waist and heal a diastasis. Follow 👉@backpainadvisor for daily pain relief tips! 📚 Follow 👉@backpainadvisor for daily pain relief tips! 📚 ⭐️ I’m holding a weight for this routine today, but it can absolutely be done without it to make it easier. 1.)Bridge hold + arm lift +opposite leg lift -Inhale as you lower arm and leg. Exhale as you bring them back up. Modification: keep your hips on the floor. 2.)Staggered stance bridge -The leg closest to you is doing most of the work, and I’m holding the weight over that hip. Exhale as you lift your hips. Inhale as you lower it back down. Modification: perform a bridge with feet even 3.) Bridge hold + marches + dumbbell hold -Exhale as you lift your leg. Inhale as you lower it down. Modification: Perform with hips on the floor 4.)Reverse plank -Exhale as you lift your hips. Inhale as you lower them back down 5.)Bird dog hold + shoulder extension -Exhale as you lift your arm. Inhale as you lower it back down. Modification: keep both legs on the floor if needed. 📌 10-12 reps per exercise for 1-3 rounds. ❌Do not hold your breath when doing these. ✅Keep your core activated while performing each rep. If you need to stop and reset your core, do so. Form is the most important part of performing these. 📌 You should have minimal/no pelvic movement (rocking side to side) when your core is properly engaged. There is a pinned reel on my page showing how to engage your core. . There are some really fun exercises you can do to move and sync up the jaw and pelvis in preparation for spinal movement. In my experience it's a great way to feel loser and more aware of the spine. In the third week of our human development, the embyro forms two depressions which eventually creates the mouth (oropharyngeal membrane) and openings at the pelvic outlet (cloacal membrane). What grows between the two is our spinal cord, encased in it's fascial membrane the dural tube. Moving the jaw and pelvis might be modulating the proprioceptive feedback at the spine, improving our capacity to move freely. Either way, it's an approach I use a lot for pelvic floor clients and it can create a very calming experience. Movement is integrated. Movement is medicine Tom

Nasal Breathing Improves Hormone Efficiency Nasal breathing isn't just about taking in air; it's about unlocking the potential for optimal hormone efficiency within our bodies. As I've explored the science behind nasal breathing, I've come to appreciate its profound impact on our hormonal balance. When we breathe through our noses, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, signaling to our bodies that it's time to rest and digest. This triggers a series of physiological responses, including the regulation of hormones throughout the body. One hormone particularly affected by nasal breathing is cortisol, often known as the "stress hormone." Nasal breathing helps to maintain cortisol levels within a healthy range, preventing spikes that can lead to feelings of anxiety and stress. By keeping cortisol in check, we can better manage our stress response and promote overall well-being. But the benefits of nasal breathing don't stop there. It also influences the production and utilization of other key hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, and oxytocin. These hormones play crucial roles in various bodily functions, including mood regulation, metabolism, and reproductive health. By optimizing hormone efficiency through nasal breathing, we can support our body's natural processes and enhance our overall vitality. So whether you're looking to reduce stress, improve mood, or simply boost your overall health, incorporating nasal breathing into your daily routine is a simple yet powerful tool to consider. By harnessing the incredible benefits of nasal breathing, we can take proactive steps towards achieving optimal hormonal balance and reaching new heights of health and well-being. So, whether you're looking to reduce stress, improve mood, or enhance overall health, incorporating nasal breathing into your daily routine is a simple yet powerful tool to consider. Let's harness the incredible benefits of nasal breathing together and take our health to new heights! #health #healing #progressivebreathing #wellness #wellbeing #coaching #nasalbreathing #diaphragmaticbreathing #cognitivefitness #oxytocin #hormoneregulation

A lot of the time we look at our bodies through a reductionist lens; separating the different parts of the body and focusing healing in one area. Our bodies are designed to work as one interconnected system, flowing in harmony. This is where the diaphragms come in. We have many diaphragms within the body. The main diaphragms are the respiratory, pelvic and laryngeal. They are designed to move freely with the breath in an involuntary way. The way to access this involuntary response is through the breath and spinal alignment. When in balance the diaphragms have an incredible effect on human health and movement. If out of balance, the body’s self regulating powers are disturbed and our health and wellbeing will be affected. If we learn how to work and release the diaphragms, we have a powerful healing tool for the mind and body. Hypopressive breathwork is an amazing tool for releasing and strengthening these connections and healing the body in a holistic way 💛 If you’d like to find out more about hypoppressives please get in touch ☀️ #hypopressives #hypopressivebreathing #diaphragmaticbreathing #diaphram #corehealth #holistichealing #breathwork

Now factor in the fact that breath is life. Now factor in the fact that we were never properly taught how to breathe. Thorax breathing (upper body/chest/lungs) as opposed to diaphragm breathing (lower body/diaphragm/stomach) was how we were taught, so we take short breathes as opposed to deep, concentrated intentional breathing that renews the oxygen in our blood and helps settle our nerves. Why you think the blood pressure so high and we lead in respiratory issues? Compound that with the issue of jab shedding and we have a problem that needs to be addressed. Later today I will do a LIVE demonstrating the proper and operable way to breathe to induce a walking theta state. You can literally be LUCID Living with the proper breathing regimen. Laughter is good for the soul, plus it’s perfect exercise for the diaphragm which is our primary breathing muscle 🫁 Laughter is high frequency food for this chaotic and exhilarating ride we call life. It can silence the Ego in a flash. Expanding the heart and boost our love of living. I’m a big advocate of laughter it’s important to find humour in being Human, healing trauma can be a serious business and the nervous system needs laughter, to self regulate. The vagus nerve is the largest nerve in our body and originates in the brain. It goes down to the neck and torso where it is responsible for many of our day to day actions- Swallowing food, digesting food, gut peristalsis, breath control, controlling your heart rate, managing stress, etc.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ To maintain optimal health, we have to make sure our vagal tone is strong. The first and most EFFECTIVE way you can positively affect your vagus nerve is to learn to breathe correctly.⁣ ⁣ Diaphragmic breathing (deep belly breathing) is what you want to practice. Get yourself a vibration plate, there about £100 on Amazon and try doing this at home - see the difference 🥰 “The ONLY way you are going to clear the fluid from your lower body (belly button and below) is with diaphragmatic breathing (belly breathing.) Belly breathing is kinda like creating a suction pump, pulling that fluid all the way up to your termini. When we don’t breath properly it makes it really, really hard for the fluid in your lower half to drain. This is especially true if you have lipedema or lymphedema which add additional hurdles for drainage. If you are someone that has fluid in your legs, ankles, knees, lipedema, lymphedema or anything else associated with congested lower lymphatic system…. Please look at how you are breathing. That could be what’s causing you to struggle with draining that part of your body. Also don’t forget to open up your specific 7 lymph nodes before getting on the vibration plate 😉” Posted @withregram • @doc.talks.detox #happydraining #lymphdrainage #lymphaticdrainage #lymphnodes #lymphedema #lipedema #swollenankles #swollenlegs #swollenknees #fluidretention #diaphragmaticbreathing #bellybreathing #theskinangel #liquidlipo @liquidlipoltd

Day three of the incredible ‘From Trauma to Trust’ myofascial energetic release training with the awesome soul brother who is @nisarga8 - it’s all about the fascia!!! I’m humbled once again to learn from experts, and to witness and appreciate integrity and safety in practice. None of us can be expert in everything, and all of us can benefit from being humble enough to acknowledge a beginners mindset on a regular basis. Some of you know by now that it’s a particular bug bear of mine that we are seeing a rise of poorly trained facilitators without specific knowledge of breathwork, bodywork, ethics trauma and consent. I see how attractive it is to jump on the bandwagon of high-level catharsis, to ignore the wisdom of the body, or to think that a cathartic experience is a healing one, which whilst I agree on occasion it can be, as a habitual part of the practice it most certainly isn’t. We have to learn how to listen to these bodies when for so many of us they have been unsafe, or we just don’t know the stories the body holds. You can’t think your way into feeling and you can easily get lost in it too (story) so let’s keep respecting these beautiful bodies and this beautiful work. Do you practice self-attunement with the felt sense or is this new to you?

Due to our unstable nature (humans aren't structurally stable like a pyramid) we use movement to stabilise. This means joints need to modulate in their levels of stiffness so bones can rotate in different directions and counter the forces they're experiencing above and below. "Feeling balanced" isn't a static affair, it's a dynamic dance between mobility and stiffness. Movement is medicine Tom

Got TMJ issues? The TMJ is a joint that is commonly impacted by stress through nervous system activation. There can be emotional tension held in the jaw when there is a need to hold back emotion from suffering that would be too painful to allow. The Trigeminal nuclei have connections to the sympathetic nervous system where chronic tension from chronic stress will be physiologically reflected in the TMJ. When the nervous system is stressed or dysregulated, it responds as a whole-tight jaw, raised shoulders, upper chest and neck breathing and tight pelvis with restricted fluid flow. For Mental Awareness, I will be posting more about the TMJ, so stay tuned and share with anyone who you think can benefit 🙏🏾💕 #sympatheticnervoussystem #chronicstress #nervoussystemregulation #chronicpainwarrior #chronicdisease #tmjdisorder #tmjtreatment #diaphragmaticbreathing #stressreduction #mentalhealthmonth #mentalhealthawarenessweek #parasympatheticnervoussystem #osteopathy #manualtherapy #tmd #painscience #sleepapnea

What are you reading at the moment? I’ve been doing some Buteyko Breathing as part of my Myofunctional Therapy, and got some really unexpected health and singing results from it. This has led to me using the concepts with some of my vocal coaching clients which has been equally fascinating. When it comes to breathing for singing, many of us struggle with it not because of our singing technique but because of our breathing habits in the rest of our lives. If this is something that interests you, I definitely recommend this book. It even has a chapter about singing towards the end.
