So amazing to welcome @albywalters home this week! Alby has just completed an incredible 1200mile ultra marathon from Rome back to Paignton in Devon in just 26 days ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง ๐Ÿ˜ฏ All to raise funds for brilliant local charity PHAB Torbay ๐Ÿ™ An absolute pleasure see Alby in the @personal_best_therapy clinic at @winners2000fitness yesterday for some massage work to help soothe a few of those aches and pains and to talk through recovery strategies ๐Ÿ’ญ One of the many major challenges of this adventure was how to take on board sufficient calories for the sheer volume and amount of hours each day that Alby was runningโ€ฆ especially during large sections of rural France where he was running solo with very sporadic access to towns, shops or anywhere to refuel himself. I am really looking forward to delivering a presentation at the Association of Breast Surgery conference next week. Getting updates into medical forums on the benefit of scar massage is something I have been working hard at since specialising in this area of soft tissue therapy. I remember my first conference presentation where I was invited by @sportsmassageassociation back in 2017 to talk to their members, that felt like a huge breakthrough and a fantastic opportunity. Coming back from a running injury is a process. While a little rest may be necessary at first (usually not for the most common running injuries), it should look similar to your normal strength, mobility, and warm up routine. No one likes a running injury, but statistically speaking, you will have one. Run long enough and you will have many. While strength training alone will not prevent injury, it will make you more resilient to stress and will likely help you return to running more quickly after a set back. "Determined, but a bit shit" @natashakilpatrick got it spot on with this description of my ultrarunning efforts ๐Ÿ˜‚ Without realising it she has summed up the basis of my next running related goal! I am now less than 10 weeks out from Hope and ๐Ÿคž my first 100 miler. And I've already started asking "what's next?" That's how my brain works with running, I always seem to have a new goal in mind. And this is it ๐Ÿ‘‡ I am a shit ultra runner. It's true. I can endure long enough that I survive and get my medals. But surviving isn't quite enough for me, I want to start thriving. Now don't get me wrong, I'm never going to be troubling the podium. I'm not built for that, I'm way too heavy footed ๐Ÿฆ But I do want to start getting to the end of an ultra distance feeling proud of my performance. I've achieved that with 5km 10km 10 miles Half marathon 20 miles But beyond that ๐Ÿ˜ต So next up I'm going to pick one distance and focus on it for a whole year until I feel like I'm happy and ready to move on. Starting with 50km! The goal is to record a sub 6 hour 50km before the end of 2025. Considering I've not yet broke the 7 hour barrier, that may be a big ask. But what's the point in setting a goal if there is not a very real chance I could fail it? After 50km, I'll set a target for 50 miles, Then 100km, Then..... 100 miles..... 9 and a bit weeks to go until my first attempt at 100 miles ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Here is what the next 9 weeks look like... - This week is going to be a light restful week, I need to make sure I'm fighting fit for the intense training to come... - After this week I'll have an intense 6 week training block, big focus on hills, maintaining some pace, trails, and at least 1 big mileage day. - Then I'll have 2 and a bit weeks to taper, dropping the mileage, eating all the carbs, and loads of stretching and massage. My massage style is intuitive. What does that mean? Basically I listen to my clientโ€™s body. Sometimes the kneading the muscles does the trick, plus it feels good. I have found in my years of body work that every one responds differently to massage techniques. As a physical therapist I learned many soft tissue modalities that easily fit into a massage. My biggest advice to a client is to communicate what you need or what problem or injury area needs attention. Then I can zone in to work with your body. Sometimes a general massage is all you need/want and that can be equally powerful. After Tuesday's little blip I decided to take it easy today. The plan was to just do 10km with a running friend who is coming back from injury. However, I got to 10km and realised I had more to give so decided to push the pace for another 6km to see if I could get a decent paced 10 miles in. Considering we were chatting on the 10km and I had loads of annoying road crossing stops, I am really happy with this 10 mile effort!! I have spent the past 2 days really focusing on my recovery after Tuesday, loads of protein, stretching, self massage, resting, and a decent amount of fruit and veg. How the mighty have fallen! Last week's hill session was awesome, I felt like Joss Naylor in his prime, gracefully ascending steep climbs like they're nothing but speed bumps! Today I felt less like Joss Naylor and more like Gemma Collins ๐Ÿ˜‚ No offence to Gemma, I just can't picture her flying up a hill. From the first step I knew this was going to be a poor run, my legs are carrying a lot of fatigue and I felt really slow and sluggish. I know why! 1) my nutrition has been shocking over the last couple of weeks and it's definitely caught up with me. 2) I was supposed to have a rest week when I went to Nice but instead ran up a mountain, ran to the airport with all my kit, and ran/walked nearly 50k steps on the day I got back. I'm going to make a big effort on sorting out my nutrition and I'm going to have my rest week next week. My first day as a PT in a gym was pretty embarrassing ๐Ÿ˜ณ I was working out of a gym in Southampton. Part of the agreement I had was that I would offer every single member a free PT session, During that session I would answer questions, teach some cool exercises, and give an insight into what I was like to work with as a PT. On day one a new member agreed to have a free session. In fact she was free later that day so I booked her in to see me that afternoon. I was incredibly nervous, like full on ๐Ÿ’ฉing myself! I spent ages perfecting a sales script and the workout I was going to take her through. I wanted the workout to be challenging and fun, and one of my favourite ways to make a workout fun back then was to slam sandbags on to the floor (it's awesome ๐Ÿ‘Œ) However, when we started the workout all the sandbags were being used. "not to worry" I thought "I spotted a slam ball over there" So I grabbed what I thought was a slam ball, Threw it on to the floor at full pelt, And it bounced back up and twatted me in the face ๐Ÿ˜‚ Turns out it was actually very bouncy medicine ball! Just as I was considering running out and finding somewhere to curl up and die of embarrassment, I somehow pulled a joke out of my arse... "And that's clearly how NOT to do it" I said She started laughing. She signed up, and was a client from 2018 until 2022 when I shut down the PT business so I could move to Dorchester! What's the moral of the story? 1) Don't put your face too close to medicine balls. 2) Don't let your quest for perfection stop you in your tracks.... After this incident I weirdly relaxed and forgot about the script and just spoke to her as a human being rather than someone I was desperate to sign up. I took that same approach into every free session that I did after that and had a pretty successful gym based PT business until Covid came along. I genuinely believe that if the session had gone perfectly (or what I had deemed to be perfect) that she would not have joined me because I'd have been acting like a robot, not a human being. On another note... Look how good my arms were in 2018 ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ช
