Going to the doctor for checkups can be a tough thing for kids, but with a little planning we can make it fun. I mean it, fun. We had physicals yesterday for all of our kids, and our middle one said today “I love going to the doctor!” Here’s todays hack: once you’re in the room, get the wiggles out! Turn off the light, and play some dance music on your phone! Our favorites include the Party Freeze Song, Shake your Silkies out, Banaphone (by Raffi, the legend), and Run Baby Run (by Caspar Babypants). Level this hack up by investing a few dollars in glow sticks or a keychain or mini light show. One is linked in this post. Some moments do get a little easier. Christian had a check up with the Orthodontist today. He needed another one of those fancy X-rays with the fancy machine to show how his teeth were progressing. He stepped right up and even got to push the buttons to get the right height situated. He was a pro! Teeth are coming along and bone graph results looked amazing! The first time he had one done many years ago wasn’t as smooth and took some convincing. I wish I had known then that some moments do get a little easier. Today's live session with Kendra Wilde of @alittleeasier podcast and @wildpeace for parents was really powerful. I received a flurry of messages after the call from women saying how it was just what they needed to hear today. As moms we have a lot on our plates and often don't give ourselves credit for how much we pour into our families nor do we give ourselves grace when things don't go as planned. This conversation was where reality, grace and support meet. There are so many nuggets of wisdom in this conversation from the neuroscience around what burnout really is to the many micro-actions that can help regulate our nervous systems and get us off the perpetual hamster wheel of stress. Little shifts can be added to your daily routine that don't require a yoga practice or a masseuse. Think about "stapling" something to a ritual you already do like while you make your coffee or on your commute home. Pay attention to transitions -- sometimes resetting your breath and your mindset before going into mom-mode can help the overwhelm. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as we did. So many kids are struggling right now. I thought this clip from Episode 11 would resonate with all the parents and caregivers in the background who are trying their best to help. ⁠ ⁠ Randi's son struggled with mental illness and suicidal ideation when he was just 9 years old. Her experience informed her mission in life, which was to shine more light on mental health and offer parents more support. She made a film about her story called No Letting Go, and founded a nonprofit, @ymhproject ⁠ ⁠ While we may not all decide to take advocacy to this level, her story is incredibly inspiring!⁠ ⁠ You can meet Randi Silverman in more than one episode of A Little Easier. As the summer holidays are drawing closer to the end and many parents are managing the juggle between school holidays and work, the boredom and lack of structure and routine starts to really show up at this point in the holidays and with it some anger, frustration and upset. When we don’t take it personally, it’s much easier to respond neutrally and effectively. I had the distinct honor and pleasure of sitting down (virtually) at Phillip Cowan & Carolyn Pape Cowan's kitchen table to discuss what they have learned in their 4+ decade career about the importance of co-parenting relationships and the role of fathers.⁠ ⁠ This dynamic duo (both PhD's in psychology) co-directed and trained facilitators in three longitudinal intervention studies with partners who are parents, all guided by a family systems model, to support positive cognitive, social, and emotional outcomes for children. There was so much wisdom to tap into. I barely scratched the surface...⁠ ⁠ Phil noted how often parenting advice is aimed at mothers alone. But his research and experience have shown that #dadsmatter too! He's referring to a concept that Lisa Feldman Barrett introduces in her book, How Emotions Are Made. She uses the term Body Budget to describe how the brain budgets the energy in your body to keep you alive and well. Maintaining a balanced body budget is important for regulating our emotions and our overall sense of well-being.⁠ ⁠ Don't forget to make some deposits to keep your Body Budget from shriveling. Parenting can bring up the most intense feelings. You can find yourself bursting with love and amazement, burning with rage or resentment, trembling with worry or sorrow -- and everything in between. Sometimes (often) it's a messy mix. ⁠ ⁠ Instead of offering ourselves compassion, we tend to beat ourselves up for losing our cool, handling things the "wrong" way, or not doing enough. We compare ourselves to other parents who seem to have it all together... as if we're the only one who doesn't.⁠ ⁠ Here's a way to go grow the inner strength to face these storms with more calm and confidence. The acronym "RAIN" is a helpful tool for incorporating mindfulness and compassion into your life. With practice, it can expand your ability to face challenging feelings without getting swept away.⁠ ⁠ Here are the four steps:⁠ ⁠ R. Recognize what is happening;⁠ A. Allow the experience to be there, just as it is;⁠ I. Investigate with interest and care;⁠ N.
