Let's talk about shin splints today! Shin splints, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), are a common running injury in all athletes and actually account for about 15% of all running injuries. Usually they are symptoms of another underlying problem such as over-pronation of your feet when you run. 💥Causes of Shin Splints -Overpronation while running. This happens when the foot rolls inward which causes the shin muscles to stretch and increases the stress on them which increases the risk of running injury. -Over-eagerness and taking on too much running too soon is a huge risk factor. This means that beginners need to be especially aware of the running loads that they take on themselves. -Experienced runners who run down hill are also at a risk as downhill running places added stress on the Tibialis Anterior. Symptoms Where do you feel the pain? Front and Middle Side of Lower Leg: If you are experiencing pain and soreness in the front and middle (medial) side of your lower leg then you are more than likely undergoing a shin splint which can feel like a tooth-ache pain, sharp or dull. Back of the leg: Pain in the back of the leg usually indicates problems that are coming from you posterior lower leg muscles, especially from your Achilles tendon and could be a case of Achilles tendonitis and not a shin splint. As your Tibialis Anterior receives the shock while you run the membrane which attaches to your tibia bone can start to pull away from the bone and pain results. Middle Deep Area of the Shin Bone: Pain in the Tibialis Anterior, which usually comes from over-pronation is felt in the front, middle, deep part of the shin. When you can’t run - but you can still get up and get your steps in. Today was supposed to be long run day for me but I’m being sensible and resting my strained quad (and now my knee has decided to kick off 🫠) I find resting REALLY hard, especially when it’s enforced. I worry I’m detraining and I become hyper aware of how much I rely on running to destress. Thank god for fresh air and friends who will walk and talk with you! So, trying to focus on what I can do, rather than what I can’t AND planning on learning some more about sports psychology and specific training to help my body perform the best it can. Correct marathon nutrition is critical for optimal performance and training. As you begin to increase your weekly mileage and your long runs you will also need to become more aware of what food you are taking in. The more you run, the more energy you expend and the more you need to take in the right fuel/energy sources. ⚡Your Nutrition Goal as a Marathoner: Your goal is not to lose weight but to be nutritious and take in the right food (fuel) that is need in order to utilize it for energy that will make you capable of running long distances! The key is in eating a balanced diet! Eating well while training for a marathon does not mean that you need to start strictly counting calories or carbs. It means eating when you are hungry and eating to build your energy reserves. How many calories do you need as a marathoner? On average, the typical person burns between 2,200 calories/day (female) and 2,800 calories/day (male) depending on activity level. In order for you to just sustain basic physiological function you have what is called your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Now if you multiply your BMR with an activity factor you can figure out how many calories a day you need to sustain your lifestyle.
