#StefPenney #TheBeastsOfParis #HannahKent #Devotion #HiatoricalFiction #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #kirjagram #booksofinsta

LADY TAN’S CIRCLE OF WOMEN Lisa See 4/5⭐️ Review Recommended Age: 16+ Lisa See writes Chinese historical fiction so well. You can picture the historical moments she is depicting so perfectly because of her words. Tan’s strength and knowledge was so admirable and fascinating. I loved learning about Chinese midwifery and medicinal processes. The more in-depth view into the Chinese family in the 1500’s was a little frustrating. I was really bothered by the frequent talk of concubines and their role in Chinese households, foot binding and overall patriarchy. This has nothing to do with See’s writing, only my personal hatred for that aspect of history. Those parts always got me grumpy for a few pages. That is the yin and yang of reading historical books. We learn from our histories and can find pride in our histories but we can also be angered and ashamed of our history. I recommend all of See’s historical fiction based a real women from the past. #ladytanscircleofwomen #lisasee #hiatoricalfiction #chineseculture #novel #novels #chinesehistory #historicalnovel According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient. From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing, alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud, no lotus, they tell themselves: from adversity beauty can bloom.

I’ll try and fix that over the next few days hopefully after tomorrow I’m a little less pre-occupied. As far as reading goes it’s been an ok month so far, I DNF’d Alien Clay, finished Stones of Light and Sistah Samurai. By the time I’ve posted this I should have hopefully finished War of the Wolf. I’ve got two more books planned for this month, let’s see if I can get though them both before January ends. - qotd: How is your January going? - 17 January, 2024 - #bookstagram #bookmap #thelastkingdom #bernardcornwell #hiatoricalfiction #vikings #hardbackbooks #map

Saharan Queen just got a huge surge! I love this character so much - a real life desert warrior who united her people and held an entire Arabic army at bay for a decade and more. Emperor Marcus Aurelius. In my new novel, I try to explore his philosophical, stoic side that we all know. Thursdays are for Throwbacks! "like all fairy tales, theirs was filled with thickets and dark places and broken dreams, and runaway girls" Do you ever finish a book and right away you wish you could read it for the first time again?  That was The Great Alone for me.  A story of bravery and resillience and survival in the face of unimaginable pain.  This book was my introduction to @kristinhannahauthor magic and I was completely consumed. Truthfully, my book rating scale is so stupidly simple.  The litmus test is....did the story make me feel something? And gosh did this book make me feeeeeeel.  Love, hate, anger, fear, hope.  I felt it all! Hannah has a knack for writing these fierce and compelling female characters.  The only thing more captivating then Leni is the other main character in this book, Alaska.  The detailed descriptions of the brutal and beautiful landscape had me completely immersed and also adding the Alaskan frontier to my bucket list!  . . . 🪟A Gentleman in Moscow 🪟 Exquisite. This is the best word to describe @amortowles' novel about Count Alexander Rostov, an unrepentant aristocrat who is placed under house arrest by a Bolshevik tribunal in 1922. The Count's residence is the Hotel Metropol in central Moscow, but he is moved from his luxury suite to an attic room to begin his incarceration. It took me a good hundred pages to get into this but I am so glad I persevered. I started to feel like I was meeting up with a friend each time I picked the novel up. And the writing! It is beautiful, witty and original. The Count is indeed a gentleman, one of literature's finest - he's right up there with dear old Atticus Finch! And that's high praise indeed. The Count enters house arrest without bitterness or rage, and so as his material life becomes narrower, he begins to live a life much fuller and enriching than anyone could have imagined. Over the next thirty years, he makes friends with hotel staff, a precocious nine year old who wants to learn how to be a princess, a beautiful actress and then unexpectedly becomes an adoptive father to Sophia, who reveals the tenderness of the Count's heart. The ending took me by surprise - but, thankfully, in a good way. I will definitely reread this as I know I missed a lot because often I was reading it last thing at night when my brain had stopped fully functioning! And also because it is always a joy to be reunited with old friends. #agentlemaninmoscow #amortowles #hiatoricalfiction #literaryfiction #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookstagrammer

Rate: 🤩🤩🤩🤩 Reading this story was like reading certain aspects of my life happening to other people. As I can relate to the hurt and the pain of seeing changes happening to your neighborhood and not fully feeling accepted by people in your life. Xochitl did a great job expressing those things through each character from Olga to her mother Blanca. Olga's life as a Puerto Rican woman in and from Brooklyn is a story that takes you through all the emotions from seeing her grow into a woman, she needed to be but also sometimes falling back to the child she hasn't healed from. There is a touching point of reminiscence and loss that embarked on feelings I thought I healed from. The truth and fiction parts of the struggles of Puerto Ricans on the island were both obvious yet ignorant to others. To read all sides from capitalist to radicals and the reasoning for them all is what makes the book worthwhile. The way I went through not understanding her mom to seeing why she did what she did but still being mad is true work of a great writer. I loved this book and probably will most definitely read it again. . . . . . . . #bookstagram #olgadiesdreaming #xochitlgonzalez #books #reading #read #latinxreads #afrolatinxreads #fiction #hiatoricalfiction #bookreview #bookreviewer

A little bit late, but happy International Women's Day! 💜 🏺Book Review🏺 The Women of Troy by Pat Barker PerFiction_ist Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is the sequel to The Silence of the Girls, which was possibly my favourite read of 2021. I read this one late in December and just haven't gotten around to reviewing it. It picks up right where we left off in the previous book, Troy has fallen and the great armies of the Greeks are preparing to return home after the gruelling 10 year Trojan War. However, they are prevented from boarding their ships and setting sail by some very inclement weather. I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5, like I did for The Silence of Girls, because even though it was very good, it didn't pack the same punch for me. It might have been because I'm more familiar with Pat Barker's style now, whereas the unexpectedness of her writing knocked me out the first time around. But it may also have been because in this one we are not experiencing Brises' abuse and trauma firsthand. Here, Brises takes on the role of mentor to the younger women experiencing that same abuse and trauma. I highly admire Pat Barker as one of the best female authors in the world, and I applaude her for giving a voice to women who have been silenced for thousands of years. #thewomenoftroy #patbarker #womensday2022 #womensupportingwomen #bookstagram #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookrecs #bookseriesrecommendations #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bookcollector #bookaesthetic #bookaddiction #bookaddict #bookphotography #bookphoto #bookish #bookishphotography #bookishlife #fortheloveofbooks #fortheloveofreading #readersofinsta #troy #historicalfic #hiatoricalfiction #books #readingislife #booksaremylife

👑Book Review👑 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒈'𝒔 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 - Phillipa Gregory PerFiction_ist Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I have adored Phillipa Gregory's books for many years and I've waited a long time for an affordable copy of The King's Curse, and it was so worth the wait. What I love about Phillipa's books is that they often overlap, but are always told from the point of view of a different character. This allows the reader to experience the narrative from different angles and perspectives, truly breathing new life into history. The timeline in this book is similar to that of The Constant Princess, which is told from the perspective of Katherine of Aragon. However, here we are privy to the inner workings, fear and scheming of the struggle for survival of the last Plantagenates. Henry VIII is a fascinating character and I really enjoyed this closer look into what his personality and psychology might have been like. #bookreview #bookrecs #bookseriesrecommendations #goodbooks #phillipagregory #historicalfic #hiatoricalfiction #tudorcourt #waroftheroses #sareads #sareaders #sabookstagram #bookstagramsouthafrica #sabookstagrammers #bookstagram #bookcommunity #bookish #bookishphotography #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bookcollector #bookaesthetic #bookaddiction #bookphotography #flatlay #royalty #fortheloveofbooks #englishhistory #history

George Orwell's first novel, inspired by his own experiences in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, Burmese Days includes a new introduction by Emma Larkin in this edition of the Penguin Modern Classics. Based on his experiences as a policeman in Burma, George Orwell's first novel presents a devastating picture of British colonial rule. It describes corruption and imperial bigotry in a society where, 'after all, natives were natives - interesting, no doubt, but finally ... an inferior people'. When Flory, a white timber merchant, befriends Indian Dr Veraswami, he defies this orthodoxy. The doctor is in danger: U Po Kyin, a corrupt magistrate, is plotting his downfall. The only thing that can save him is membership of the all-white Club, and Flory can help. Flory's life is changed further by the arrival of beautiful Elizabeth Lackersteen from Paris, who offers an escape from loneliness and the 'lie' of colonial life. #georgeorwell #hiatoricalfiction #modernclassics #colonialrule #britishraj #bookstogift #buybooksfromabookshop

📖BOOK TOUR📖 In this historical fiction novel full of suspense, adventure, and love, a British nurse in WWI Egypt races to deliver intelligence that could change the course of the war. As a historical fiction lover, I was excited to read a story set in 1917 Palestine during WWI focussing on the British presence during the British Gaza Campaign. So much is set during WWII that it was refreshing to read and learn about a new place and time. Windswept features a strong, intelligent heroine, fast paced adventure, and a steamy romance. The story follows a brave nurse named Ginger, who flees her pampered upbringing to help those in need on the battlefield. Her compassion leads her to help anyone, no matter their allegiance. When she helps a wounded man hiding in her camp, it plunges her into a new role as the soldier shares his coded messages with her and informs her there is a spy amongst them. But who can she trust with this information? From there, the story turns as she enters a world of espionage, betrayal and murder. Windswept explores the impact of the war and British colonialism in this region. I loved learning about the history, spies and politics of the time. The book is fast paced and interesting and blends multiple genres into one. Several steamy scenes may keep some readers away and the book feels a tad long. But overall a very enjoyable book. This is actually the first in a series, so more to come. This was just released on September 21, 2021. Thanks @katerockbooktours for sending this my way! I'm thinking about sharing about what I've been reading on Saturdays. . So here we go: . 📖 What I'm currently reading: . The Push by Ashley Audrain . A psychological novel about a woman who struggles after giving birth to connect with her daughter. Is there something wrong with her? Her daughter? The writing is immersive and the chapters are short. Something my brain likes, but this might be a slow read for me as the subject does hit a little close to home. . 📚 What I finished reading: . The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner . Mixing historical fiction and a little bit of modern mystery we experience the stories of three women, an apothecary specializing in poisons, her young assistant, and a modern woman who stumbles upon their story. This was the perfect book to get me back into reading after a major slump. Basically a beach read for the dark academia crowd. 🤣 . #book #bookstagram #thepush #ashleyaudrain #thelostapothecary #sarahpenner #reading #hiatoricalfiction #bookrecommendations #booklover #booknerd #darkacademia #readersofinstagram #fallreads

🦋Book Review🦋 The Longest March - Fred Khumalo PerFiction_ist Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 First of all, how gorgeous is this cover?? I'm in love with it! Secondly, this was an incredibly interesting book for me. I have read very little about South African history and the little that I have read was from the white perspective. So this book, set in 1899, told from the perspective of the oppressed was such an eye-opening experience. It was amazing to read about the city of Johannesburg, that great teeming city, as a smaller place, filled out horse-drawn carriages. I also enjoyed getting a closer look at the roots of Zulu culture and life. There is a lot of sadness in this book, from the childhood trauma Nduku experienced to the intense discrimination that permeates so much of the country's history. However, Fred Khumalo handled these topics in a way that wasn't sentimental or sensationalised. This book was such a great experience for me and I am definitely interested in reading more about South Africa's history 🇿🇦 #bookreview #southafricanbooks #southafrica #sareads #sareaders #sabookstagram #sabookstagrammers #bookstagramsouthafrica #fredkhumalo #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bookcollector #bookaesthetic #bookaddiction #bookaddict #bookphotography #bookphoto #bookflatlay #bookcollection #bookcommunity #bookish #readingislife #alwaysreading #fortheloveofbooks #historicalfic #hiatoricalfiction #readmorebooks #bookishlife #ilovebooks

| REVIEW | . . "That night Stasia took an oath, swearing to learn the recipe by heart and destroy the paper. And when she was lying in her bed again, recalling the taste with all her senses, she was sure that this secret recipe could heal wounds, avert catastrophes, and bring people happiness. But she was wrong." . . SYNOPSIS: At the start of the 20th century, on the edge of the Russian Empire, a family prospers. It owes its success to a delicious chocolate recipe, passed down generations with great solemnity and caution. A justified caution: this is a recipe for ecstasy that carries a bitter aftertaste. Stasia learns it from her Georgian father & takes it north, following her new husband, Simon, to his posting at the centre of the Russian Revolution in St Petersburg. Her's is only the first in a symphony of grand, all too often doomed romances that swirl from sweet to sour in this epic tale of the red century. . . In my Ken Follett and Jeffrey Archer binging days in school, when historical fiction tomes were easy work and not a big deal, I might have been more receptive, more welcoming, of this book. I would have devoured it easily within a matter of days & relished it. But I'm no longer in a headspace which allows that now, for better or for worse. I got this last week of December and I read the first two parts in March before dropping it. In August, I read two more parts, covering 42% before realizing I was forcefully going on a tedious chore. It's a straightforward and conventional novel, envisioned as a letter from narrator to her niece detailing a family history spread over many generations and a century. Logically, the narrator wasn't present for most of the events and the book has this intensely "told" quality to it, heavy on description & proleptic cliffhangers about portentous futures. Its grasp of history is too basic, "sweeping", naturally relying on a lot of (melo)drama & coincidence to propel a 900+ page narrative forward. I didn't find the characters that convincing either to sustain enough long-term interest to finish it. It plods along satisfactorily & the prose is adequate. It's not IBP material. . . . .

🔥Book review🔥 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 - Connilyn Cossette 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯_𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘙𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Like Flames in the Night is the fourth book in the Cities of Refuge series by @connilyncossetteauthor. I was so excited to finally be able to read this book, given that this is my favourite book series ever! I love these characters so much and it was so wonderful to catch up with this wonderful family and be a part of their lives again for a while. I could honestly read 1000 pages about their day-to-day lives and I would be beyond happy, that's how much I love them. Connilyn Cossette is one of my all time favourite authors because she brings the ancient world so vividly to life, writes incredibly beautiful love stories and weaves Biblical truth through it all. Her books have a way of turning my heart towards God and awakening a new appreciation and awe of who He is. I loved the character of Tirzah, a strong woman who has experienced so much pain in her short life, but who is willing to do anything to help set her people free. I also really enjoyed how unorthodox her relationship with Liyam was and how they came to love each other as they both dealt with their own scars and misconceptions. I highly recommend this book along with the entire Cities of Refuge series and the Out from Egypt series which precedes it. I am very tempted to re-read them all! #christianreading #christianfiction #historicalfic #hiatoricalfiction #bookstagram #sabookstagram #bookstagramsouthafrica #sabookstagrammers #sareads #sareaders #connilyncossette #likeflamesinthenight #bookseries #bookphotography #bookphoto #bookflatlay #bookcollection #bookcommunity #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bookcollector #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookaesthetic #bookrecs #bookseriesrecommendations #bookrecommendation #booksilove #biblicalfiction

“We also served.” Despite living in Australia, I’ve not thought of the consequences for those who served our country during war and haven’t been recognized, haven’t been able to stand up on ANZAC Day and March with pride with their fellow Aussies and I feel a little ashamed. @alli_sinclair has done a masterful job of sending the reader into wartime Brisbane in The Codebreakers. There is love and heartbreak, joy and anger but threaded through it is that unspoken need to just do what has to be done to end/win the war. It makes me wonder whether we’d have the same strength of character if we (gods forbid) find ourselves in a war that the entire country bends its collective focus too in this day and age. I cried at the end when the Garage Girls finally got their recognition. That medal and those words from the UK Prime Minister would have been an immense relief to these remarkable women and I’m so proud of them. “Their Strength Lay in Silence” 🌟🌟🌟🌟/ 5 (Thanks to @jessicalperymansbooks for initially recommending this one ❤️) #bookstagram #bookreview #australianauthor #thecodebreakers #hiatoricalfiction #thegaragegirls #bletchleypark #worldwar2 #paperback #bookstagrammer #signalsintelligence

Many thanks to @prhinternational for free e-copy via #NetGalley #partner #ad 𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝘿𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨 Soul Lanterns by Shaw Kuzki, Emily Balistrieri (Translator) Publication Date : March 16th 2021 Publisher : #DelacortePress @delacortepress Genre : Historical Fiction / Middle Grade Ratings : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 Soul Lanterns was amazing translated Japanese middle grade historical fiction that revolved around three middle grade friends and their exploration of what happened on 6th Aug, 1945. Story was about tragic historical event, its impact on people and their life quarter century later. It was about loss, grief, guilt, regrets, and healing journey of people. Best part of the book was those stories kids discovered and how it moved and inspired them to create art that can express such huge grief and message.  This was fictionalised version but it still was very impactful. I also liked the way Japanese culture and geography of Hiroshima was written. I loved the messages kids learned in this book and even for readers. Overall, Soul Lanterns moving, impactful, and powerful fictional retelling of events of Hiroshima for middle grade readers. It sure is little dark and there is no lighter way to tell such horrific event and I see text books don’t show such closure look on what people have gone through, so this was book represent it so well and I think 12 or 13+ readers can digest this. #fiftywordsforrain was incredibly heartbreaking, but worth the time and effort to get through. Nori becomes so much more than she believed she could, would, and deserved to be. Yet, I wept for her every step of the way. I’m still processing, but @ashalemmieauthor created a story that lives in my heart and a character that will stick with me. #Repost @book_briefs01 with @make_repost ・・・ Book Review📚📙 Book Name: Forgotten Heroes of WW-II The French Resistance Author Name: Luis Gil Armendariz ⭐My Ratings : 4.9/5 👉Forgotten Heroes Of WW-II The French Résistanc By Luis Gil Armendariz, the story in the book based on life of the hero's of world war 2. 👉This is an intense book, it is a bit long, it has 43 chapters in total. The book takes us back in the time around 1940 when Germans invaded France that lead to creation of many resistance cells. It is a very descriptive book. I personally relished reading it. 👉The story is about world war 2 and the main character of the story named Francisco (Chico)And Chico decided to join army. And his family contributed to the war is written in the book. He looks like a Chinaman. He wanted to be a paratrooper or be assigned to Intelligence. 👉After passing the exam he offered the job as a cook by alien. After that He drove straight to colonel Utterback’s house. and explained all the situation and next day he assigned to the most critical mission of the war. Then training, selection and prepration of world war 2 to ending of world war 2. And retired as a full Colonel. All the story starting to end was really inspiring. 👉It is a long read and still I caught it very interesting to go through the entire book. If you have to travel for miles and usually end up with boring reads then consider this book for yourself. 👉It will boost up your historical knowledge and understanding of political science education. I am pleased to be a part of this journey. 👉Book covered every aspect of life people at war had lived. It's spine-chilling, emotional, & filled with actions. I can recommend it to all students and adults and for children below +12 under the guidance of their respective guardians. It's a great book written with patience and experience. . Happy Reading . . . #worldwarii #hiatoricalfiction

*Book Review* Half Life Jillian Cantor Adult Historical Fiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 “You can love your work or you can love your family, but it is impossible as a woman to have both, to have it all, isn’t it? We’ve all heard bits and pieces of the life of Marie Curie. This book takes that life and adds “What if?” What if she didn’t leave Poland and go to Paris for school? It explores the possibilities of Marya’s life if she chose differently at this pivotal point in her life. This was fascinating to read. What happened in one life, didn’t necessarily happen in the other but there were many similarities, even if they were years apart. The differences it brought about were so interesting to think about. How one choice can shape our lives. It can even shape others lives. That choice can affect who we become, who we love, and how we treat others. I didn’t know much about Curie before this book, but she is definitely one to admire. She blazed the way for women in the work place in so many ways. She won Nobel Peace Prizes (two) and overcame obstacles and trials with fervor. Our world today is shaped because of her discovery of radium and polonium. Thank you to Harper Collins for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. This book releases Tuesday, March 23, 2021. The full review is on my blog! ✨𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐆𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐀𝗪𝐀𝐘 CLOSED!✨⁣ ⁣ What is your go to genre when you need to relax? When you’ve had a busy day and your brain is like sludge and you can’t think straight? Historical fiction is ALWAYS my go to genre. I love that it helps me escape to another time and place. We get to travel through pages! And meet new friends.⁣ ⁣ This book was absolutely lovely! It has all the elements I love in this type of a story - a stunning setting (Scotland), a quirky female lead (Lily, a nurse), a redemption tale, and my FAVORITE enemies to lovers trope. ⁣ ⁣ The story follows Lily Durham, an heiress who can’t seem to find her footing in her American life. She heads to the countryside of Scotland where she immerses herself in her new job as a nurse during WWI. There she also meets her match, the grumpy Alec MacGregor, Laird of an estate he’s desperately trying to save. They do not see eye to eye from the get go! But they begin to work together to solve some mysterious happenings around the castle. ⁣ ⁣ I thoroughly enjoyed this adventurous historical romance. From the details to the dialogue, I was swept away by this sweet, slow bloom of a romance. ⁣ I love when male characters can appreciate the strengths of an unconventional heroine. This was an inspiring story of finding yourself and where you belong. ⁣ ⁣ Thank you to @tnzfiction @jnellciesielski and @tlcbooktours for this delightful novel!⁣ ⁣ 𝐓𝐎 𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑:⁣ like and SAVE this post⁣ Follow me so you stay up to date on future giveaways⁣ Share this post your stories + tag @mommaleighellensbooknook⁣ Not affiliated with IG. It took me a minute to figure out with this book was truly about. I went into it thinking it was a Romance because I really hadn’t read the synopsis I just knew that I wanted to read it. That is completely wrong. It is not a romance at all. This book is about a mothers love and what lengths she will go to keep her kids safe and healthy. There is so much more with in the book as well. However you know me I don’t like to give away too much. But I will tell you that I absolutely love this book and I can’t wait to read another one of her books which I will be doing next month. Thank you @kristinhannahauthor @stmartinspress and @netgalley for gifting me this eARC. It was my pleasure reading it. ❌ SOLD ❌ Two mighty kingdoms are engaged in endless, merciless war, but change appears imminent. King Philip is meeting his archenemy, King Theodo, to sign a peace treaty. But King Philip and his men are tricked and consigned to the squalid dungeons of King Theodo's castle. Soon, his son, 12-year-old Prince Florin, is lured to the castle, where the same horror awaits him. On a whim, King Theodo decides to make the captive crown prince his second Fool, trained by Mimus, an enigmatic, occasionally spiteful, and unpredictable court jester. To add to Florin's misery, he and Mimus are fed a daily portion of gruel, forced to live in a dark, damp tower, and required to entertain the court on demand. But events ultimately turn for Florin and the other captives. They escape and it is Mimus's intervention that helps make it possible. Mimus is a stunning novel that will take readers in its grip and hold them until the last page is turned. Through the brilliant rhymes, jokes, and wordplay of Mimus, the unceasing action and compelling events are sprinkled with lightness and humour. ⭐️A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles⭐️ . Count Alexander Rostov has been sentenced to life in the Metropol, a grand hotel in Moscow. He is an aristocrat that has never worked a day in his life. He has gone from the best suite in the hotel to a tiny room in the attic. Along the way, Rostov makes friends with numerous people, gets a job in the restaurant, becomes a father to an orphan, and lives his life in somewhat peace. Will this be the way his life goes? Is this how it ends? Trapped in a hotel for the rest of his life? . I loved this book! Towles has beautiful imagery in his writing. As I read the book I felt like I was there. This was my book club pick and I think I was one of two people who enjoyed it. I read this one because I had read his previous book Rules of Civility and loved it so I knew this would not disappoint. This is a longer story and if you are looking for something shocking or some mystery, this is not that book. But if you want a story that is beautifully written and takes you to a place different from where you are, this is the book for you! . Have you read this book? The Mirror & The Light, the much awaited conclusion to Hilary Mantels award winning historical fiction Thomas Cromwell trilogy dropped earlier this year and quickly made the Women’s Prize for Fiction Shortlist and the Booker Prize Longlist, as well as my personal, just as prestigious, MUST READ list. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m been holding on to my copies of Wolf Hall ( #1) and Bring Up The Bodies ( #2) for literal YEARSSS waiting for the completion of this trilogy (BUTB came out in 2012!). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have always loved Tudor England history and have been obsessed with it for most of my life so this series should make my favorites of all time list with little effort. Having read about Hilary Mantel’s process and the amount of work that goes into her books I definitely have high expectations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you made it through this behemoth trilogy?
