Everybody has trauma because human beings are all infallible. As children a survival strategy one method we use is disassociation. When adulthood is reached we can have effectively either suppressed memories (this will often come when people say they either don’t remember their childhood) or they remember good stuff very generally however not the negative. People wrongly believe that if they had parents that were teachers, therapists, doctors, that they means they don’t have trauma. No parent or person is perfect and until we can acknowledge that the people who may love us the most can also have hurt us the most then there’s often detrimental affects on our mental health as adults. Chronic anxiety, people pleasing, drug dependency issues to name but a few. The most common feeling is a sense of guilt around acknowledging pain caused by loving parents, especially if you have a dynamic of one being dominant and one more submissive. The truth is that this can all be explored and addressed sensitively with a therapist. I will always encourage my daughter to speak up, if not to me, to a therapist, for any trauma I have caused her. Because I will! As much as I am doing my best not to. Although I myself am a therapist, I model this for her by having my own therapy.
