All she wanted to do was make sure her grandfather was happy. She was such an amazing character & I cried multiple times because of this🥲 The writing was beautiful & I loved the different POVs. I especially loved how the writing slightly changed for each character, this truly made it seem like a different person was speaking. This was such a beautiful book with a real focus on grief and love. The topic of grief was explored across generations which was so lovely to read. I am SO happy with the ending !! All of the characters showed such growth and really came together in the end, not just for Gracie, but for each other & themselves. Sun Seekers is a book I will recommend to everyone. Thank you to the publishers for sending me a copy! This was a lot longer than I felt it needed to be, but it was a really good plot that kept me hooked to the page whenever I picked it up. I found Bel to be a really compelling character to follow, with her eccentric nature as well as obvious mental health issues. 3⭐️ AD-PR PRODUCT An intriguing thriller with a shocking twist! 🔥 This was a likeable thriller that started off as a slow burn and the more I became intrigued, the more the pace quickened. Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s sister was murdered twenty years ago and she’s still searching for answers and other missing girls. That’s until missing teenager Ellie is found in the woods. She had disappeared two years ago, and she’s an echo of her past self. But something’s not right. Where has she been? Chelsey has to find out before the next girl is taken. I thought the premise sounded amazing. A determined detective out to gain justice for her sister and to save local teens who have disappeared over the years. I liked the Japanese representation through the MC and I thought she was likeable, disobeying orders of her seniors. I loved the interchanging numbered chapters of the current day and the Roman numeral chapters from Ellie’s POV being kidnapped and held captive. These worked incredibly well together. I wasn’t a huge fan of the direction the book went in, its topics or the characters we were introduced to and I felt quite disconnected. I enjoyed some of the twists as they were unexpected, but I feel so blindsided and like certain plot points were silly and unrealistic. Overall, this was an easy to read debut thriller that had me gripped in the last 100 pages and consisted of a few twists and turns. I got through this in a couple of hours and that was only because I had to sort dinner and do other boring adulting tasks. I loved the characters and the relationship that starts to develop between them. The setting is beautiful and the dialouge is very immersive and gripping! Maureen Johnson is a solid thriller writer but this one missed the mark for me. It felt a little deflated and boring for me, not nearly as gripping as the Truly Devious series. I want to thank the publishers for sending me a copy - this was right up my street! I loved the setting of the late 90s and the queer representation, but I felt like it was possibly too long, and could have gone harder with the scarier aspects of the plot. For a debut, this was fantastic, the characters were really well fleshed out, the relationships were strong and the setting was really well written - it was very gripping from those points. The time changes and flashbacks could be a confusing element to some readers, but I enjoyed myself. 🌟🧚♀️ QOTD: what’s the last book you finished reading and what did you rate it? —— Thank you so much @titanbooks for this gifted proof copy of When Among Crows by @veronicaroth 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 When Among Crows is the first Veronica Roth book I read after the Divergent series and it did not disappoint. It’s a novella (only about 170 pages) so I flew through it. I do believe that if the book had been a bit longer, the story would have had more depth. I really liked it nonetheless. I enjoyed the differences between people and species and it wasn’t hard to understand at all, which I think all fantasy readers can appreciate lol 🤣 The insta friendships did feel a bit forced and rushed to me, though. They go from strangers/enemies to basically besties in only a couple of chapters, but I do feel this has more to do with the fact that the book is so short than with the writing, there wasn’t really any time for the characters to get to know each other better. I did enjoy the interactions though and I really liked that we got all 3 POVs, helps you understand each character and their motivations better 🙏🏻☺️ The romance aspect came a bit out of nowhere for me, there wasn’t really any build up, so that was a bit of a surprise haha. Not unpleasant though, just a bit like *boom* SURPRISE BITCHES 😜 Overall, I would recommend this book! It is fast paced and because it’s only 170 pages long, you can easily squeeze this in between 2 other books or to get out of a reading slump. A feel-good story about the power of books ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The moment I heard about The Librarians of Rue de Picardie, I knew I wanted to read this book. It’s a charming piece of historical fiction based on fact, and a great tale of female friendship, resilience and heroism. Occasionally I felt like the characters were a little too perfect, which took me out of the story a bit, but that it became apparent why they had been moulded like that in the final chapters of the book. And it was really interesting to read the author’s note and learn more about the remarkable real women who inspired @jskesliencharles story. — BOOK REVIEW — The Household by Stacey Halls #adprproduct I’ve read everything Stacey Halls has written to date, and with varied success. I LOVED The Familiars, I enjoyed The Foundling, but Mrs England was lacking a bit of depth for my tastes. The Household falls between Mrs England and The Foundling for me, and I think if you enjoyed either or both of those books then you’re going to love this one too. The vibes are a good match, and the sort of story feels inkeeping with those two. I do think The Familiars is a bit of an outlier, it doesn’t read in the same way as her others. Or perhaps I just feel that way because it was the first I read, and now it’s been a while - maybe I’d feel differently on a reread. All that to say, the Household is a solid book. It takes an interesting time in history (set against the backdrop of Charles Dickens’ home for fallen women) and delivers its story with compelling characters that move the plot along. It doesn’t do anything ground-breaking, but it’s also not trying to. I think this is the sort of Historical Fiction that can appeal to non-Historical Fiction readers, and gives it a wider appeal. Not one that will stick with me, but a fun time, and worth giving a try next time you want a nice quick easy-reading HF to curl up with, this one delivers that perfectly. Happy Release Day to The House that Horror Built by @authorchristinahenry I have read most of Christina's books and only a couple older ones still sitting on my TBR, there's something I really enjoy about her writing and subject matter so I was really excited for this new release --------- Review: Harry loves horror movies, so when a job in the house of one of the established, but now reclusive, directors comes up, Harry can't refuse. However, she doesn't want to gush and risk her job. This is tricky as Javier Castillos house is filled with props from his movies, and other iconic scary movies, and Harry is tasked with cleaning the same. All whilst keeping to herself, and keeping her job to provide for her son. However, when a turn of events means Harry risks being homeless (again) she may have to turn to Mr Castillo more, and being more involved risks opening wounds of past scandals and family ties.... all whilst trying to keep her own family unit together. Nice wee build up tension book with some creepy moments, keeps you asking questions along the way. I loved the movie references intertwined with the fictional movies from the books Director. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood The UK proof copy of Atwood’s well known futuristic dystopian novel, the basis for the TV series that debut in 2017. A tale of powerless women in a patriarchal society. The novel won the Governor General’s Award in 1985 and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. It was also nominated for the 1986 Nebula and Booker Prize and the 1987 Prometheus Award. This copy with an early trial jacket (a modernist woman in red clutching a handbag) , which was changed entirely for the eventual publication, reportedly due to objections from the author (David Rees 6/97 - Quill and Brush Author Guides).
🏚️ The House That Horror Built 🏚️ Ad-Pr Product Harry Adams is a huge horror movie fan, so when she lands a job cleaning props for a renowned horror director, she can't believe her luck. But Javier Castillo is a recluse with a tragic past - his wife and son have mysteriously disappeared after his teenage son is accused of murdering a young woman. When Harry hears strange noises coming from a locked room upstairs in the gothic mansion, she realises all is not as it should be and has to make some difficult choices. I could not put this book down! I thought this was an absolutely brilliant horror novel with some fabulous characters and some genuinely scary moments (as in, don't-read-this-on-your-own-in-the-house-at-night scary! Like me. Which I did.). I absolutely love a gothic mansion as a setting and this one definitely lives up to the genre. Book Review 🧩✨ The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers, Samuel Burr ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ [I was very kindly gifted a proof copy of this book by the publisher] This was a genuine, sweet, interactive (!!) cosy mystery novel that I really enjoyed. For me, it reminded me of a dialled down Thursday Murder Club, but thankfully there was still enough depth to the plot to propel the narrative along. It seemed well-balanced. We follow the 25-year-old (but eighty at heart) Clayton Stumper as he goes on a journey to discover his parentage. He was taken in as a baby by the eccentric ‘Fellowship of Puzzle Makers’ - a commune of elderly quizzers, maze makers and cruciverbalists, among others - after he was found on their doorstep in a hatbox. He’s always stuck within the walls of his home at Creighton Hall, but when Pippa Allsbrook, the woman who raised him as her own, dies, she starts him on a trail of puzzles to find his birth parents. He’s going to meet plenty of people along the way, and maybe just find that there could be a life for him outside the Fellowship, if he wants it. So full of heart, and I think a great holiday read for this nice warmer weather! I fell in love with the characters and lived for when Burgess took care of Tallulah. I loved the connection with Burgess’s daughter and felt for the tender moments. But the person that holds them both together is the enchanting Sophie, who is their touchstone in both worlds. The novel is fast-paced and thrilling, I found myself unable to put it down as events hurtled along to a conclusion. As a reader, you know what happens in history. The emotional tug is to see whether these characters make it out unscathed. Taylor deals with the historical topics with sensitivity and great accuracy. Characters that are truly abhorrent are fully realised, not caricatures. There is wonderful character development that takes place even with the secondary characters, but my heart, like the two versions of Max, belongs to Sophie. This is an instant hit for me - you’ll love it if you like WWII historical fiction, an epic love story and a twist of magic.
