I got my leafy greens planted out in my green stalk, it was so lovely getting my hands back into the soil and now to have vibrant growing greens outside to start harvesting soon to eat. If I never build another rock retaining wall it will be too soon! This project tested our limits physically and relationally, but I’m so proud of how we worked together to get it done. Not only did it take more work and materials than we thought, but also mental effort. Fitting rocks together like Tetris is harder than it sounds! But it’s finished and we are very happy with how it turned out. H E R B S In previous years I have had limited success growing herbs. This year I not only wanted to keep my herbs healthy but also maximize how much I use from them. I’ve now successfully grown rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano, chives and mint. Here’s a few things that have made a big difference. . Bigger pots - Using containers big enough for my plants to grow good root systems has been the single biggest factor in growing healthy herbs. Rather than growing one herb per small Pinteresty pot, I’ve grown several together in these large terracotta pots. Not only is it visually more appealing but they seem to really like it also. . Learning about each herb’s life cycle - Like every other plant, herbs have specific growing seasons and requirements. Learning these has helped me know when to plant and what to expect. Did you know that rosemary, thyme, and oregano are perennial? If I take care of them I can harvest from them all spring, summer, and fall. Then they’ll die back in the winter and grow again from the same spot the next spring. . Harvest frequently - The more you harvest, the more herbs will grow! This year I have been harvesting regularly and getting creative with how to use them. Lately Ive been trying to include fresh, homegrown herbs in each meal I cook. This has made my meals much more flavorful and also saved a lot of money not buying them at the grocery store. But even then, herbs produce a lot more than I will ever be able to use fresh. At the time I planted I was already making a plan for how I would preserve and store each herb. So far that has included drying and storing rosemary and thyme, freezing basil in the form of pesto and little cubes with EVOO, mint ice cubes, and chive salt. . Side note: this purple opal basil has been a show-stopper addition to my herb garden this year. Rather than harvest from it, I’ve allowed it to flower and the beautiful purple blooms have been totally worth it!
I have a love-hate relationship with Texas summers. The days can be brutal, but there is something magical about the evening. The sun is softer and the cicadas singing. There’s a peaceful stillness in the air and it’s a lovely time to be in the garden. This basil bouquet is just another thing to love about summertime. I’ll be harvesting bunches just like this all season, even when it’s too hot for much else to grow. We eat as much fresh as we can but also store it in the form of pesto and frozen cubes to use in dishes this winter. These tomato seedlings are now planted for a fall harvest. They are just proof that, like every season, it goes by too quickly. During the evening when the sun is going down for the night, these broccoli flower blooms shine so bright, their bright yellow flowers glow and bring so much happiness to my garden, and the pollinators love them! It makes me sad that I didn’t get any broccoli from them but at least I got these flowers and now seed pods that are growing that I’ll let dry out to harvest more broccoli seeds for next year! 7 months of waiting was absolutely worth it for all of this gorgeous garlic. Honestly, garlic is one of the easiest things I’ve ever grown. It takes a while but for me it was almost completely hands off, even during freezing temperatures in winter. All I had to do was add a little bit fertilizer in the spring and be patient. This is the Silver White variety. It will cure on the rack for 3-4 weeks and then provide us fresh garlic for the next year, plus cloves to plant again in the fall. You can grow garlic without a big garden. These were grown in containers. They were actually started while we lived at our old house. This might be the best drink I’ve ever made. Looking for more ways to save my herbs, I decided to make mint ice cubes. And I will never not have them now. Tonight I pulled together a strawberry mojito and the flavor the fresh mint released as the ice soaked in the drink was sooo good. I will be drinking this all summer. Grow mint. Chop it up. put it in an ice cube tray with some water and freeze it. Drying Fresh Herbs My herb garden is growing well and unlike last year, I’m not waiting until the end of the season to figure out how to use the extra. With no kitchen and limited cooking I’m not using as many fresh herbs, so this year I’m experimenting with drying and preserving. Air drying is only one way to do it but the easiest for me right now. Plus it makes my pantry smell amazing. Herbs like rosemary and thyme are the easiest to air dry but I’m also trying it out with more tender herbs like basil and oregano. Cut your herbs and bundle them together with all of the stems facing in the same direction. Hang in a warm dark place with good ventilation for several weeks. I have a love-hate relationship with the wind. On one hand, it can be refreshing and invigorating. On the other hand, it can be a total nightmare for my garden. Yesterday's wind was particularly brutal, and I'm not looking forward to the forecast for this weekend. My poor little snapdragon didn't stand a chance. It's frustrating to see something you've worked so hard on get destroyed by the elements. But I refuse to let the wind defeat me. I'll try putting the snapdragon in some water and hope for the best. And if it doesn't make it, well, I'll just have to try again. That's the thing about gardening, it requires a lot of patience and persistence. Who says you need sunshine to brighten up your day? My son and I spent this gloomy day hopping from one plant nursery to another, on a quest to find the perfect plants to add to our garden. As we explored the different nurseries, we stumbled upon some amazing finds! We got our hands on some gorgeous dahlias that were too beautiful to leave behind, and also picked up a few other fun plants that caught our eye. Day 1 of our backyard landscaping project! This is definitely the biggest project we’ve taken on together. Today we successfully terraced our backyard into two flat levels instead of one slope. My raised garden beds will be on the upper level. We also waged war against bamboo, pulling up some roots as tall as me. This man has worked tirelessly the last few months planning and implementing all of the changes we envision at our new house. Our backyard project is a big one and he has taken the lead on researching, pricing and sourcing all of the things we need. Flowers and more flowers! Having our wedding in the garden of Casaloma, I decided all the flowers, bar some lovely hydrangeas given to me for table decorations, I would buy as plants & put them in pots & them attempt to keep them alive/grow myself. After the wedding I would plant the garden as a legacy to our amazing day. No mean feet for pretty much a non gardener until now 😆 I did it though, & the garden has ALOT of the plants, I've even had to stop buying plants! I brought mainly perennials, bee & butterfly friendly & they looked fantastic for the weekend. This has been my project from the last two days. These tomato seedlings were quickly outgrowing their initial pellet starter pods so I separated them and put them into their own containers. Once the tomatoes mature more and we get closer to spring planting, these containers will go right into the ground when it's time to plant. The roots will grow right through the container and into the soil in the ground! How cool! Some seedlings are suffering a bit of a transplant shock, but that's expected. Most are doing great.
