First lesson learned, I planted a lot of my flowers too late. My growing zone (6b), is very tricky. We went from frost to 75 in a week. The secret is to cover the ranunculus and anemones in a low tunnel, which isn’t easy to do in a small yard. I might be a few weeks behind but I’m still grateful for the small bouquets I can make while I wait. Exciting news.... 25 colonies of honey bees are arriving for a twelve day work siesta in the Orchard from our friends at Rulison Honey Farms. They are a family owned and operated farm located in the rural town of Florida in the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York. With over 125 years of beekeeping experience, the Rulisons work year-round managing approximately 2000 colonies of bees, pollinating orchards in the Spring, extracting honey during the summer and early autumn, rendering beeswax, filling and bottling honey by hand, We actually sell their delicious honey here at our orchard store. We are partnering with them on this excting endeavour to promote the industrious honey bees and their important place in the world of agriculuture and farming in the United States of America. When i took this shot the yellow jacket was less than 6 inches from my face and almost touching my camera lens. (It is worth noting I am extremely allergic to some wasp stings) I accidentally bumped him a few times while trying to get close enough for this shot and he was a bit annoyed at me disrupting his meal; some old fruit that had crystalized in the sun. Once he realized I wasn't a threat he just got on with the task in hand. Yellowjackets have lance-like stingers with small barbs, and typically sting repeatedly, the venom, like most bee and wasp venoms, is primarily dangerous to those who are allergic or are stung many times. The adult yellowjacket diet consists primarily of sugars and carbohydrates, such as fruits, flower nectar, and tree sap. Larvae feed on proteins derived from insects, meats, and fish.
