Meditation is so powerful and there are so many advantages to it. 🧘 I practice meditation as a part of my daily routine. You can meditate anytime you choose, but my favorite time is in the morning. It helps me to feel refreshed, gives me a clearer head and motivates me for the day ahead. I sometimes find I need to take a few minutes to meditate during the day when I encounter stressful situations or at night to help me wind down from the day and sleep better. Some of the advantages of meditation: 🧘 Better sleep 🧘 Focus and Clarity 🧘 Emotional well-being 🧘 Stress relief 🧘 Reduced anxiety 🧘 Physical health and immune system Just a few minutes at a time can do wonders but to get the full benefits it’s better to set aside at least 30 min. You can use many tools for meditation. Silence and nature are at the top of my list. I also use meditation videos and music. Guided imagery meditations are how I got started when I was teaching a stress management class so that is a go to favorite for me. Elaine Carter will be giving a presentation about Birth Trauma Resolution and then offering a guided imagery relaxation at our ARM Summer Meeting. Elaine has been a member of ARM since 1994 when she was a student midwife. She’s worked in several hospitals in the UK and in all aspects of midwifery care. However, it was within the community that she felt most comfortable, and so in 2009 she helped set up a homebirth team which was probably the highlight of her career. She has trained as a Cranio-sacral therapist and went on to qualify as a Birth Trauma Resolution (BTR) therapist. Due to the transformative effects of this simple but effective therapy, in 2020 she retired completely from midwifery practice to concentrate solely on offering BTR to families and staff members. If you're struggling with anxiety regularly, then this is for you! Talk therapy can be very helpful (in fact, I often cross-refer clients to my talk therapist colleagues!) but it usually ignores the body and can keep you spinning in the same anxiety spirals. Many of my newer clients can explain to me WHY they feel anxious, but they don't have any somatic tools or deeper awareness of their patterns. That tells me they're disconnected from their bodies-- which makes a lot of sense (why would you want to connect with all those anxious feelings??). But that's exactly where music psychotherapy can help! In music therapy sessions, we'll use music-- maybe listening or drumming or guitar or another musical option-- to help you slow down, be present in your body, start to understand your anxiety, and develop tools so you can feel different. You don't even have to know anything about music or playing instruments to benefit! (That's my job!) When we feel different, that starts to affect our thoughts and our patterns and can change them for the better. In my 26+ years of doing this work, I've seen it happen time and again. Gentle reminder… Growth is not linear and neither is healing. I got some bad news this week from my dentist that I have a cracked tooth. I developed it from clenching my jaws at night when I’m asleep. This is a telltale sign that my nervous system is out of wack.
