🪩 𝖳𝗁𝖾 𝖨𝗇𝗏𝗈𝖼𝖺𝗍𝗂𝗈𝗇𝗌 - 𝖪𝗋𝗒𝗌𝗍𝖺𝗅 𝖲𝗎𝗍𝗁𝖾𝗋𝗅𝖺𝗇𝖽 🪩 The Invocations follows three very different young women brought together as they all have the same goal. To find and stop whatever is killing the witches. Krystal Sutherland writes such unique and gross books that aren’t overly terrifying and that works very well for me. It did take me a while to invest in the three girls because three different POVs mean it can be a little while before we return back to the other’s stories but this didn’t impact much on my enjoyment. This was fun, gross and creepy. I’ll be glad not to read the words clots, gelatinous and blood for a little while! My rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Holy moly. This was so gruesomely beautiful. I don’t think I have ever read a book with quite so much demonic possession & the decomposition & putrefaction of the human body. However, as much as I tend not to enjoy this particular avenue of imagery, because it is far from cosy, I literally loved every second. This witchy, paranormal, romantic, & seductive thriller is so so hard to put down, and so much so that I honestly thought I’d end up with demons in my dreams. The main characters Emer, Jude and Zara were exquisitely written. With troubled minds & deeply passionate hearts, they navigated their world of witches & hunters with such hectic feeling. Thank bloody goodness I enjoyed House of Hollow so much – I shall be practically incomplete until I now read the rest of Sutherland’s work. #krystalsutherland #theinvocations #paranormalfiction #witches #hunters #lgbtqia #romance #demon #fiction #bookstagram #bookworm #krystalsutherlandbooks I wanted to post so quickly after I finished this one, the background could have used a little more imagination, but I’m sticking with it 😂

🧷 Han update: 11/05/24 Currently reading THE INVOCATIONS by @km_sutherland as a buddy read with @caitreadsx 🖤 we’re both having such a good time with this and I’m so glad we picked it up this month! I’m also totally completely in love with this @evernightbooks edition 😍 I’ve been writing a lot recently too, working on some short story sample stuff for a writing workshop I participate in monthly - this might eventually turn into a full novel sometime but no pressure on that front, it’s all just for fun! I get so much creative joy and energy from meeting with fellow writers regularly and today was even better with the sunshine and all book community news and new books to talk about over coffee and cake. I’m also finally in the last leg of my MA degree, just one more assignment (short story) to write and hand in before September and then I’ll no longer be a student and will move onto other exciting things! I’ve really loved this course and I’m so glad I took the plunge and switched academic subjects during the pandemic. Sending good vibes to everyone 💗

The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What I loved: 🕯The world and magic system. 🕯The mystery was done really well. 🕯The FMCs, their histories, and the found family. This book was not on my radar at all until I received it with my @evernightbooks subscription. It sounded intriguing, and I love all things witchy, so I was immediately in. It wasn't at all what I expected, but not in a good way. Firstly, I loved the setup and magic system. I loved slowly learning more about how magic works. It's very different from other books I've read, and that was refreshing. Basically, only women can use magic, and they sell part of their soul to a demon, and in exchange, they get a power of their choosing. I loved this aspect and how it played into the story. The demons were wonderfully creepy. What I didn't love was how gory this book was. There was excessive amounts of blood, vomit, and grossness. If you're a gore lover, this probably won't bother you. I'm not a fan of gore, and while I can handle a little bit, parts definitely seemed unnecessary. I also didn't like that every male character was awful and unredeemable. I get it's a novel about women power and the wrongs done to them, but both can be true at the same time. Women can be wronged by men, and there can still be decent men in the world. This novel overlooked that, and it got exhausting. Overall, this was a fascinating read. I really loved the magic system, found family, and friendships. I loved the story, but I did have a few things that irked me. I'm not sure this is something I would read again, mostly because of the gore. But it is an incredibly unique witchy read, and if you're a fan of witches and like gore, I definitely recommend it. Book 7/75: The Invocations by @km_sutherland 🌜🔮⚰️🪓🩸🧿🍃🧟 Magical dark academia horror about scary girls...it felt fated that i would like this book. And i did. for a while. The first pages of this - so atmospheric and intriguing, and unlike anything i’d read in a while. unfortunately i do believe that 3 characters is too many to follow this closely and with unique points of view, that we embarked on our plot too quickly, as a result it impacted the ultimate climax of the story. Similarly the ending was sweet, but these characters leaned too heavy into their stereotypes to be really memorable. that’s what happens when we have too many to follow: we end up with The Rebel, The Witch, and The Nerd. But contrary to all the complaining i just did...i’m going to read more from this author. Bottom Line: a lot of good! not enough. but also lot. #theinvocations

The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland - 4.75⭐ Zara looks to witchcraft to help reunite her with her sister who was murdered. Jude is trying to find a solution to her demon problem. Emer is a curse writer who helps women find power in exchange for part of their soul. When Emer's former clients turn up dead, it seems a serial killer is responsible. The three cross paths, each trying to find the killer and solve her own problems. So I actually don't think I would have bought this if it hadn't been part of the Evernight subscription. I liked House of Hollow but not as much as everyone else seemed to so I wasn't too fussed about this. Well, I know when to admit I'm wrong because this was so so good. It was so creepy from the get go. Yes it's YA but it made my skin crawl and had me on the edge of my seat in the way a lot of adult horror hasn't recently (not all but I've been feeling pretty let down but horror recently). I love the occult, witchiness of it. If you want a story about strong young women, demons and unsolved murders this is for you! Hi Friends 🤍 One of my most anticipated reads is The Invocations by @km_sutherland 🖤 I absolutely loved House of Hollow and when I read this synopsis, I was immediately sold. Witches, magic, paranormal seríal kíller - say no more! @panmacmillansa was so kind to gift me a copy along with a bookmark and badge! How special 🥹 thank you so much! As soon as I finish my current read, I'm starting this. It's already on my bedside table 😄 not so patiently waiting (this is me, not the book 😂). #QOTD : Do you stack your potential reads next to your bed? Or is your bedside table stacked with current reads? About the book: From the author of New York Times bestseller House of Hollow comes a darkly seductive witchy thriller where, though both men and demons lurk in shadows, girls refuse to go quietly into the night.Zara Jones believes in magic because the alternative is too painful to bear—that her sister was murdered by a serial killer and there is precisely nothing she can do to change it. If there’s anything Zara cannot stand it's feeling powerless, so she decides she will do whatever it takes—even if that means partaking in the occult—to bring her sister back from the dead.Jude Wolf might be the daughter of a billionaire, but she is also undeniably cursed. After a deal with a demon went horribly wrong, her soul is now slowly turning necrotic. Flowers and insects die in her wake and monstrous things come to taunt her at night. If Jude can’t find the right someone to fix her mistake, she fears she’ll die very soon.Enter Emer the solution to both Zara's and Jude's predicaments. The daughter of a witch, Emer sells spells to women in desperate situations willing to sacrifice a part of their soul in exchange for a bit of power, a bit of magic to change their lives. But Emer has a dark past all her own—and as her former clients are murdered one-by-one, she knows it’s followed her all the way to London. As Zara and Jude enter Emer's orbit, they'll have to team up to stop the killer—before they each end up next on his list.

I'm tired. I'm fed up. Reading isn't bringing me as much joy as usual. But I persevere. 🪄 I'm going to a curse writing workshop at Hay Festival with the author of The Invocations so I'd like to read it before I go. 🗡️ The Eternal Ones concludes the Deathless trilogy. I hope it's better than the second book. 🚆 The People on Platform 5 is May's bookclub pick.  ♦️ I'm 75% through The Square of Sevens. I'm not sure what I think of it really. 🇺🇬 The First Woman is a book I completely forgot was on my TBR list until a buddy read came of for it and I need a book set in Africa for the @buddyreadbooknookbingo Also featured are some library books I'm currently holding hostage because I haven't quite got around to them. I've also got 2 ARCs that need reading by the end of the month. the invocations — krystal sutherland review 🖤✨ 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 5/5 ✨ 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒆: ya fantasy 𝒗𝒊𝒃𝒆𝒔: witchy, necromancy, demons, murder mystery, found family, sapphic, family drama, sibling dynamics, strong female characters Oh. My. God. I LOVED THIS. Truly one of the best books I have read this year. Where do I even begin? The story follows three girls, all from completely different backgrounds— Jude, the cursed, who writes and places a bad invocation on herself and tethers a demon to her against its will. This demon is quite literally slowly killing her and making her life a living nightmare, while her leg is slowly rotting away. Zara, the smart one, who always followed the rules, until her sister is murdered. All Zara wants now is to bring her sister back so they can talk one last conversation. Instead of throwing herself into her school work like in the past, Zara now spends every second studying necromancy. And finally, Emer, the cursewriter. Emer is a gifted witch who writes invocations for women who need it the most; those who are powerless and need to escape their circumstances. After Emer’s entire family is murdered, she is raised by demons, with the promise that once she finds who murdered her family, she will write one last invocation so powerful that the demon she tethers herself to can eat her entire soul. All three girls end up crossing paths and coming together to solve a string of murders. And they form the funniest and most heart warming found family you can imagine. I did see the twist coming at around the 50% mark, but I honestly didn’t even care because I was having so much fun with this. The characters are so well written that it is almost impossible to pick a favorite. I even have a soft spot for Bael the demon 🥹 If you are even remotely into witchy books, I highly recommend checking this one out! ✨🖤 🏷️ - #theinvocations #krystalsutherland #houseofhollow #witchybooks #yafantasy #bookstagram #bookreview #booksbooksbooks #bookstagrammer #bookphotography #reader #bookrecommendations #bookishcommunity #bookish

With all the ‘bear or man’ discourse happening on TikTok atm - I thought I’d share one of my favourite quotes from The Invocations. the invocations 🔥 by Krystal Sutherland ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read this in late December and never got to writing a review to post on here as I wasn’t as active then. I have not stopped thinking about this book since… Wholeheartedly one of the best books, if not the best book, I read last year. This was brilliant start to finish. I’ve not read anything like it. the three main characters were all so unique and I loved the friendship that blossomed between them. They all had such a big impact to the story and I loved them all. Each one found a part of themselves throughout the book and it was so nice to see their development. The plot was beyond interesting. There was so much information within the story, I felt I was learning so much as I was reading. I very much liked the feminist element to this book, the women having the most power and being the entrusted ones with magic was very great to read about. The twists and turns in this were not expected at all, it had me gasping out loud each time I turned the page whilst things were being revealed. I loved loved loved the ending, it felt well rounded and didn’t leave questions unanswered. I wish I could read this again for the first time. I haven’t felt anything like what I did whilst reading this one. I highly highly recommend you read this if you haven’t!

The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Beautiful @evernightbooks copy! If you could have any power what would it be? Zara Jones believes in magic because the alternative is too painful to bear—that her sister was murdered by a serial killer and there is precisely nothing she can do to change it. If there’s anything Zara cannot stand it's feeling powerless, so she decides she will do whatever it takes—even if that means partaking in the occult—to bring her sister back from the dead. Jude Wolf might be the daughter of a billionaire, but she is also undeniably cursed. After a deal with a demon went horribly wrong, her soul is now slowly turning necrotic. If Jude can’t find the right someone to fix her mistake, she fears she’ll die very soon. Emer is the solution to both Zara's and Jude's predicaments. Daughter of a witch, Emer sells spells to women in desperate situations willing to sacrifice a part of their soul in exchange for a bit of power, a bit of magic to change their lives. This book had a bit of a slow start but once it got there I absolutely couldn't put it down! I liked that the romance wasn't in your face and that the plot was the main part. I kind of saw a twist coming but absolutely did not see the main twist coming! I loved the social commentary that accompanied this book and how the 3 main characters worked together but also against eachother in parts, it was definitely a dysfunctional alliance at the beginning 😂. Overall I really enjoyed it and am excited to read more by Krystal Sutherland #lgbtq #feminism #darkfantasy #paranormal #witchyhorror #serialkiller #thriller #bookrecommendations #4star #booksyoushouldread #krystalsutherland #theinvocations #bookstagramuk

✨️Book Review ✨️ The Invocation by Krystal Sutherland ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ♡ Witches ♡ Demons ♡ Thriller ♡ Found Family ♡ Hunters We have 3 girls with unusual friendships. Witches and demons. Necromancy. Demons who pull out people's spines. Major plot twist( I definitely didn't see that coming) I loved it! It had this amazing witchy vibes with a modern twist. I loved how unique these 3 girls were. These three girls try to solve women's murders and who is witch-hunters. I loved the writing style and how entertaining it was. From start to end. It was graphic, so it's not for everyone, but if you don't mind a detailed description of how someone's dead body looks like after a year, then go ahead and read it! 😀 "𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒍 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒂 𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏, 𝒔𝒐 𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎. “𝐼 𝒹𝒾𝒹 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒻𝒶𝓇 𝓉𝑜 𝑜𝓃𝓁𝓎 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒻𝒶𝓇.” ‘The Invocations’ is a brilliant witchy, feminist thriller book. It had some crazy twists and was genuinely very creepy. The three main characters have to team up against a serial killer targeting young women. However they all have their own dark pasts and links to the occult. I loved the characters and the unlikely bonds they formed. Their witty humour also helped to balance out some very scary moments in this book. If you enjoyed ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ or ‘The Craft’ I would highly recommend this! #krystalsutherland #theinvocations #evernight #horrorbooks #bookstagram #books #witchy #bookblogger #krystalsutherlandbooks #reading

📖 Book Review 📖 Title: The Invocations Author: @km_sutherland Publisher: @penguinbooksaus YOU GUYS I just finished this book and could not wait to share my thoughts because it’s SO GOOD!! Apart from the time when Spotify listening hours forced me to, I could not put this book down!! Between the brilliantly vivid writing style, the loveable main characters, the dark humour, the way the author plays with tension, the use of dark magic, and all the horror elements, there is so much to love in this book. If you’re someone who’s a bit squeamish this might not be for you as there’s a bit of blood and body horror in it, but otherwise I can very strongly recommend this book, especially to YA fans. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ QOTD: This is my new favourite book I read this month! What’s yours? * [Image description: A phone with a screenshot of the audiobook of The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland sits centre screen with a five-star rating below it. Five arrows point outwards from the phone to text boxes, which read, respectively, “YA fantasy horror”, “Lesbian MCs”, “Horror meets witchy murder mystery”, “Witches, demons, and dark magic galore!!”, and “Maybe not for the easily grossed out”.] * 🏷️ #lmsapril2024 #couldntputitdown #oriliumreadathon #thoughts #oriliumreadathon2024 #oriliumspringequinox2024 #bookreview #bookrecommendation #theinvocations #krystalsutherland #penguinbooksaus #yafiction #yafantasy #yahorror #lgbtqiabooks #queerbooks

The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland • Review If you want to read a story with dark, witchy, “feminine rage” vibes (and you don’t mind a lot of body horror!!), then you should read this! The mysterious, witchy aesthetic was very well done, the novel’s vibe was darkly alluring. The characterisation, however, was my major issue with this book. At first, I really struggled to differentiate between the three narrative voices. They all sounded the same, particularly Emer and Jude. Once I could differentiate between the three, I found myself most interested in Emer and Zara’s chapters. Jude definitely had some great moments, but overall I didn’t love her character. The plot twist was amazing, I did not see that coming at all!! And I did really enjoy the ending! Ultimately, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as House of Hollow but it was still good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ [The cover of Krystal Sutherland’s ‘The Invocations’ is on a pink background with 4 arrows of additional information. They read, “body horror”, “dark witchy thriller”, “sapphic main characters”, & “feminine rage.” 3 stars sit above the book cover] [🏷️: #book #books #bookrec #bookreview #review #bookreviews #bookstagram #booktok #read #reading #bookish #theinvocations #krystalsutherland #penguinbooks #witchybooks #horrorbooks #magicbooks ]

What’s a book you couldn’t put down? Full title and author, please. I don’t mean physically put it down, either, sometimes life takes over – but one you were excited to pick back up again each time. I felt that way with both A Lesson In Vengeance by Victoria Lee (left) and The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland (right). Both were books that had me hooked from the very start, and that I was so excited to be able to keep reading. If you haven’t read either of these, I highly recommend it. If you’re reading this, drink some water. * Visible Lesbians – Lesbian Books – Sapphic Books – Sapphic Romance – Lesbian Lit Readathon – Book Lover – Avid Reader – Always Reading – Books I Love – YA Books * #LMSApril2024 #LMSLesbianLitReadathon2024 day 29 couldn’t put it down * [Image description: the two books lie side by side, their covers facing the camera. The Invocations ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “ Even the devil does not trust men to honor a bargain, so it does not deal with them. It offers power only to women.” This book follows three girls: Jude, Emer and Zara. Jude is rich and cursed, Emer is a witch and Zara is after revenge following her sister’s murder. Their paths intertwine as they track down and eliminate a brutal supernatural killer before they also become victims. I inhaled this just like Krystal’s other work. Her writing style is beautiful and keeps me gripped from the get go. I highly recommend this authors work. This book in particular was stunning. The balance between the dark themes and the feminine power was amazing. It was made me feel so many emotions about the daily life of being a woman and the things that we do on a daily basis to survive. The female rage in this was chefs kiss. I could write essays on this book. If you like darker YA fantasy horror featuring witches getting revenge, then this is for you! The Invocations is about a group of girls trying to solve a series of murders, and ultimately get revenge on the men commiting them. If you are a little blood squeamish, beware that the magic system does include some blood! * * [ID: The Invocations is face out surrounded by flowers.] * * #TheInvocations #KrysyalSutherland #YA #Horror #Witches #YoungAdult #Bookish #BookWorms #NoStressBookClub

⚡️ Veckans boktips ⚡️ är idag Krystal Sutherlands nya bok The Invocations. #boktips #veckansboktips #krystalsutherland #theinvocations #bibliotek #skolbibliotek #gymnasiebibliotek #lindholmen #fredag

"Even the devil does not trust men to honor a bargain, so it does not deal with them. It offers power only to women." This. Book. 🙌 I loved every moment of its dark and gory pages filled with demons, witches, and witch hunters. This is one of those books that you know will be a five-star read from the first page. The characters were great. The plot, amazing. And the twists! I didn't see them coming 🙆‍♀️. Q: What was your last 5 star read? "The gift of fear was given to her by the women she grew up around: nannies, teachers, friends, lovers. From them all, she learned to carry her keys between her fingers like knuckle-dusters. She learned to pour her own drinks at parties and keep them close to her, always in sight, never unguarded. She learned to walk in busy, well-lit areas at night and to wear bright, memorable clothing so that if--when--she disappeared, she would stick in the minds of those who'd witness her final hours." #theinvocations #krystalsutherland #witches #witchunters #booklover #library #books #bookstagrammer #boostingya #read #reading #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks #books #bookblog #sabookstagrammer #bookaesthetic #darkacademia #lightacademia #pages #authors #yareads #fantasy #fiction

Hello bookworms!! Today I have a review for y’all of The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland. This is the second book I’ve read by this author. Last year @howlinglibraries and I buddy read House of Hollow. I really enjoyed that book and was looking forward to reading this one. We decided to buddy read this one together as well. This book was just as gruesome and detailed as House of Hollow. I will say the who done it reveal in the end kind of got me. Definitely didn’t see that coming. Also I couldn’t really stand one of the main characters which really dampened my enjoyment of the book overall. I did enjoy this one but I preferred House of Hollow to this one. 🥀 "To be cursed is to be haunted." 🥀 QOTD: What are you currently reading? Picked up The Invocations over the weekend and this book is so easy to get into. Goodreads blurb: Zara Jones believes in magic because the alternative is too painful to bear—that her sister was murdered by a serial killer and there is precisely nothing she can do to change it. 🕷️𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 The Invocations by @km_sutherland “𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧” 🕷️ℚ𝕆𝕋𝔻: What was your latest read? The story starts of slow, with an introduction to the three main characters. While it was slow, it was very intriguing at the same time, with the baseline for the world and the characters laid down strongly The fantasy/paranormal element was done really well, and it felt really unique. I liked how it was sort of hush hush and hard to find information about the invocations, cursewriting and demons All three girls are very different but fit together really well! I also liked how they all were angry with the world and how it all drove them towards each other. Zara, who felt powerless after the death of her sister, Jude, who felt left behind by her family and Emer, who felt alone in the world after an unfair event. Their motivations were believable, and I could really understand where all three girls came from The way the story is written, in spite of the sometimes-slower pacing, is really beautiful and really paints a gruesome picture of the world. It is very descriptive and really made it possible to emerge myself into the story. The way it was written also made the twists really unexpected to me! It felt like my heart was in my throat every time something big was revealed, I loved that! I loved how the murder aspect was tied in it all, it made this whole story so haunting and addicting and I just had to keep on reading! Overall, it’s an amazing story about rage, that I was really entertained by. Definitely recommend picking up this stand-alone if you love action-packed stories with depth and a great atmosphere! 🏷 #bookstagram #books #booklover #bookish #bookdragon #instabooks #bookishpost #bookfeed #reader #readmorebooks #bookaholic #bibliophile #aestheticbook #booksbooksbooks #bookphoto #dutchbookstagrammer #bookishlove #ilovebooks #readingtime #booksofinstagram #prettybooks #booksaremagic #bookreview #theinvocations #krystalsutherland #witches #sapphic #demons #paranormalfantasy #murdermystery

#oriliumreadathon - reflections. Since we're halfway through the month, let's reflect back on all of the books I've read so far this month, since I couldn't think of anything else for this promt and I have not kept up with posting my reads. I've read 8 books and a graphic novel (Wormwood Abbey and Garlic and the Witch were on my kindle), 2925 pages. I have one book left for Lark's two callings and then I'll move on to quests. I flew through The Nature of Witches. I really enjoyed it and it was a super quick read. I felt so bad for her with the way she was treated. The insta love vibe isn't my favorite, but they were cute. I liked The Invocations more than I thought I would. It is a book club read and I'm happy that I could fit it into demonology. It was a little difficult to get into the characters at first, but I loved the idea and plot. A Ghost of Caribou got me caught up on the series. I like these books because they're about researching and protecting wildlife that needs help and also murder mysteries that she seems to find herself wrapped up in a lot. A Fate Inked in Blood wasn't for me. I think I gave it a 2.5. I wasn't really into the characters and I'm not one for smutty books, so her thoughts always about him and how they can't be together were annoying. I would try the second one, but it's not a priority. Shark Heart is surprisingly one of my favorites so far. It's an emotional read and I read the whole book in just a few hours. It really makes you think about how you would spend last days with a loved one and having to live without them. Wormwood Abbey (on kindle) was okay. I like the idea of the story, but the main character is honestly a bit too annoying. I will try the next book because they're very short and dragons, though. #thebookofthorns #hesterfox #thesummerqueen #rochellehassan #thenatureofwitches #rachelgriffin #theinvocations #krystalsutherland #aghostofcaribou #alicehenderson #afateinkedinblood #danielleljensen #sharkheart #emilyhabeck #bookstack #books #bookish #bookstagram

Happy Monday book friends! I hope you had a fantastic weekend! My weekend was a bit of a mix. I have not been sleeping well and that resulted in a bad headache yesterday, but I'm on the mend and I did get some good reading in and some fun book chats as well! As for my current read, I'm about 50 pages into THE INVOCATIONS by Krystal Sutherland. After enjoying the author's HOUSE OF HOLLOW, I was excited to receive this special edition in my Evernight box! I pretty quickly realized that I wasn't paying enough attention listening just on audio with a headache, so I put it down. We're following Zara who is dealing with her sister's death at the hands of a serial killer. She's determined to undo this by drawing on the occult. The atmosphere and vibes have been top notch to start with, so I am looking forward to continuing! I have one book left to finish off my Magical Readathon TBR and I have a few buddy read books to prioritize this week that I'm excited for! What are you looking forward to reading this week? I'd love to hear! #CoffeeAndCurrentlyReading #mugmonday #bookishbettiesclub #readersofsocal #socalbooksta #bookstabuddies📚 #TheInvocations

✨The Invocations Book Review✨ This book follows three characters who all have an aim that can be fulfilled by the occult. Emer, who is a cursewriter and a powerful witch, Jude, belonged to a rich family until she tethered three demons to her soul and ruined her life. Consumed by grief, Zara's only aim is to bring back her murdered sister from the dead. These three girls dive deep into the world of the occult and try to solve the mystery of numerous dead bodies that have turned up all over the city. The book picks up fast from the start and once you enter this world, there is no looking back. The Invocations is one of those kind of books that you keep thinking about even when you are not reading. The book is very graphic and gruesome as it deals with a lot of death, demons, and killing. So if you get spooked easily, I highly suggest preparing yourself beforehand! Since it is a young adult book, you will find these teenagers doing stupid things, but it was fun to read their antics. The world building as I mentioned before is very immersive, dark, and addictive. The three characters have different personalities, yet they have interconnected goals. There is a romance element but it is secondary, and I am glad that it did not steal the show of the main story. The ending was unexpected and it was a full-circle moment. The last 100 pages are packed with horrifying descriptions and demon killing, so naturally my eyes were glued to the book till the end. Overall the book is very adventurous and spooky, I highly recommend you all to read this book! 🩸THE INVOCATIONS🩸 ✨By Krystal Sutherland✨ “Emer Byrne, an orphaned witch with a dark past and a deadly power, a.k.a. the solution to both Zara’s and Jude’s problems. Though Emer lives a hardscrabble life, she gives away her most valuable asset—her invocations—to women in desperate situations who are willing to sacrifice a piece of their soul in exchange for a scrap of power. Zara and Jude are willing, but they first have to find Emer.” This book is a darkly gorgeous story about women seeking power to change their realities, and find some hold against the darkness that men bring against them. Each of the characters have distinct voices, goals, and paths forward, and this story is the meeting point of their journeys. It feels organic, in the way that good stories of this type do, which feels like you’re sliding into something deeper and older than time itself. The excellent storytelling really shines through June and Emers stories, and while Zara gets similar space and development, it did feel as though her conclusion was overlooked a bit to focus on the other two girls. I really enjoyed this book, particularly the girls stories and the fascinating magic system of carving invocations on different parts of the body. Four and a half stars. CW: this book, while not extreme horror, does have some g*re and body horror, with a primary plot point being a serial killer targeting women.

THE INVOCATIONS ✒️✨ by KRYSTAL SUTHERLAND ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Emer is a cursewriter: women in trouble seek out her services inking invocations into their skin to grant them magical powers at a great price. she is sought out by two girls in need of a witch - Jude suffers from an invocation gone wrong that is necrotizing her body & soul. Zara is seeking justice for her murdered sister, just one of a string of Emer's previous clients who have turned up dead. & the three teen girls may have the only real leads on a serial killer hunting witches & killing women. first things first - Sutherland is great at body horror, ugh. 😅 this was so gross. second, I really enjoy the reveals in her stories. they're not particularly difficult to figure out, if you're looking. they're just.. gutpunching & GOOD. anyway, ate it up. this concludes my spring barrage of new horror I've been really looking forward to. 🌸 HAPPY FRIDAY! Three Books Soon Right now I have motivation to read again and here are three books I want to read soon • Ever After Always - Chloe Liese. I liked the first two books in this series and would like to finish it this year • The Invocations - Krystal Sutherland. I actually started this book yesterday, but I am super excited • Where Sleeping Girls Lie - Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. This is one of my most anticipated books for 2024. I hope I have time to read it soon #chloeliese #everafteralways #krystalsutherland #theinvocations #faridahàbíkéíyímídé #wheresleepinggirlslie #books #reading
