When I opened a box of ARCs we got at work and saw THE DEEP DARK by @molly_ostertag, I knew that I had to read it immediately. It is probably my most anticipated graphic novel of 2024. And I am happy to say it doesn't disappoint! Synopsis: Everyone has secrets. Mags’s has teeth. Magdalena Herrera is about to graduate high school, but she already feels like an adult with serious caring for her ailing grandmother; working a part-time job; clandestine makeouts with a girl who has a boyfriend. And then there’s her secret, which pulls her into the basement each night, drains her of energy, and leaves her bleeding. A secret that could hurt and even kill if it ever got out -- like it did once before. So Mags keeps her head down, isolated in her small desert community. That is, until her childhood friend Nessa comes back to town, bringing vivid memories of the past, an intoxicating glimpse of the future, and a secret of her own. Mags won’t get attached, of course. She’s always been strong enough to survive without anyone’s help. But when the darkness starts to close in on them both, Mags will have to drag her secret into the daylight, and choose between risking everything... or having nothing left to lose. There are so many layers to the story in this book that I think everyone who reads it will get something different out of it. But at its core, it's about learning to accept yourself and letting yourself be happy. Mags learns that thoughout the story, and you go with her on that emotional journey. The characters are great, the art style is fantastic as always, and I can't wait to see it in full color. Finally time for #Heartstopper Vol. 5 to get some love on my feed!! I cannot believe that I actually let myself go this long before posting the review! So here it is: 💫Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman💫 Series 📚: Heartstopper 5/5 🌟 Length: 330 pages Genre: LGBTQIA+ Romance, Graphic Novel Finished: Dec 28 What more is there to say? 5 stars on 5 books in a row. Go read these if you haven't already (and yes I know I'm way past the hype for Vol. 5). I love these characters so much! This makes me both so excited for Vol. 6 and also sad because I know that it will be the last time I will experience something new with these characters! On the bright side, I still have (at this moment) the rest of the Osemanverse to read! As well as the 3rd (and hopefully 4th) season of the Netflix show! Thanks to @simonteen for an advanced copy of OTHERWORLDLY by @ftlukens to review! Lukens is definitely a master of YA cozy fantasy, and this book is no different. All the cozy vibes once again! Synopsis: In a place where everyone believes in the supernatural, Ellery doesn't. The constant winter in their area just seems to be bad luck. Especially since no matter how much their family prays to the goddess, they still have to just scrape by. On the other hand, Knox is a familiar whose contract just came up. But instead of going back to the Other World, he decides to make a break for it instead. Where he runs into Ellery. Ellery can't quite believe the magic is real, despite having seen it with their own eyes. In order to stay in the human realm, Knox needs to make a deal with Ellery. And Ellery needs to figure how to end the never-ending winter. As the two start to spend more time together, they realize that there might actually be some sort of spark between them as well. Told in a dual perspective between Knox and Ellery, I loved getting to see both of their emotional journeys. It also helped build the core romance between them, and with the world building. Plus, there is lots of great casual queer rep, which we always love to see in fantasy stories. By the end, I also appreciated that there's just as much importance placed on the friendships as there is on the romance. There's no one version of love, and seeing that in a romance focused story is always excellent. Though there's a bit of action and the stakes are high at points, for the most part, the story is more focused on the quiet, emotional moments. The friendships. The relationships. The emotional growth. You'll get drawn in with the characters, and you won't want to leave them by the end.
