So the Buried and the Bound by @rochellehassanbooks was a book that completely surprised me. It took me a couple of pages to get into it but then I couldn't stop. It was such a good mix of urban fantasy and fae realm. Loved all three of the main characters so much, especially Leo stole my heart and I feel hard for him and his curse problem. There's still so much room for the second book because some questions didn't get answered in the first book and I'm so excited to start the second. I actually listed to the audio book which had three really good narrators and then I was able to snag this stunning @owlcrate edition of the book. Absolutely obsessed with the cover!! "Książę znikąd" to taka ciepła, choc trochę zakręcona książka. Przypomniała mi amerykańską bądź europejską wersję pisaną animacji Hayao Miyazakiego, Isao Takahatego czy Toshio Suzukiego. Ktos napisał, ze jest jak Ruchomu Zamek Hauru, dla mnie troche jak Narzeczona dla kota ;) . Dobrze, że nie ma tu wątku romanyycznego, wszystko by to zepsuło. What's the last book that made you smile? . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫 This is the middle book in The Buried and the Bound trilogy, a YA fantasy series about Aziza, a hedge witch who protects her town from the supernatural and its border with Elphame. I'm not going to spoil the first book, so the brief synopsis I can give of this one is that Aziza and her friends have to go into Elphame in this book and try not to get tricked by the faeries. The last book left open two possible plots to be explored in this book, and while it went with the one I wasn't expecting, I'm sure the other plot line will be explored in the final book. This series is the perfect combination of cozy/sweet and some darker moments, with found family, adorable little supernatural creatures, and more. I highly appreciated little details in this book like Aziza not having recovered from an injury she got in the first book (a rarity in fantasy where everything is magically healed), and instances of sign language. I also loved the little remarks that show the author loves libraries and public transportation. I'm excited for the finale where hopefully the angsty romantic subplot will be resolved and Aziza will fully grow into her role as a hedge witch with mentorship. #oriliumreadathon - reflections. Since we're halfway through the month, let's reflect back on all of the books I've read so far this month, since I couldn't think of anything else for this promt and I have not kept up with posting my reads. I've read 8 books and a graphic novel (Wormwood Abbey and Garlic and the Witch were on my kindle), 2925 pages. I have one book left for Lark's two callings and then I'll move on to quests. I flew through The Nature of Witches. I really enjoyed it and it was a super quick read. I felt so bad for her with the way she was treated. The insta love vibe isn't my favorite, but they were cute. I liked The Invocations more than I thought I would. It is a book club read and I'm happy that I could fit it into demonology. It was a little difficult to get into the characters at first, but I loved the idea and plot. A Ghost of Caribou got me caught up on the series. I like these books because they're about researching and protecting wildlife that needs help and also murder mysteries that she seems to find herself wrapped up in a lot. A Fate Inked in Blood wasn't for me. I think I gave it a 2.5. I wasn't really into the characters and I'm not one for smutty books, so her thoughts always about him and how they can't be together were annoying. I would try the second one, but it's not a priority. Shark Heart is surprisingly one of my favorites so far. It's an emotional read and I read the whole book in just a few hours. It really makes you think about how you would spend last days with a loved one and having to live without them. Wormwood Abbey (on kindle) was okay. I like the idea of the story, but the main character is honestly a bit too annoying. 📚Book Review 🧚🧚♀️🧚♂️The Summer Queen by Rochelle Hassan ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 stars 3.5/5 stars Hassan again proves she has a great grasp on what urban fantasy SHOULD be - I thoroughly enjoyed our returning and new characters and the plot progression was interesting, if slow. However, I do feel like this book suffers from 2nd book syndrome....a lot of pages for a lot less plot than book one, clearly setting up for the big finale in book 3. Still very enjoyable just it just didn’t hit with the same urgency as book 1. I really liked the exploration of the fae realm and how we start to learn more, piece by piece, about the witch world with Aziza. But, there is a big focus on Leo and Tristan and especially Leos crush and Tristan pushing and it just....it took up a lot of pages and felt very repetitive. I have confidence it will be resolved in book 3 but really I think this book was just too long. Beware the games you play with the Fae . . . 4.25 stars 🌟 The Summer Queen defeated the second book curse, and I am so happy! It hurts when a sequel isn't as good as book one, but this book was on par with book one! Following the revaluation of 'The Buried and the Bound', we find our trio dealing with the fae more than they would like as the immortals return to their town looking to return a certain daughter of fae 👀 There were a lot of bittersweet moments that I think show how much each character loves someone/connects with them and yet can still be hurt by their choices. The heartache just did not stop in this book between Leo and Tristan, and I swear it is a special torture because of how much they ache for one another, but the curse ruins it ahhhhhh! Let’s talk about The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan! Dates read: March 25-31 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ The good: I adored the trio most of the time, as well as Jiddo, Meryl, and Hazel. I also quite enjoyed the relationships and how the characters interacted with each other. It was fun to watch how Az viewed Tristan change as the story went on. The ending did a good job of keeping me hooked. The bad: The boys came off as super whiny occasionally, which sometimes got annoying. I also had a hard time getting into the story and often found myself having to reread a part because I lost focus. Overall: I’m sad because every other review I’ve seen of this book was that it was a good book. And I agree, it was well written, I liked the characters, and the plot was good. However I found it hard to really get into the story like I normally do with fantasies. I was halfway through reading The Buried and The Bound when I found out that the sequel, The Summer Queen, had just just been released... of course, I went out and bought it before I even finished The Buried and The Bound. And then I found out it's going to be a trilogy when i originally thought it was only supposed to be a duology???? I can't wait 😭😭😭 Honestly, I could go on and on and on about this series, and Tristan & Leo & Aziza ❤️❤️❤️ I also finished the Ima Koi: Now I'm in Love series. A cute and wholesome read from volume 1 to volume 9. Book: The Summer Queen (The Buried and the Bound 2) by Rochelle Hassan Giving this 4 stars would not be appropriate as the only disappointment for this book for me was that I thought this would tie everything up. I really should make sure to know if an ongoing series I am reading is a duo-logy or will have more books. That aside, I do not have any other negative thoughts about this book so a 5 star it is. For a second book in a trilogy, this one surprised me and did not have the second-book-syndrome. It had its own engaging storyline but still ties everything in book one and what is left to be in book 3 well together. The characters had so much growth but some things were still left to uncover and learn for book 3. I cannot to read the (hopefully) last book in this series and have these wholesome characters get some rest. I think all but 2 or 3 have been audiobooks, but in most cases I also have the ebook or physical book which is really nice for looking up quotes!. I didn't quite meet my goal of reading all of last year's bokrea books before this year's bokrea but I did read most of them!! The Eternal Ones by Namina Forna and A Crown So Cursed by L.L. McKinney! Both are the 3rd and final book in a series and definitely favorites. I love both series so much and can definitely recommend them! Both come with some content warnings, so let me know if you need those! Retro by Sofía Lapuente and Jarrod Shusterman is one of the most recent books and I finished and I really loved it! Gdy ptak wraca do zdrowia szybko okazuje się, że pochodzi on zza mgły, a w rzeczywistości jest zmiennokształtny. The Buried and Bound review!! Hello! I was very lucky and got the arc for The Summer Queen (of course I knew it was a sequel and did not frantically read the first book this month) and that came out this month so I expect everyone to have read it by February! I have seen the buried and bound bouncing around very briefly and I am very hurt no one chucked the book at my face. I had to con myself to get me to read it. This series so far has me prancing around. It is not easy to get me into a trio because I’ll be honest I usually hate trio tropes. It’s usually a love triangle moment and the second I hear love triangle I’m fleeing the city. Thankfully this trio gave me found family and not spite reading hoping the pixies eat everybody. I just really love the characters. Leo is dumb love him, Tristan is sad and dumb love him, Aziza is the only one with functioning critical thinking skills love her. Leos sister needs a good shaking and I’ll be first in line to shake her thank you. Did love playing the game of is Tristan’s chapters going to bring me joy or bury me in sorrow. It was 9/10 sorrow we love consistency. LASTLY!! I love it when series are consistent in the characters characterization. Nothing boils my blood more when in the first book a character is one way for the sequel to have them do a 180 into terribleness. Rochelle deserves forehead kisses she kept things consistent and even though it hurt me I was so grateful. AND THE POOKA! She wrote the best creature to exist. Where has this book been all my life?? It has everything you could possibly want, from mystery and intrigue to magic to a very-nearly-hopeless curse to the most amazing characters– just read it, alright? And there’s a sequel coming soon, so get on it. First off, the magic. I love the concept of hedgewitches and how they work in this book, as well as the lore that ties them to the town. At the same time, this book also shows what can happen when magic goes too far by way of the hag. The hag is such a compelling character in herself, so seemingly undefeatable that I could never predict how the characters were going to make it through each scene, much less to the end of the book. Speaking of the characters! Aziza is such a compelling protagonist. She’s strong and committed without being overpowered or unbending. I especially love the way she plays off Leo as they become friends, as they both grow as people while forming an unlikely friendship. She’s a realistic flawed protagonist that I have no problem getting behind. I love Leo as well, with his unwavering loyalty and commitment to breaking his curse, even when it seems hopeless. Tristan is also great, although there’s not much I can say here without spoiling the plot. Especially with these two characters, every mistake they make seems justified even while you’re shouting at the book wishing they’d chosen differently. Leo and Tristan work so well in contrast with each other, and I’m living for it (I’m living for this whole book, can you tell?). I love the mystery, I love the magic, and I love the hope against hope that everything will turn out alright. Sequel’s out in just over a month (January 23, as far as I know), so get on it now for a new favorite!! Jaka książka ostatnio Was zachwyciła?😍 "Książę znikąd" to niesamowity debiut, który zachwycił mnie od pierwszej strony i utrzymał w tym zachwycie do ostatniej. Świetnie napisana historia, z niezwykle ciekawym przekazem i ważnymi wartościami. Przedstawiona tu historia opowiada o Rodzie, dobrej i lojalnej, ale też ciekawej świata dziewczynce, która mimo strachu zdobywa się na odwagę i pozwala się porwać wirowi wydarzeń, kiedy na jej drodze staje tajemniczy chłopak- Ignis, który nie do końca jest człowiekiem. Książka jest krótka, lecz wypełniona akcją i przygodą, bardzo dużo się tutaj dzieje, lecz ważne elementy zostały ukazane w taki sposób, by odpowiednio wybrzmiały. Historia jest bardzo angażująca i autorce wielokrotnie udało się mnie zaskoczyć! Nawet gdy myślałam, że jestem na właściwym tropie, okazywało się, że jednak nie do końca! Oprócz wątku przyjaźni, jest też motyw przeznaczenia i podróży w czasie, baśniowej krainy z fantastycznymi elementami oraz nutką steampunku. Całość składa się na niezwykły klimat, który z pewnością pochłonie i rozkocha w sobie niejednego czytelnika. Niech nikogo nie zwiedzie to, że książka jest w teorii kierowana do młodszego odbiorcy, dorośli również mogą spokojnie po nią sięgnąć i pokochać, zwłaszcza jeśli uwielbiają baśniowe klimaty i chcą oderwać swoje myśli od codziennych spraw i bardziej złożonych lektur. Miasta otacza mroźna mgła chroniąca ludzi przed niebezpieczeństwami, które czyhają za jej granicą. Podróżowanie między nimi jest drogie i skomplikowane, a obrońców wspierających śmiałków pozostało coraz mniej. Przyznaję, że autorka dała zaczątek intrygującemu uniwersum, jednak nie obraziłabym się, gdyby znacznie bardziej rozbudowała jego historię. Śledząc poczynania Rody i Ignisa, obserwujemy świat zastany takim, jakim jest, bez zgłębiania się w przyczyny takiego, a nie innego stanu rzeczy. W każdym z tych listów znajduje się pewna dziwna ni to zagadka, ni to informacja oraz wiadomość co się wkrótce wydarzy... Pewnego dnia, za sprawą informacji od Anonima, Roda musi znaleźć i uratować kruka, który już wkrótce okaże się czymś więcej niż tylko zagubionym ptakiem... Dziewczyna wraz ze swym nowym towarzyszem musi wkrótce opuścić bezpieczne Brume i udać się w niebezpieczną podróż, poza mgłę, a nawet poza czas. To niezwykła powieść, utrzymana w baśniowym klimacie przypomina bardzo "Ruchomy zamek Hauru". Znajdziemy tu zarówno mechaniczne konstrukty, jak i smoki, zmiennokształtnych, jak i podróże w czasie. Powieść co prawda jest przeznaczona dla młodszych czytelników, lecz sądzę, że każdy miłośnik baśniowych przygód oraz podróży w czasie znajdzie tu coś dla siebie. Bohaterka od dłuższego czasu otrzymuje tajemnicze listy, które przepowiadają przyszłość, przez co jej życie diametralnie się zmienia, bo trafia do niego pewien ranny kruk… Miejsce akcji tej historii osadzone zostało w niezwykłym świecie. Roda mieszka bowiem w miejscowości, która otoczona jest zaczarowaną mgłą. Zadaniem owej mgły jest ochrona mieszkańców przed potworami zamieszkującymi tę krainę. Powiem wam, że ta powieść skierowana jest raczej do młodszego czytelnika, ale sądzę, że i dorośli znajdą tu coś dla siebie! Mnie na przykład zachwycił świat przedstawiony skrywa on, bowiem wiele tajemnic, a sama historia okazała się być NIESAMOWICIE zaskakująca! "Książę Znikąd" to książka teoretycznie dla młodego czytelnika, praktycznie każdy fan lekko dziwnych opowieści znajdzie w niej coś dla siebie. Z początku była ciekawość. Roda dostaje list od anonima, a w niej jasną informację o tym, że musi uratować kruka, który przeleci przez mgłę. Kruk zostaje uratowany, a na następny dzień okazuje się, że jest to w rzeczywistości ziennoksztaltny chłopak w podobnym do niej wieku. Książka jest dziwna, pełna przygód, potworów i bardzo nieoczywistej fabuły. Przez swoje wielkie gabaryty to przeczytania w jeden wieczór. Oczarował mnie świat, fabuła, bohaterowie. Magia tego miejsca, tajemnicza mgła oraz smoki. Tak, książka posiada smoooooki!! Była niemal perfekcyjna. Zmęczyła mnie niestety końcówka, bo to taka końcówka w której dzieje się jednocześnie okropnie dużo, ale również okropnie długo się kończy. Na mnie takie zabiegi nie działają i niestety chociaż bardzo chciałam wciągnąć książkę na raz, to nie dałam rady. Wciągnęłam na dwa. Od zagrożenia oddziela je zaczarowana mgła, która niczym mroźna ściana trzyma monstra z dala od mieszkańców. Życie Rody z tego też względu toczy się bez większych rewelacji. Jak wiadomo, nic nie może wiecznie trwać. Spokój Rody zostaje zaburzony, kiedy dziewczynka zaczyna otrzymywać tajemnicze lisy od Anonima: przepowiednie, porady, polecenia. Gdy w jednym z listów Rodzie Anonim poleca uratowanie rannego kruka, dziewczyna długo się nad tym nie zastanawia i wykonuje zadanie. Może nie byłoby w tym nic nadzwyczajnego, gdyby nie to, że ptak w domu Rody przybiera ludzką postać młodzieńca imieniem Ignis. A to oznacza, że wpuściła do domu zmiennokształtnego. W dodatku kolejne anonimowe wiadomości okazują się mapą prowadzącą daleko poza granice bezpiecznej bariery. • Wieki zawód 😔. • Co tu by dużo mówić? DNF, niestety. To miała być czarująca historia dla fanów „Ruchomego Zamku Hauru” i ogólnej twórczości Studia Ghibli, a oczarowania i zachwytów (dla mnie) było tyle co nic. • Nie przebrnęłam dalej niż do połowy. Nie poczułam więzi z żadną z postaci, główni bohaterowie byli mi totalnie obojętni, niedorzeczność nazywania się najlepszymi przyjaciółki raptem po niespełna tygodniu mnie zirytowała, a dodatkowo średni worldbuilding odebrał mi możliwy fan z lektury. Niektóre opisy miejsc były tak konfundujące, że nie mogłam się w tym odnaleźć i wybijało mnie to z rytmu. Co tym samym wywoływało to we mnie frustrację. • Może to i moja wina, może i wina opisu, ale nigdzie nie widziałam informacji, że jest to książka z kategorii middle grade, czyli teoretycznie dla czytelników 8-12-letnich. Oczywiście, starszy odbiorca wciąż może ją przeczytać i uznać za dobrą, a nawet świetną, ale nie ja. Ale! Nie skreślam tym też wszystkich pozycji dla dzieciaków. • Dlatego nie mam więcej do dodania. Jest to świetna pozycja dla młodych czytelników kochających przygody, fantastykę i science-fiction. Momentami miałam jednak problem, by wyobrazić sobie świat przedstawiony. What is an underrated book that you have read this year and loved? The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan is one of my favorite reads of 2023 so far and I am on a mission to get as many people to read it as possible because it is criminally underrated and the sequel is coming out soon! The first point to try to convince you: this cover!! This is one of the most beautiful books that I own! This is the Owlcrate edition but the regular edition is beautiful too! Next point: it has witches, curses, wicked fae, magic, monsters, and every whimsical creature that you will want in a contemporary fantasy! It is such a magical book and has the perfect amount of creepy fae and forests! 3rd reason: the characters are lovable and had me crying! Aziza is a hedge witch who is trying to protect the human world from the border of fairyland that is slowly crumbling and letting creatures out. She is strong and the perfect fmc! "Książę znikąd" był naprawdę wciągającą, baśniową przygodą✨ Tym klimatem pełnym magii skojarzył mi się filmami studia Ghilbi i trochę z "Dziewczyną, która skoczyła do morza", chociaż mamy tu inne motywy. Roda mieszka w spokojnym miasteczku Brume, odgrodzonym tak jak wszystkie inne miasta Aerlandii magiczną mgłą od czających się za nią potworów. Jednak Roda ma swój sekret - zagadkowe listy od Anonima, które przewidują przyszłość. Jednak gdy zgodnie ze wskazówkami z listu ratuje rannego kruka wszystko się zmienia, gdy ten okazuje się nie być byle ptakiem, a zmiennokształtnym. I jak się okazuje, Anonim ma dla nich plany, które zburzą spokój w życiu Rody i rzucą ją w wir akcji. Roda i zmiennokształtny Ignis, dziewczynka i potwór. Choć są z wydawałoby się różnych światów, muszą połączyć siły. Tak dobrze czytało się tę historię, że pochłonęłam ją w jeden dzień - a to już dużo mówi o tym, jak wciągająca jest to historia. Zdecydowanie zdziwiło mnie, w jakim kierunku potoczyła się fabuła! Ta książka pełna była niespodzianek. Zauroczyła mnie magicznym klimatem i oczarowała ciekawym światem przedstawionym. Aż chciałoby się, by powstało więcej książek osadzonych w tym uniwersum! Bardzo spodobało mi się też jak pokazany jest tu motyw przyjaźni oraz to, że odwaga to nie brak strachu, a siła by działać nawet mimo lęku. "Książę znikąd" to świetna opowieść dla osób w każdym wieku! Opis ,,Księcia znikąd" ukrywa najlepszy element tej powieści. Owe motywy odpowiadają za najwięcej zaskakujących zwrotów akcji i radość z czytania tej książki. Możecie być spokojnie, nie planuję wam tego zdradzić w dzisiejszej recenzji. Jedną z głównych bohaterek tej książki jest dwunastoletnia Roda. Młoda dziewczynka podobnie jak inni mieszkańcy Brume jest odizolowana od świata. Pragnie mieć przygody, jak jej ciotka Dora. Pewnego dnia zaczyna dostawać wiadomości od ANONIMA, które sugerują przyszłe wydarzenia. Dzięki nim pewnego dnia odnajduje kruka, który okazuje się zmiennokształtną istotą. Losy tej dwójki wydają się nierozerwalnie związane i prowadzą ich razem ku jeszcze nieodkrytej prawdzie przez niebezpieczeństwa i potwory. Pomysł na fabułę ,,Księcia znikąd" jest oryginalny i angażujące, choć zaczyna się jak każda tego typu historia. Niestety reszta elementów, które składają się, na tę powieść nie są tak dobra. Kreacje bohaterów nie należą do najbardziej udanych. Niewiele można powiedzieć o cechach charakteru Rody czy Ignisa. Bardziej postacie określają ich doświadczenia życiowe i miejsce pochodzenia Relacje pomiędzy bohaterami na początku są bardziej umowne, niż wynikają z samej fabuły i w niektórych przypadkach pozostaje tak do końca. Są płytkie, ponadto książce szkodzi też szybkie tempo. Światotwórstwo, choć skąpo przedstawione, jest świetnie opisane. Autorka pisze piękne, barwne opisy. Jestem rozdarta, ponieważ w książce ,,Książę znikąd" jest wiele fantastycznych pomysłów. Widać olbrzymią kreatywność i wyobraźnie autorki, ale także jest to nierówna powieść pod względem niedopracowań, o których pisałam powyżej. Niemniej jednak uważam, że przez barwne opisy, magiczne istoty i dynamiczne zwroty akcji, ta powieść powinna przypaść do gustu młodszym czytelnikom. The Fair Folk walk among humans and deal out curses. Only a few can see them, and Aziza just happens to be one of those few. She is both a monster hunter and a hedge witch. She forms a friendship with a strange boy named Leo as they team up to hunt monsters. They are both almost killed a few times and find sanctuary in an unlikely place. Aziza must think fast in order to save Leo and his sister from a hag who lives in the woods, while fighting to stay alive herself. I received a copy of this book in an OwlCrate subscription box, and I love the customizations that they gave it! The redo of the cover is beautiful, and I love the illustrated end pages. I really enjoyed reading this book! It was fun and there was the perfect amount of romance and adventure to keep me entertained.
