Such an interesting book, I really enjoyed the premise, the gothic style and how the story was delivered (with lots of flashback chapters to slowly reveal everything) - it was fairly grim, with things just getting worse and worse for Devon throughout. The main relationships between Devon and her children were really gripping, and resonated well. Love can make us do terrible things indeed. Alternatively, the romance in the story didn’t particularly land at all but that’s a minor gripe really. This is a very creative and imaginative story. It is about a book eater with a brain eater son that is trying to escape her lineage and the patriarchal control of her clan and save herself and her son’s future. There are feminist commentary and modern metaphor on the patriarchy in a fantasy setting. It is well written and engaging and full of heart. Book Review: The Book That Broke the World by Mark Lawrence ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 My thoughts: This was a fascinating continuation to The Book That Wouldn't Burn. The beginning of the story was confusing and I found it took some time to feel set and comfortable in the story. The payoff as the story progresses was very worthwhile and I think this was intentional. So just a heads up if you pick this up that it took some time to feel comfortably placed in the book. I absolutely love the main characters in this book and they continue to grow and develop in very interesting ways. The library setting is also still amazing and the atmosphere of this book is perfect for any book lover. The themes in this book are also very interesting. It is exploring how large groups make decisions, and how to choose between sides and where neither choice is truly good or bad. Probably one of my favorite books 2023 🤩 -> The Book Eaters - Sunyi Dean 📖📖📖📖 The only reason it took me forever to finish this book, was that at some point the formatting of the book was a bit hard for me to handle. And well … life happened. But other than that, I LOVED this book. It doesn’t get 5 stars, simply because I needed a tiny bit more, or a second book, since a few things kinda felt open in the end. And I need answers! Otherwise I really enjoyed this story. The whole lore of the world and families was amazing and it was stunning to read about something completely new. I was super invested in how this book would end, cause I had no idea how the main character would get out of a very sticky situation. The moral dilemma Devon kept facing between wanting what’s best for her kid and what is the right thing to do, was well written and really got to me. So I really wish there was more, but I also get this book as a stand-alone. Will definitely re-read this baby in the future. Synopsis: Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book’s content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean is a book that will linger in your mind long after finishing it. I’m not sure I’ve fully processed this one even though I finished it weeks ago. The Book Eaters is part fantasy, part science fiction, part horror, and part feminist rage. There are only six book eater families left, scattered across England and Scotland, isolated from human society. They live off stories, actually eating books. It’s not an easy book to read. The main character does terrible things but she’s trapped in a system and it feels like there is no way out for Devon no matter what she does. I find it impossible to easily describe this book. It does not simply fit into one genre. It’s layered, with a past and present timeline that comes together at the end. At times the story feels very Handmaid’s Tale, but I also felt like there were layers of the neurodivergent experience, like Devon’s overwhelming experience of entering a busy train station for the first time. This is not an easy book to read. It’s creepy, it’s dark, it’s full of complicated characters trapped in a broken system, but once I started I could not stop reading. Dean did not disappoint with this very unique take on a story that could have been pretty basic. Yine de öyle bir geleneğin içinde anneliğe ve evlatlarına tutunmuştu🥹 Kitap boyunca Devon için, onun adına kararlar verilmesine ve geride bıraktıklarına üzüldüm. #blackstack TBR Ich wurde von @phantastischezeit getaggt, einen schwarzen Stapel an ungelesenen Büchern aus meinem Bücherregal zu zeigen - et voilà 😄 #gameofthrones zählt nur halb, da diese Ausgabe die ersten beiden Bände enthält, und den Ersten habe ich schon gelesen (und geliebt!) - wär auch mal Zeit, hier weiterzulesen 🙈😆 Die #waxandwayne - Reihe zählt zu meinen liebsten Reihen vom guten @brandsanderson , daher ist es skandalös, dass ich den vierten und abschließenden Band noch nicht gelesen habe - ich möchte allerdings vorher die komplette Reihe nochmal rereaden, weil einfach zu viel Zeit vergangen ist und ich das Ganze nochmal komplett genießen möchte 🥰 Von der #matthewcorbett - Reihe habe ich schon so viel Positives gehört, und immer will ich sie in der #spookyseason anfangen - und dann wurde bisher doch nix draus 🤷♀️ Vielleicht ja dieses Jahr 😄 #eisenwolf steht hier schon seit Erscheinen, aber ich wollte erst abwarten, bis der nächste Band oder alle Bände erschienen sind. Die Raben-Ringe-Reihe der Autorin mochte ich sehr gerne, auch wenn ich bei Band 1 zwei Anläufe gebraucht habe. #thebookthatwouldntburn habe ich mir auch direkt am Erscheinungstag geholt, das Cover ist zu geil und es klingt auch mega - leider bisher trotzdem nicht dazu gegriffen 😆 #thebookeaters ist ein dünnes Büchlein von der @illu - Buchbox, das man eigentlich auch mal ganz gut wegsnacken könnte 🤔 Und #es von #stephenking ist ja wohl mal sowas von ein Muss!!! I was only supposed to take one but ended up with two 🫣 2. The Oscar Wilde statue in Dublin. Interesting choice of expression but sure 😏. I like to consider myself a fan of Oscar Wilde but I've only read The Picture of Dorian Gray (though I loved it immensely). Gotta put the effort in to read more Wilde stories. 3. Wilde's wife Constance - 6 months pregnant with quotes written all over the plinth. You can also peep Wilde's home in the background (it's the white house 🏠) 4. The 2 books I ended up walking away with from The Gutter Bookshop. Had a really great conversation with the cashier from Vermont 🥞

🍄Maybe Chaos Pile 🍄 The way I laughed at myself when I realized it’s my May MAYbe pile 😅 Anyway, these are my loose goals for May. 🍄Finish Farseer Trilogy Well, at least start Assassins Quest this month. It’s a chonker and I’ve got a few other shorter books I’m feeling impatient about that I kind of want to squeeze in before committing to the ~800pgs of suffering that is FitzChiverly 🍄Enjoy some stand alones! I keep almost starting a few new series (The Bloodsworn Saga, Red Rising, Air Awakens), but then I get myself stressed about finishing them and about how many I’m already in the middle of (because #anxiety 🙃). SO I’m going to try and pick up some stand alones that have been sitting on my TBR and enjoy a nice, solid, one book adventure. “But, Cat, I see at least one start to a series in this pile” you say?! I adored The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean on audiobook so much and it was such a great reading experience to start out my year. The north English accents were amazing and the premise was fascinating! Devon is a female book eater, and females are becoming less common with every generation. Because of this, the book eater way of life is to marry, give birth, and move on to do more of the same with another husband. Yaşadığı ailede kadınların belli bir görevi var evlenip çocuk yapmak, çocuk 3 yaşına geldiğinde onu bırakıp tekrar evine dönmek ve bu ailede kadınlar çocuk yapamayacak duruma gelene kadar bu evlilikleri tekrar ediyor. Devon ilk evliliğinde çocuğunu bırakmak zorunda kalıyor ama ikinci evliliğinden olan çocuğunu bırakmıyor onun için savaşmaya bu düzene karşı gelmeye başlıyor. The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean - 5/5 ⭐ “For here was the thing that no fairy tale would ever admit, but that she understood in that moment: love was not inherently good.” Hidden across England and Scotland are six Book Eater Families; their numbers are dwindling, they live on the fringes of society, and eat books instead of food. Girl children are a rarity, with most of the children born being boys. So, when Devon’s second child is born both a boy and a Mind Eater - an eater of human minds instead of books - she runs away before he is either weaponised by the families as a Dragon, or killed. On the run, she must try and find the cure for her son’s hunger for human minds, a secret which is kept only by a family believed to have disappeared. If she doesn’t find it soon, her son may lose himself to the minds he eats, and the family she ran away from may catch up to her… I had a feeling from the very beginning that this book was going to be good - and yet it still managed to be even better than I had hoped. The world was engaging, the story kept me on the edge of my seat, and I grew to really enjoy following Devon’s story as she tried to navigate getting out of the world she had grown up in. I also really liked the writing style of this book; the prose was beautiful and, were this not a library book, there are many paragraphs I would have highlighted and tabbed in their entirety. This is definitely a book I’ll be re-reading in the future, perhaps even picking up my own copy so I can do all that annotating. As always when deciding whether or not to pick up a book, I recommend taking a look at the content warnings, but if it sounds like something you’d like to read, I definitely recommend checking this book out!

The story has really gripped me, and I’m keen to see where it goes. I’m also really liking the way it switches between two time periods, and how one informs the other. I have a few ebooks on Libby that I should probably start reading soon too, so maybe I’ll start one of them this weekend too. Then again, I want to do some writing & draft up some content for this account too, so maybe not 🤔 I guess time will tell

The author excels in creating an atmospheric setting that entices the imagination and sets the stage for a gripping narrative. From the outset, the vibes are immaculate! However, despite its strong start, the story ultimately fails to deliver on its initial promise. While the gothic aesthetic and eerie atmosphere are well-executed, the plot falls short of expectations. Instead of delving into the depths of its intriguing premise, the plot becomes stagnant and fails to sustain my interest. Unfortunately, the novel veers away from the trajectory that the synopsis entails, leaving me misled and unsatisfied. Overall, while "The Book Eaters" excels in establishing a captivating atmosphere and aesthetic, its downfall lies in its lacklustre plot. Despite its initial promise, the novel fails to deliver on its potential, leaving me wanting more. It's a regrettable case of a promising premise that ultimately falls flat. Happy Autism Awareness/Acceptance Day (and month)! I've been seeing so many wonderful posts today from so many wonderful people, so be sure to take some time to watch the videos and read the captions. 😊 Today, have a book review for a book by an autistic author! The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean is a wonderful, kind of creepy, and powerful fantasy story about creatures who survive by eating books. Except for the subset of them that must instead eat human minds to survive... Devon is a woman book eater trying to escape the world she was born into, a world where women are invaluable due to decreasing numbers of book eaters and whose sole duty is to marry and produce children. Their book diets are limited to fairy tales and other books the men in their lives deem appropriate, and they are kept in line by witnessing how their actions hurt the ones they care about most. This was such a good book! I read it only a couple months ago, and I loved every minute. It has such interesting worldbuilding and a powerful statement about patriarchy and how the books we read or have available to us can limit important information. Side note: this is also a sapphic book! I only warn you not to go in expecting a friendly, cozy chat about a love of books. This is borderline horror fantasy, but it has so much to say! Definitely one of my favorites this year. And on a more personal note... I am starting to strongly believe I am autistic. But I also don't have a formal diagnosis and have never been sure if I'm allowed to say that without one. The posts I've seen today suggest that I can, and so I'm saying it now. The more I learn about myself and how I interact with my world, the more I see that it is a strong likelihood. And it really does help explain so much, just like when I learned I was on the ace and aro spectrums. But enough about that. Moar booksss. - book eaters - finished this read last night, and i really enjoyed it! if ur looking for this book to really dive into book eating then you’ll be disappointed. i’ve seen a lot of reviews of the world building being wasted potential. but honestly i went into the book with an open mind and really liked the direction it took. it has a past and present storyline that meet in the middle which i really enjoyed, and i love the little quotes at the header of each chapter. the only thing i didnt like about the book was that i had a super hard time envisioning any of the characters or environments that were described - so i gave this book 4 stars ⭐️📚 #thebookeaters #sunyidean #tbr #bookreview #reading
For her “Book Eaters,” Sunyi Dean creates an environment that is ripe with gothic imagery reminding me of New Orleans—even though it’s set in England. While it was more monster-y than I usually like (with dragons and other human-adjacent creatures), I really enjoyed the world she created. I would have liked to have learned more about the mythology and history of the book eaters and mind eaters—two categories of creatures that were super unique and creative.
