Ktorá kniha vám robí spoločnosť? . Ja som sa konečne dostala k Perdidu. Pritom tvorba Chinu Miévilla ma lákala už dlhšie a nakoniec som sa rozhodla, že by bolo najlepšie začať práve od tejto knihy. Paradoxne som si ju kúpila a ešte skôr sa neplánovane dostala k An Lan Danu. A táto na mňa medzitým smutne pozerala z poličky. Fakt dlhé mesiace. . Ale teraz som ju konečne otvorila a hovorím si, že na toto človek potrebuje istý priestor. A hlavne určitý druh nálady. China Miéville nie je autor, ktorého by som dokázala čítať každý deň alebo ako voľnočasovku. Hoci áno, An Lan Dan bola skôr rozprávka. Hravá a viac-menej oddychová. Ale do Nového Krobuzonu by som radšej na dovolenku nechodila. Nie je to práve pozitívne miesto. Alebo tak na mňa aspoň zatiaľ nepôsobí. . V každom prípade, mám pocit, že toto je kniha, ktorá mi bude robiť spoločnosť dlhší čas. Je presne taká čudná, ako som očakávala. A to ma na nej baví. A ja si ju chcem vychutnávať pomaly a postupne. Recent Reads: • I finished reading Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher about a week ago. I enjoyed the overall story, however, I felt the writing style was quite simplified and the world building just didn’t really excite me. The pacing was quick and it’s a quick read but some of the more important ideas within fantasy, just didn’t hit for me. 3 stars. • I also managed to complete the finale of The Atlas Six: The Atlas Complex and it was more or less following the guides of the previous book, which I didn’t really enjoy. There were parts of the story that were enjoyable but it, overall, was underwhelming. The ending was a punch in the gut and not very satisfying, which is such a contrast to how the series started. I’ve rested on a solid 3 stars. • Perdido Street Station is one I just finished so my thoughts are a bit more fresh. This novel has all of the things: steampunk, new weird, fantasy and cyberpunk. The world building was incredibly strange but also phenomenally done. We get to see some mythological creatures with a twist as well as the contrast of futuristic machines and ancient practices. We also see some politics spilled in, being that Mieville is quite a radical Marxist (I did some research), we do get a negative view of the government. I do enjoy seeing political viewpoints within fantasy and often look out for it. This book was such a pleasant surprise, it already has me searching lists of Mieville’s other novels for another future read! If you enjoy scifi and weird fiction: try this one, I think you’ll like it! (5 stars!)
🫶🏽Happy Tuesday!!! I have made it halfway through Perdido Street Station and I am absolutely loving this book! It’s been the most wonderful surprise so far, it’s just such a fun read! The world is incredibly inventive with all kinds of interesting elements and characters. I have found myself eager to pick this back up and it’s one that is currently, very hard to put down. I read this whopper in 10 days - which is unheard of. I read a lot, but extremely slowly. But this one, this seemed like my kind of fantasy - finally. Then the second half happened. The first half made me wonder why David Cronenberg hadn't made a film out of it yet. It has all the body transformation horror, combined with a Terry Gilliam like cyber-steampunk city slum and fascinating creatures that are half human half insect, bird, cactus or toad. But it's the ideas that swept me away in the first half. You really didn't know where the journey was going to take you. There are simple cleaning robots that gain consciousness, there are people who can mold flesh with their hands, and then there's the main protagonist, a rogue scientist who's basically working on a perpetual motion machine. All of this is set up in detail in the first 400 pages. But then it turns into a 400 page long tedious monster hunt and I realised it's still "just fantasy". Also, although he uses a lot of fancy words, the style isn't poetic and introspective enough for me. Graphic Design II, Typographic Book Redesigns I got to really emphasize my range in these covers and experimented with different style choices to portray thematic elements. Perdido was exciting for me because the book is super steampunk heavy, i did a bunch of visual research in order to portray that vibe. I looove steampunk so I wanted to do it justice. The cow book was a vectored piece, my main struggle with that was making it interesting and it went through the most iterations. I settled for something more comedic hehe. My road book was most experimental, and it was the one book I actually read. Thinking back, the book’s setting is so burnt and ashy, and it keeps emphasizing that while you’re reading. I ran with that and decided on doing a photorastered piece, making my own shoeprint stamps and stamping into charcoal. As an artist/designer, the way you imagine things isn’t typically how they turn out, but this road cover was exactly how I envisioned it and it was super satisfying following through. 💕Happy Monday! Another week begins, and I’ve finished reading The Atlas Complex! 🎉 I didn’t really have high hopes with that one to start with but was eager to finish off the series. I’ve already started my next read: Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. This was recommended to me because of my love of Vandermeer novels. I was so excited that @thebrokennbinding released one of my favorite books from the early 2000s as a beautiful edition with digitally printed edges. Perdido Street Station is a mesmerizing blend of steampunk and magic. Locus ranked it as one of the best fantasy novels of the early 21st century! The book falls into the 'New Weird' subgenre of SFF, which is seen as a deliberate effort to move the genre away from Tolkien imitators. Have you read any New Weird books? Дитячі ілюстрації для недитячої літератури. Сьогодні розкажу про Чайна Мʼєввля і його Вокзал на вулиці Відчаю від видавництва @bohdan_books Це було нелегке читання, але дуже цікаве. Так, було дуже багато описів міста, світобудови, механізмів, додаткові описи вигаданих явищ, конкретних персонажів або просто згаданих мимохідь рас. Мені особливо сподобався опис роботи поштової системи в будівлі Парламенту, отримала дитячий захват. Крім того, в цьому Всесвіті чудово поєднуються такі явища як «тавматургія» (грубо кажучі магія, вміння впливати на обʼєкти силою думки) і технології (парові, механічні, або навіть вигадані) Мета автора, як мені відомо, зробити акцент саме на місті-державі Новий Кробузон і побудувати химерний сюрреалістичний світ навколо нього. Це відчувається з перших сторінок. Дуже імпонує як автор ламає всі стереотипи, очікування, показує наскільки широкою і безмежною може бути фантазія. Цей твір є прикладом такого рідкого і жаданого стімпанку! По канонам цього жанру повністю занурює нас в альтернативну «Вікторіанську» добу без прикрас. Можете бути впевнені, що почуєте навіть запах брудних вулиць і стічних канав. Крім того, відчуєте біль і проблеми різних рас громадян, знайдете багато паралелей з реальністю. Щодо персонажів, то вони настільки різні, що ти відчуваєш весь спектр емоцій, від нерозуміння і огиди до співчуття, поваги і навіть ніжності. За всією жорстокістю, брудом, насиллям і несправедливістю завжди можна розгледіти справжню дружбу, кохання, сміливість, відчуття спокою і свободу вибору. Роман може подобатись або ні, але майстерність автора не помітити просто неможливо. The Scar by China Miéville “Scars are not injuries, Tanner Sack. A scar is a healing. After injury, a scar is what makes you whole.” Back in the Bas-Lag I was excited to see what Mieville could cook up following the craziness of Perdido Street Station. Leaving New Crobuzon this time we’re aboard a floating pirate city called Armada. While we’re in a new location and follow a new cast of characters I do think you need to read Perdido before the Scar. The events are mentioned, but more importantly they serve as a motivation for one of our POVs and I don’t think Mieville spends as much time explaining what the remade are. Overall this was just as wild in terms of creatures, action and plot twists, and overall weirdness but I found myself missing the city setting. New Crobuzon felt so well developed and explored. But in terms of story telling Mieville definitely grew from the first book til this. It is much more tightly plotted and streamlined. Also I think the character work is better with Tanner Sack being a standout for me. Overall I didn’t like it as much as Perdido, but The Scar is definitely worth your time if you even slightly enjoyed the first book. Hello, and Happy World Book Day! 📖 Today, I am featuring three trilogies which I own in full, but which I have not started yet. The first is the Book of the Ice fantasy trilogy by Mark Lawrence. Book one, The Girl and the Stars, is likely to be my next read. This trilogy is set in the same world as Lawrence's excellent Book of the Ancestor trilogy, so I am confident that I am going to like this series too. The second trilogy featured is Of Blood and Bone by John Gwynne. I loved The Faithful and the Fallen, and this is set in the same world a few generations later, so I need to move this series up my TBR at some point! Finally, the wild card is the Bas-Lag trilogy by China Mieville. I rarely see any mention of this speculative fiction trilogy on Booksta, but a friend whose opinion I trust raves about this series. The first book is enormous, but at some point I will read it! Have you read any of these three trilogies and which would you recommend? Do you own any complete series which you have not started yet? #ChinaMiéville was instrumental in shaping much of the direction of my life, but I haven't read a new book by him in a long time, just rereading #PerdidoStreetStation again and again. #TheCity&theCity is an excellent microcosm of his style, ability, and philosophy. I've never had someone dislike a #Miéville book I've recommended, but they are usually quite long - The City & The City is only about 300 pages and thus maybe more approachable for some just trying to get into him. The book itself is a fast read and a bizarre mish-mash of #fantasy, #philosophy, and traditional detecting, but written in such a way that very swiftly the reader understands the strange rules of the world in such a natural way that it almost seems logical. It features many of the author's signature themes - government overreach, conspiracy, pyrrhic victories, fantastical naturalism... A great read for detective fiction fans who can stomach a pinch of the strange, fantasy readers who don't will allow some of the real world to bleed into their imaginary worlds, and philosophers with an admiration for the hypothetical.
Perdido Street Station I had a glowing review of this written about how I disliked this book when I tried it a few years ago, but now on a reread absolutely loved it… but it disappeared into the draft ether. Short and sweet. This book is weird, dark, gritty, stylized, and in your face with some of it messaging and themes. Regardless if you like it or not I think anyone who reads it will agree this book makes you think about it’s messaging and themes and have an opinion. I loved it. Can’t wait to read more from Mieville. This actually happened more than a week ago, but shortly afterwards I fell horribly ill and spent all of Lunar New Year in bed, so I’ve only just got around to posting about it. I wore my mother’s kebaya kota baru with garuda batik - readers of Miéville will recognise why this is relevant - along with @cllregoy’s Massimo Dutti skirt and snake earrings from @spindrift. I was afraid that around this time, the halfway mark, I’d start getting tired of the PhD, and I’m absolutely delighted to discover the opposite: I love my topic, I love the research process, I love teaching and going to seminars and learning, learning, learning every day. Italo Calvino wrote that ‘I segni nascosti sono da cercare, come i funghi’ (Hidden signs should be searched for, like mushrooms) and I’m so excited to find the next mushroom, the next sign, the next revelation, and see where that takes me. I'm in the mood for fantasy, but I have a love/hate relationship with the genre. I generally can't stand anything that's Tolkien-esque or otherwise lacking in original world building. My two favourites in recent times have been Perdido Street Station and Gideon The Ninth. Does anyone have any suggestions for something else that's a bit divorced from the usual genre tropes? In a city like New Crobuzon, extraordinary is the norm. Perdido Street Station was my first book from China Miéville. It's a work of dizzying depth, extraordinary world-building and polished prose. 📚Who's it for?📚 I'm usually not a fan of fantasy, but the gritty chaos really drew me in. Still, it's a long and dense read, best for an adult audience in dire need of escapism. 📚Summary📚 A rogue scientist is experimenting with chaos energy when an extraordinary request lands on his doorstep. A garuda whose wings were cut in punishment for a crime asks to fly again. Partway through his research to help the garuda, the scientist unleashes a plague upon the city. 📚Critique📚 ✨ New Crobuzon is a feat of imagination. The races, neighborhoods, gangs and government all fuse together to give the city amazing texture and feeling. ✨ The characters are diverse and interesting, with strong ideals and motivations. The Weaver in particular is a masterful example of how to introduce chaos into a story. ✨ The plot takes several turns and is full of exciting scenes ✨ I really enjoyed the writing style, with one caveat... ☁️...some of the word choice is needlessly complicated. There's a fine line between sounding smart and sounding like a thesaurus. This book crosses the line a few times. ☁️ The book doesn't need to be 210k words. Some of the side-plots go nowhere. ⛈️ I thought the ending was awful. Not only for the characters, but as a story. The author basically went, "Oh btw, here's why you should hate one of the main characters. Kthxbye." Great. Thanks. I'll just pretend the last section doesn't exist. Perdido Street Station (5⭐️). I found about this book after I went to the Fantasy exhibition at the British Library with my good friend @butterfly_pirouette. We agreed that we would get this and read the book together....I am so glad that we did! I had never heard of this book before, despite being an avid reader of fantasy fiction. I would say that this sits up there with other epic high fantasy stories such as Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. The level of intricate detail and imagination within this book is genius and makes reading the story an absolute dream. The mixture of different races, cultural backgrounds, political systems, social backgrounds and how they all meld together in the central city of New Crobuzon was done so intelligently that. I could believe this place, and all those who live there, actually existed. The story follws the main character Isaac Dan der Grimnebulin, a scientist, who is just trying to live as best a life as he can in the decaying world around him. Unbeknownst to him he unleashes an evil into his home city and gets dragged into trying to destroy it. As a result he gets thrown into a crazy adventure that takes Isaac and his companions to the highest levels of government and the lowest levels of the criminal world.
