Do you feel a sense of purpose and well-being in your job? Many women are tired of the old ways of working in traditional, rigid structures. We are craving finding something evolutionary and different - more flexible. We want to feel we’re contributing, both to our own sense of wellbeing, and to the community. Many of our Girls Journeying Together Facilitators had a successful corporate career – but were feeling burnt-out and looking for a sense of purpose. As part of #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we’ve been raising awareness about the unique struggles faced by women in the workplace, including their mental health. One of these women was Sophie. Sophie is a mother of two, living in South-West London. When she decided to train as a Girls Journeying Together Facilitator in 2018, she had already had a highly successful career in the financial industry. However, she was looking for a change, and work where she felt like she could give back to the community. So, she saw the training as an opportunity to make a difference to both mothers and girls at the transformational pre-teen age. Doing this work has given Sophie fulfilment and the power of connection, and it gives her a sense of tremendous satisfaction when she facilitates the programme. Additionally, as a mother, it has made her a better mother to her children. The training involves also delves into women’s work, ensuring the Facilitators can be fully present for the girls in the way they need them to be. Sophie also gained an incredible group of colleagues who are like sisters to her. And finally, she has a sense of satisfaction that she is creating a safety net within the community that supports and empowers girls as they deserve - which is safely into womanhood. Have you been hurt by people you trusted? Do you struggle to form new relationships because of past pain? Do you feel broken and hurt, wondering if God still loves you? Yes, God loves us unconditionally, despite our brokenness and hurt. His love is not based on our worthiness or perfection but on His own character and grace. The Bible says, "God is love" (1 John 4:8), and "He loves us with an everlasting love" (Jeremiah 31:3). I realized how deeply I was hurt only after I spoke up. I am not perfect, why try so hard to appear as such. I was only draining myself carrying burdens I could share. I tried to forget but I had a voice in my head constantly reminding me of the hurts. To avoid feeling that pain, I withdrew - a perfect plan till I broke down. I am healing and you can too. You can overcome that voice. All you need to do is keep repeating these: - God loves me unconditionally (1 John 4:10) - I am a child of God (John 1:12) - God is my Father, and He loves me (Romans 8:15) Also, practice self-love (God loves you so you have to love yourself), talk to someone about how you really feel, focus on God's goodness in your life, and replace negative thoughts with truth (positive affirmations) and pray for healing and strength. Healing is a journey, and it's okay to take your time. God's love is unconditionally patient, kind, and always available to support and guide you. Who the Son sets free is free indeed. TRIGGER WARNING Imagine your 6-year-old autistic child coming home distressed and telling you that they want to die. Some may say that I am being over-dramatic and not believe that this could actually happen. In reality, I am currently working with several families who are in this position, whose children verbalise their desire to die as they feel so out of control, so dysregulated, and so over-stimulated by life that they find it difficult to manage on a day-to-day basis. These children and young people are at breaking point and don't know what to do, these families are at crisis point because they do not know where to turn for help and support. This problem is real and I am not being over-dramatic. I hear children who speak about going to bed and hoping they don't wake up and they mean it. These children are not attention seeking as they so often get told - they are connection seeking and crying out for help, for someone to hear their desperate pleas. It is so important that we don't forget about autism and neurodiversity now that April is over and that we continue to fight for awareness and acceptance because if the neurotypical world was more welcoming, tolerant, accommodating and flexible then autistic children and young people may never feel so desperate that the only solution seems to be to die and leave it all behind. I know it's hard to hear and to listen to but it's so important that we stand up and talk about autism, about the rights of autistic children and young people within education, within the community, within our world. What are the biggest struggles that women face in the workplace? From burnout to impostor syndrome, there are a range of issues that contribute to statistics on working women’s mental health. Research has shown that working women are twice as likely to experience depression or Generalised Anxiety Disorder, with different factors that exacerbate this, from pay inequity microaggressions. Many women experience burnout at a rate higher than men – but is this exacerbated by unrealistic expectations placed on women? Women have the added pressures of balancing work with family, and high-pressure, leadership roles mean women often have to make big sacrifices. Women are often in charge of managing teams in work which can involve a lot of emotional pressure to 'take care of their team' through crises and challenges. This takes its toll in terms of time and energy. Work-life balance is also a key issue women struggle with, with the current hybrid or remote working climate bringing fresh challenges. Particularly affecting women of colour, it can create a sense of always being “switched on”, and struggling to draw boundaries with work - leading stress to seep over into personal life. In #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we're raising awareness around the unique struggles faced by women in the workplace, including their mental health. But what can we do about women’s mental health? Why might that be? 46% of working women report exhaustion compared to 38% of men (from a recent study from the McKinsey health institute) with women of colour even more affected. And women employees are struggling disproportionately with their mental health too – with 5% lower scores reported on mental health and 7% lower scores on spiritual health. The number of women in top-earning positions has increased from 17% in 2015 to 28% in 2023 (according to the World Economic Forum) but while the financial balance is improving, well-being does not seem to be. So that's a total of 11lbs gone in 2 weeks! I'm beyond happy today 😊 I've also made the decision to delete all my previous posts from when I lost weight 6 years ago. I found myself just scrolling back and getting sad whenever I saw the posts so to keep me focused on the now I've archived them all. What to do if you can't sleep, according to DBT therapy: If you are calm but wide awake, DBT wise mind says to get out of bed and go to another room. You can read a book, have a light snack like an apple, or engage in another calming activity. Once you feel sleepy, go back to bed and try again. If you are anxious or ruminating, you can try one of the following: -Use the cold water TIP skill, then get right back in bed and do the paced breathing TIP Skill. -Do the 9-0 meditation practice: Take a deep breath. When you exhale, count “9.” Take another breath. When you exhale count “8.” Continue breathing deeply and count down to “0,” then start over again at “9.” Repeat until you fall asleep. -Be mindful of how the rumination feels in your body. -Reassure yourself that the ruminations are just “middle-of-the-night” thinking, and you’ll feel different in the morning. -Read an emotionally engrossing novel for a few minutes. Then close your eyes and try to continue the novel in your head. -If the rumination doesn’t stop, here are the rules–If it’s solvable, solve it now. If it’s not solvable, practice the DBT skill, cope ahead. According to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), these are the steps to good sleep hygienes: -Develop and follow a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. And no naps longer than 10 minutes! -Don’t use your bed in the daytime to watch TV, work, or play with your phone. -Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, heavy meals, and exercise late in the day. -At bedtime, keep the room dark and quiet and the temperature cool and comfortable. -Give yourself 30-60 minutes at most to fall asleep. If it doesn’t work, evaluate whether you are calm, anxious, or ruminating. -DO NOT CATASTROPHIZE. Remind yourself that staying awake is not a catastrophe. We could work on-the-go, connect, watch videos, find our way, and we had Google in our pocket. All very appealing for most, but not good news for our children. Smartphones are inadvertently damaging their mental health. Depression and suicide in children has rocketed since 2012. Why?
