Imbolc Blessings everyone! As it is Imbolc, we took our children out for a short run around this morning. We managed to find a few Snowdrops, Winter Aconite and even some early Sweet Violets! Imbolc, aka Imbolg, Feast of Brighid, Lá Fhéile Bríde, Feast of Many Candles(Candlemass), is a Cross-Quarter & Fire Festival in the Celtic and Pagan religions. It is celebrated on February 1st-2nd at 15 degrees Aquarius (August 1st-2nd at 15 degrees Leo for the southern Hemisphere), occupying the time between the winter solstice & spring equinox. One way I like to organize sabbats & traditions is by their correspondences. These are fun for me, ‘cause they remind me of a time when I was a child & making the color, plant, & animal designations a fun activity to symbolize the current holiday. Imbolc represents the quickening(awakening) of the earth & the anticipation of spring. It is a time to celebrate making it through the darkest & hardest times of winter. It is a celebration of new things to come. My drawing above represents a few of the main correspondences with Imbolc. Items that hold special meaning for me for this time of year. Imbolc has a direction of NE on the pagan calendar & water is it’s main element. If Imbolc were to be represented by a single symbol it would be a candle. This brings us straight to the Goddess Brigid (aka Brighid, Brigit, Bride (pronounced Breed), & Brigitantia). She is the Goddess of the Eternal Flame & has been a long standing Goddess of Ireland, but also recognized in Scotland, Wales, & many parts of Western Europe. Brigid is a goddess of the fire & flame, but also of change, poetry, inspiration, transformation, wisdom, metal working, the fires of the forge, creativity as a whole, water, prophecy, education & learning &, is credited to giving the written word to humanity. She’s been called the “Great Teacher” Goddess of the Well & seen as a goddess protector of childbirth, keeping both the mother & child safe during the birthing process. It’s no wonder she is a highly recognized goddess. Brigid’s powers as a shapeshifter represent all three versions of the Goddess in her maiden, mother & crone forms. Imbolc marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Celebrations start on the eve of 1st of February and last until the eve on the 2nd February. It is a pre-Christian celebration and marks the return of the light after the winter. 🌞 The Romans celebrated Februalia and Christians adopted this celebration, calling it Candlemas 🕯️which is celebrated on 2nd of February. It is believed that the Roman and the Christian festival have their roots in the Imbolc celebration. Candles and bonfires play a big part in this celebration, symbolising purification and the return of the light. In many alpine regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland 🏔️ it is tradition to have your Christmas tree 🎄 until the day of Candlemas. On that day the Christmas tree and lights are taken down and packed away. People get together to light big fires 🔥 and take candles 🕯️ to church ⛪️ to get them blessed. One of my family traditions on Imbolc is to put away the Christmas tree. We leave the branches of the tree to dry and use them the following year to light a fire to celebrate Imbolc. We sprinkle the ashes in the garden and around trees to honour the fertile soil. Another beautiful way to celebrate Imbolc is to light a candle 🕯️ and to write down your dreams, hopes or goals for the coming year on a piece of paper and hold it tight between your palms - almost like planting a seed that will grow throughout the year. Sit with the intention of hope and energy of Imbolc. 🔥🌞🌱

Meet Imbolc, the 6th doll in my Wheel of the Year series. Imbolc was originally a pagan festival associated with the lambing season and the goddess Brigid who is associated with fertility blessings, poetry, crafts, and prophecy. Historians suggest that the saint and her feast day are Christianizations of these. It marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. A possible etymology for Imbolc is an Old Irish word meaning 'in the belly', referring to the pregnancy of ewes at this time of year. The timing of the festival may have been more fluid in the past and coincided with the onset of the lambing season and preparation for sewing crops in the spring. In Gaelic tradition, Imbolc was believed to be when the Cailleach gathers her firewood for the rest of the winter. Legend has it that if she wishes to make the winter last longer, she will make sure the weather on Imbolc is bright and sunny so that she can gather plenty of firewood. Therefore, people would be relieved if Imbolc was a day of foul weather, as it meant the Cailleach is asleep and winter is almost over. Today, St Brigid's Day and Imbolc are observed by Christians and non-Christians. Some people mark the day by making Brigid's crosses and Brigid Corn Dollies (or Brideogs), or visiting holy wells dedicated to St Brigid. More recently, Irish embassies have hosted yearly events on St Brigid's Day to celebrate the achievements of women. Some of the symbols of Imbolc I have included in my doll are snow drops - one of the first flowers of spring, a lamb and a corn dolly.
