The first day of may is not an ordinary spring day. Our ancestors knew this and reliably celebrated this moment of the year at night, considering it the symbolic first day of summer. For the Celts, the night from April 30 to May 1 was associated with the Beltane, when the "old" winter fire was doused in household fires (it was believed that the earth was covered with darkness at this time and it is the time of dead) and re-lit from the Beltane fire. The ancient Germans celebrated the same night as Walpurgis Night - the kind of the witches' Sabbath, the night of evil spirits, during which the most famous rituals took place on Mount Brocken in honor of Hel - goddess of death. Speaking of the Mount Brocken, the name Brocken spectre is still used today, denoting an optical illusion that appears in the mountains in specific conditions and, according to superstition, means death for the person who saw it. In Slavic tribes tradition it was time of spring Dziady celebrations also referring to the spirits of dead ancestors and holiday of Vesna, goddess of youth and springtime. In numerous slavic languages the word spring is originated from Vesna - e.g. polish wiosna. Anyway, May 1 in European pagan traditions is the time of the Sun's triumph over the darkness, and I need to say this year the Sun really triumphed. In Poland, the temperature reached almost 30 degrees Celsius for the first time this year. May 1st. Beltane. Beltane is a pagan holiday and one of the top four of the eight sabbats. You've probably heard or seen celebrations of people dancing with ribbon around a May pole, flowers in their hair, etc. These are Beltane traditions. A festival of fertility, for both people and the earth, celebrating spring, new beginnings, new life, and the growing season. Similar to the way the autumn sabbat of Samhain has watch for the wandering souls of the dead, Beltane is a day when the fairies wander about. But what's the history? I know you're on the edge of your seat waiting to know 😂, so without further ado, let's get into it: In early Irish history, the year was split into two main seasons. Winter, the beginning of the year, fell on November 1st (Samhain) and midyear, or summer on May 1st (Beltane). The name is derived from the word meaning Bel-Fire, or the fire of the God of Light (Bel, Beli, or Belinus). Traditionally, Beltane festivities began days before May 1st or "May Day," when villagers traveled into the woods to gather the nine sacred woods (rowan, briar, oak, alder, holly, elder, birch, aspen and yew) needed to build the Beltane bonfires. Because the Celtic day started and ended at sundown, the Beltane celebration would begin at sundown on April 30th. After extinguishing all hearth fires in the village, two Beltane fires were lit on hilltops. The villagers would drive their livestock between the fires three times, to cleanse them and insure their fertility in the coming summer, and then put them to summer pasture. After the livestock had been successfully protected, the human fertility ritual would begin. Dancing around the bonfires would continue through the night, and customary standards of social behavior were relaxed. Young couples would sneak into the woods or into the fields to "celebrate" this day of fertility. *wink wink* When the Christian tradition of monogamous marriage replaced handfasting, a new Beltane tradition began: all marriage vows were temporarily suspended for the festival. Tonight the veil between worlds grows thin and the witches gather atop The Brocken to dance with the devil. The springtime winds carry the whispers of their spells of healing and renewal across the land. The modern celebration of Walpurgisnacht is named for Saint Walpurga, a Christian missionary, but it came from pagan traditions. Similar to Celtic Beltane traditions, the original holiday used bonfires and maypoles to celebrate springtime fertility and ward off malevolent spirits who want to prolong winter’s hold on the world. When Christianity was brought to Germany the missionaries used syncretism to fold previous pagan traditions in with Christian beliefs and attempted to reframe this celebration around saintly protection from evil. It continued to be a significant pagan celebration, just under the guise of a Catholic feast day, and still is. Today is my birthday so it feels right to post again! 🥳️ Let me tell you a bit about Yarilo and St. George/Sv. Juraj. We celebrated St. George’s Day a few days ago, but it's never too late to share this fascinating legend. Numerous Slavic pre-Christian traditions and beliefs are interwoven and interpreted in the Croatian folk customs of St. George's Day (April 23). St. George's Day is a true spring, shepherd's and farmer's holiday. The customs of lighting bonfires, decorating livestock with greenery and the procession of Jurjaši, Đurđari, and Zeleni Jura (Green Jura/George) are widespread, especially in northwestern Croatia. Greenery symbolizes spring, so St. George takes the form of a walking green bush made of young birch branches. It represents the awakening of nature and the beginning of a new farming year. In the evening, the bonfire is lit. It is believed this fire is magical and has cleansing and protective powers. In the Christian tradition St. George is depicted as a warrior who kills a dragon. The Slavic deity who hides under the name of Sv. Juraj/St.George is Perun's son - Yarilo. Yarilo, as well as St. George/Juraj/Zeleni Jura, brings fertility to nature precisely in the second half of April, when the feast of St. George is held. Thus, in a long-term process, traditions were mixed and new ones were created: the Slavic worship of Yarilo turned into the worship of St. Juraj. I hope this wasn’t too complicated. I tend to get carried away when I talk about these things. Here’s a lovely folk song about this mysterious and beautiful feast: Lepi Juro kres nalaže, na Jurjevo, na Jurjevo.
