Lá Fhéile Bríde Shona Daoibh! Happy Imbolc! Most people celebrate Imbolc on the first or second of February, but I celebrate on its astrological date (the exact date between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox). This year, that was the fourth of February (today). My celebration started with me decorating pages in my spiritual journal, coming up with a tarot spread for the holiday, and preparing to follow along with the Imbolc ritual from the @irish.pagan.school . I highly recommend their school for anyone interested in authentic Irish Paganism! I followed along with the ritual on my laptop, then conducted my tarot reading. For the reading, I used a combination of the Illustrated Bestiary Oracle deck and the Cosmic Slumber Tarot (one of my favorite decks). I recorded in my journal what I experienced in my meditation during the ritual, as well as my interpretation of my reading. I offered a glass of milk to Bríd and closed the ritual. Go raibh míle maith agat, a Bhríd! Then, my family and I played board games! Midwinter ❄️💫 Midwinter, also celebrated as Imbolc and Candlemas, is the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Traditionally this time of year was observed by feasting to the change of the season, honoring the goddess Brigid, and later St. Brigid, and celebrating the coming return of spring. One way to honor Brigid was to bake oat cakes or bannocks in hopes that leaving the cakes would win the favor of her good health and prosperity for the upcoming season. This year I made traditional Scottish oat cakes to celebrate Midwinter. As dairy was also often eaten during this time of year, I made lemon curd to dollop on top of the oatcakes for added sweetness. They turned out really earthy and simple tasting, and the bright lemon curd added a burst of sweetness reminiscent of the coming sunshine and spring. ☀️ Happy Midwinter! How are you celebrating? Imbolc means “in the belly” and celebrates the pagan Celtic goddess Brigid, the goddess of inspiration and creativity and healing. Imbolc has been celebrated for many years as a time to reaffirm life and set intentions for the coming harvest season. As Christianity spread from Rome to northern Europe and the British Isles Imbolc was adopted as Candlemass, still celebrated on February 2. Imbolc falls exactly halfway between the Winter Solstice (Yule) and the Spring Equinox (Ostara). Daylight is increasing and spring is the air. While too early for planting gardens, Imbolc is a time to start thinking about the seeds you wish to plant for the year ahead. Blessed Imbolc!! The first flowers of the Spring are here! Earth is getting warmer so little plants can grow their little bodies to become full grown in Spring and Summer. I saw a little broken flower today, it just started growing it’s first leaves and someone cut them all and threw them away. So it was left so bare and broken , without its first leaves that it made me cry. But the little flower kept growing new leaves from under the broken ones. Maybe it had a rough start and was broken at birth but the light of the life force was strong in this one, maybe it will be more difficult for it than for others but it will grow big as well to bloom with beautiful flowers. Imbolc A festival that marks the coming of spring and the return of the sun. In all honesty, yesterday was ‘one of those days’ too many thoughts flying around my head and feeling a bit bleurgh so I’m posting this a day later than I wanted to, but… life, children, husbands (thank God it’s only one actually!) are a thing. I found a small window of time though and indulged myself in rearranging my bureau. A beeswax candle & yellow strawflowers to represent the returning strength of the sun and chamomile and lavender bath salts to represent cleansing and renewal. A small sanctuary in an otherwise chaotic house. It's helped me focus on brighter days to come. Signs of spring are brewing outside too. Catkins dangling from the branches, snowdrops raising their delicate blooms above the earth. No wild garlic here yet, but plenty of foragers in other areas of the UK have spotted young shoots. Returning home to a parcel from Trina @in_the_foragers_garden raised my spirits too. All Hail Brigid! Happy Imbolc to this beautiful Brigid's Day/Imbolc baby, my magical maternal grandmother Catherine Elvira Woodling, who taught me my first herbs/flowers, gave me my first book of native american herblore, and spend countless hours in the kitchen telling me stories of our ancestors and her childhood as a wild creature of the fields & woodlands! She supported me and cheered me on as writer/bard from earliest stories and songs of witches and noble knights as a wee lass, to my experimental rap phase a teen, to my weirdest wildest theatrical experimentations and protest art in my twenties. She's been one of my biggest fans and one of my steadiest allies and adventure buddies. She spend the night and often visited the weird haunted hotel/artist commune where I used to live. She even lovingly crotcheted baby blankets and clothes for my friends there, and befriended the raven who came to visit us there occasionally and would happily sit on her shoulder. The two of us traveled by train across the country & back once where she, in her 80s, climbed mountains in Flagstaff, hiked the Grand Canyon, made friends on the Hopi reservation, danced for 4 days in Ojai California as a 5 Rhythms retreat, and then cruised the California coast where we both got to swim with seals and boat amongst a pod of Orcas and watch them play. I'm so happy that I've got to share so much of my life with this beautiful woman who survived & thrived against so much grief as one of the most impoverished members of our society: a poor white person in Appalachia's coal country. Her maternal grandfather was a native man of our area, who she wasn't able to get too close to, but she carries his blood and the wisdom a people who settled in the Laurel Highlannds in the late 1700s and made it their home. I am proud of her and honored to carry on her lineage...as well as Brigid who has blessed us both well. In honor of Brigid, I penned a new invocation last yesterday before my vigil. I'm sharing it with you on this most auspicious of day in my next post.
