Tending the Ancestral Flame of the Beloved Celtic Goddess Stories, spells, rituals, and recipes celebrating the worldwide influence of this beloved Celtic goddess Brigid, with contributions from Laura Tempest Zakroff, Courtney Weber, and many others. This anthology celebrates Brigid, an ancient and mysterious Celtic spirit who ranks among today’s most popular modern goddesses. Venerated in many forms including as a saint and a goddess, Brigid has traveled the globe alongside the Celtic diaspora. Once a goddess with a narrow territory, she is now an internationally beloved presence. While acknowledging her origins, this book also explores Brigid from the perspective of those outside her original Celtic homeland. Editors Cairelle Crow and Laura Louella have gathered art, poetry, stories, spells, rituals, recipes, and traditions as an homage to Brigid’s magic and lore, especially among the descendants of immigrants to the Americas. 🔥LINK IN BIO🔥 Just tap to shop!

First off, I want to apologize for my lack of content, it seemed that Apollo didn't answer my praying phone calls to keep me healthy from the spring flu (even tho he kind of owes me for writing that post about him😒) but whatever, Im feeling better enough to finally write again. To continue our journey of Celtic myths and folklore, in pre-Christian medieval Ireland times, we have Brighid. Brighid is the goddess of spring, fertility, and life. She is also known as the master of healing and smithing and is the patron goddess of Leinster. She is associated with compassion, love of animals, and care for people. She is also the patron goddess of women in childbirth. She appears in Irish mythology as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Irish Pantheon of gods. Brighid was a goddess who was worshipped by poets according to Cormac's Glossary, written in the 9th century by Christian monks. She is believed to have had two sisters - Brighid the healer and Brighid the smith - which suggests that she was possibly a triple deity. There is also a connection between Brighid and the British Celtic goddess Brigantia. The Lebor Gabála Érenn, also known as The Book of Taking Ireland, mentions that Brighid is the daughter of the Dagda, the ancient God of the Celts and Druids. Like her father, Brighid has a special relationship with Druids who worship her and serve as her messengers. Interestingly, Brighid being associated with poets and crafts, In Roman mythology and culture, she is linked to Minerva, who embodies the same qualities. Brighid as the goddess of fire ruled over smith's fire as well as the hearth-fire, and her temples contained a sacred flame watched over by a company of virgin priestesses, much like those of the temples of Vesta in Rome. Historians suggest that the Christian saint Brigid of Kildare was syncretized with the goddess Brighid, with the Christian monks taking the ancient figure of the mother goddess and associating her name and functions with their patron saint. Saint Brigid is considered to be the patroness of the same professions the Goddess Brighid rules over

Brighid Healing Girdle This is a very special womb healing girdle I created for Holly. She told me that during her cancer she had surgery to remove her womb and all the ‘accessories’ as she called them. Holly felt very vulnerable in her womb area afterwards and would at night put a string of beads, a healing group of ladies made for her around her womb. Holly said that it was a time of reawakening. Brighid the lady of light and so many wonderful gifts have opened up in herself that she had forgot about. ‘As if my old self that I left behind remembered….’ Holly ordered a Brighid healing girdle from me and it was an honour to create this sacred belt for her. Brighid is one of the greatest Goddesses of healing and she brings wholeness and balance to us. The legend goes that she had a girdle that could heal all diseases. As her devoted daughter I was guided to create and weave girdles for spiritual womb healing. Many indigenous cultures around the world use cloths & belts to tie around the womb for physical as well as emotional support. (You can find much more info on my website - link in bio) Woven out of cotton, a British wool mix, merino and silk, adorned with sheep locks and a hand carved healing steatite stone goddess. Thank you dear Holly @underthefaerietree for allowing me to tell your story and weaving in the healing magic ✨ 🙏❤️ #wovenmedicine #healing #girdle #wombhealing #wombmagic #prayershawl #brighid #brighidgoddess #priestess #goddesshealing #wearablemagic #handwovenwrap #sacredfeminine #goddess

🌿🕯Brigid's Cross🕯🌿 🌿The three armed cross is the most ancient of the variations of brigidtine crosses. It can be traced to at least the early neolithic (7000 B.C.), where it can be found painted and carved extensively on pottery, figurines, bowls, vases, and stamp seals. 🕯The image was found with symbols and ritual objects related to earthen fecundity, the sown field, and regeneration. It is thus believed that the cross represents the cyclical phases and seasons that plants and animals must move through to ensure perpetual renewal and wholeness. 🌿 It is essentially a succinct symbol of life itself. 🕯Making a Brigid's cross is an ancient folkcustom of the Imbolc season. Folk collect rushes and place them outside their home, on the window sill or porch. As Brigid passes by on her sacred night, she blesses the rushes by her presence. In the morning, the rushes are woven into a cross and placed above the cradle, in the cow house, above the doorway, nailed to the roof or anywhere that was thought Brigid's blessings were needed. 🌿These crosses are considered absolutely sacred and are used throughout the year to heal illness and perform blessings. On the next Imbolc, the previous years' cross would be burned, and the ashes thrown about the newly plowed fields to bring blessings and fertility 🕯As always, there is so much more I would like to say about these humble and sacred folk charms. There are enough legends and customs associated with Brigid Crosses to fill a book but here is a little glimpse 🌿blessed Imbolc

Brighid Healing Girdle Brighid is one of the greatest Goddesses of healing and she brings wholeness and balance to us. The legend goes that she had a girdle that could heal all diseases. An old story tells of Brighid meeting a poor woman with many children who were destitute and ill. Brighid healed the woman and the children and then gave the woman her girdle and told the woman to go and cure others with it. Most of you will probably know by now that I am dedicated to Brighid and today I finished my first woven healing girdle. I created a braided girdle during the first year of my priestess training but I longed for a handwoven big belt which would easily cover my womb and hips. A girdle in which I would feel protected and safe, a girdle I would feel Brighid’s compassion, her healing power and ancient womb wisdom. Now during Imbolc it seemed the right time to create my own Brighid healing girdle. For this I spun fleeces from this land, combined it with red recycled silk (as a symbol for Brighid’s fire), adorned it with beautiful Wensleydale locks. I carved out of soapstone a little goddess figurine in which I also carved the Brighid cross. Wearing the carved goddess over my belly feels also grounding and deeply relaxing. Soapstone is a very calming and magical stone and I love carving it. This girdle is for me my womb healer, I never really forgave ‘her’ because she left me with three angel babies but no children. I also blamed her for excessive pain during my moon blood times (which I sadly never experienced as sacred) and for many other reasons. Now that I hold my sacred blood inside me it’s time to forgive and heal and for this I welcome wearing my Brighid Healing Girdle. Please contact me if you are interested. I also offer stone carving courses in Glastonbury if you would like to create your own little goddess heads or statues. Please check my website site: www.michaelacordes.com@for more info

"The Poet's Friend," last year's offering to Brighid, saved to share this Imbolc. In the intervening year, I've learned that "Brighid" might be more of a title than a name, a designation for a particular type of Goddess. If true, the various Brighids might not necessarily be the 'same' being... regardless, we revere them all, especially at this time. #poetry #bardic #originalpoem #originalart #Irish #Celtic #Brighid #brighidgoddess #Imbolc #Oimelc

Brighid is the Irish triple Goddess of smithcraft, healing, and poetry. She is much associated with fire (as well as water), and is credited with inventing beer. She has Her roots in the British Goddess Brigantia and the Gaulish Goddess Brigando. Her name means 'Exalted One' or 'High One' and the Romans always linked Her with their Minerva, though I'm not entirely sure why. The festival of February 1st (Imbolc) is Hers, when She is said to bring the springtime. Candles, as here, are much associated with Her. She's shown here as a healer, shielding the candle flame that represents the soul. #thaliatook #goddessart #womensart #femaleartist #femalepainter #womanartist #goddesspaintings #healinggoddess #healing #bride #brighid #brighidgoddess #celticgoddess #irishgoddess

💧Keening our grief with Brigid💧 There is plenty said around Imbolg about Brigid’s many aspects: fertile Maiden of Spring, goddess of Sunlight, Spark of Life in the belly of the Mother after the long Winter. Brigid of holy wells and healing hands; the hands that weave rushes, mend wounds and bring new babes into the world also pound and craft metal in the fires of Her forge. Brigid of beer, bread and butter. Brigid the poet, bard, sorceress, imbuer of Imbas, midwife to all areas of domestic living. And She is all these things. But Brigid has also wept💦 When Her son Ruadan, from Her union with Bres, was killed during the Second Battle of Mag Tuired (Moytura), Brigid was undone by her grief. The primal force of Her mourning was transmitted through a sound so fervent with anguish that the battle raging around Her came to a standstill. This was the first wailing (keening) of its kind heard in Ireland. Brigid’s keening created a rite of passage through which Her grief could be fully expressed; literally teaching how to mourn. Keening acts as a clear channel to convey the pain of those mourning while also guiding the soul of the departed into the Otherworld. Among Her many epithets, Brigid also takes on the role of psychopomp, helping spirits transition from one realm to the next. There is as much to grieve in the world as there is to celebrate~ Brigid is with us through all of it. She rejoices in the returning Sun, spreads Her green mantle and causes Snowdrops to spring up in Her footsteps. She encourages us to transform what needs changing in our lives, to tend our home, to allow inspiration to move us to creation, to share what we have and help those in need. Brigid also grieves as we grieve: a parent losing a child, a compassionate being mourning the deaths of innocents and the destruction wrought by war. The gods we feel closest to are those who allow themselves to weep💧Brigid keens for the land and all its people, holds the full spectrum of emotion in Her belly, and offers comfort to all those seeking guidance through the liminality of loss.

Come potrò riconoscerti, amato Dio! ...." Oh Wow ! The sunlight today was so incredibly powerful ! Not to mention the Amethyst and Rose Quartz sky at sunset ! It was such a treasure collecting dew drops early this morning ( for my Purify & Protect Aura spray, it’s on my Website if you would like one? ) Especially because it was IMBOLC !The first time I ever felt the powerful energy of Imbolc was 7 years ago, when I lost everything ! It seamed ? A dark night of the soul, we could say! I was floored literally ! And managed to crawl into my garden and nestle under the hawthorn in my garden sinking into the Earth ! Curled up in the comfort of the Great Mother cradling me. As I almost fell asleep on the Earth in emotional exhaustion under the Hawthorn tree. I literally felt this buzzing beneath me , it was pulsating . It felt like surges of energy underneath my body ! I looked up slowly , and noticed little snowdrops almost singing to me !!! They looked so beautiful and happy . This new life, energy expressing itself through little snowdrops. A reminder saying “You made it through , after a long, dark winter, It’s going to be okay ! Trust and Surrender ! To me they bring a message of hope! They are so delicate and beautiful , their white colour reminds me of our true nature and purity. But also they bring strength and courage to break through the hard frozen earth ! Brighid the Goddess of Imbolc is always working her magic at this time! Imbolc Blessings to all 🌷💖🌷 #imbolcblessings #brighidgoddess #energy #paganfestival #dewdrops #magic #snowdrops #welcomethelight #fae #fairies

Imbolc blessings folks! This is my representation of Brighid/Bridget/Brid/Bride/Brigdu/Brigit the Bright One. The Goddess of Healers, Poets, Smiths, Childbirth and Inspiration (so many reasons to love her!); she is also the patron of the Fire and the Hearth, and warfare, or "Briga" (where we get the terms "brigands" from, for soldiers). As were many Celtic/Pagan gods, so dear to the hearts and souls of the people was she that she was adopted into Christianity and 'transformed' into a Saint, known as the "noble foster mother of Christ". She is not only a protector of newborn babies, but also of animals and the land. Her festival is Imbolc, the midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. This is the turning point for many of us who find the dark winter days a struggle. She heralds the awakening of inspiration, just as the first stirrings of Spring are felt with the arrival of snowdrops in our gardens. I personally am invoking her to bring her firey focus to my work which is sorely needed after a week of moving and shifting, reorganising and Spring cleaning - ie, next level high functioning procrastination! More about all that in another post soon... I have 5 copies of a limited edition print if Brighid left on my website 😉 link in bio. 🌱🔥🌦 #imbolc #imbolcblessings #brighid #brighidgoddess #brigit #lucycampbellprints #LupiArt #pagangoddess

The stirring is coming ✨ On this day, we honor and celebrate Brighid. Goddess, Saint, Activist, Healer, Community Herbalist, Tender of the Hearth and the Forge. 🔥 On this day we feel the stirring of the spring, the gentle and ever so subtle awakening of the earth. We honor, celebrate, and delight in the return of the Sacred Light, and reflect on how we’ve kept the flame alive through the Winter. Brighid is deeply important as a guide and spirit in my relationship to herbalism, and particularly my relationship to community healing. Brighid stood up for those who are oppressed, practiced and was a leader in reciprocity, & stood in her power, to the point she was so beloved and revered she was transformed with the rise of Christianity and was recognized in Sainthood. She is a keeper of both/and and reminds us of the sacred in two things being true at the same time. Tonight I will put out a blue shawl I have been crafting so that it may be blessed with her healing breath, and will be a beautiful tool I use in meditation and ritual. May you all be blessed by Brighid this day, and may she remind us of our internal flame. May she help us stand in our power so that we may tend to our communities and speak up against injustice today and all days. #FreePalestine . . . . #Imbolc #Brighid #BrighidsDay #brighidgoddess #brighidscross #brighidflame #sacredflame #sacredlight #wheeloftheyear #springiscoming #nature #seasons #goddess #returnofthelight #communityherbalist #herbalism #herbalist #ancestralhealing #ancestralherbalism

Blessed Imbolc to you all🕯 Today little N and Mommy spent the day celebrating Imbolc in very simple ways, honouring the Goddess Brigid. We declutter and tidy our lovely home and our trunk of Witchy stuff, reorder all our crystals, reorganise the Altar making space for a depiction of Brigid and a candle lighted for her and the return of the Light. We ate rye bread and milk, which are sacred to her, recited prayers and poetry for Brigid, listened to wiccan music and sang our favourite Witchy songs. We're going to cast some Spells together later in the day, after recovering a bit if our energies. Imbolc means In The Belly, and I can only remember with so much love and nostalgia this time of last year, when I was pregnant and little N had already been In My Belly for only a couple of weeks. It was such an emotional time of our life and I will forever treasure it in my heart. The Winter is still here, but we're half way through to Spring, Hope is arising, days are getting longer, lights are slowly returning and animals are waking up. It's a good time to start planning for our garden, what we want to plant when the weather is a bit warmer and the Sun returns, as well as deciding what to plant for the year ahead, what we want to harvest at the end of the year, welcoming new blossoms and letting go of what no longer serves us. From the Warm of our Home, we wish you all a Cozy Imbolc and lots of light 🔥 Blessed Be 🕯 #imbolc #imbolcblessings #imbolcaltar #imbolcmagic #imbolc2024 #imbolcholiday #imbolccelebration #imbolclight #candelora #candlemas #brigid #goddessbrigit #goddessbrigid #brighidgoddess #brigantia #deabrigid #candlemagick #candlewitch #wheeloftheyear #wiccanholiday #wiccanprayer #witchcraftlife #witchcraft #witchstyle #witchyholidays #wiccanlife #paganholiday #paganwitchcraft #witchesofinstagram🔮🌙 #pagansofinstagram

Goddess Inspiration Oracle Brigit Today is the feast of St. Brigit. Celtic people of long ago pleaded with St. Brigit for the divine spark; the fire of inspiration. In Scotland Brigit was seen in the form of a beautiful white swan, as elusive as inspiration itself. She was called the fiery arrow because she was associated with the art of making something which uses the alchemical tool of fire which transforms base metals into valuable objects. Brigit's sacred holiday, is the 1st of February, Imbolg. To receive her wisdom many would hang a white wool cloth outside on the eve of Imbolg, believing it would absorb the energy of the goddess. They would set this sanctified cloth aside to be called into service when inspiration was needed. February 1 is also the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox. Feasts still are celebrated in honor of St. Brigit. In the last decade or so, I've come to relate to thresholds we pass through in the seasons more deeply. They help ground me, so I don't feel like I'm just zipping through life unawares of deeper rhythms that flow around us and through us. This intention has helped me tremendously when it comes to being with grief and joy, love and anguish. I see in the goddess Brighid this most amazing confluence of symbols that land on the solid ground of wholeness and balance. Do you have ways you connect with the rhythms of nature that help you travel the roads of grief and love? #thelonggriefjourney #sourcebooks #grief #griefjourney #imbolc #healingnature #mentalhealth #brighidgoddess

Blessed Imbolc! 🐑 ☀️ 🌱 🥛 ❄️ The word “imbolc” means “in the belly of the Mother,” because the seeds of spring are beginning to stir in the belly of Mother Earth. The term “oimelc” means ewe’s milk. Around this time of year, many herd animals give birth to their first offspring of the year, or are heavily pregnant. As a result, they are producing milk. This creation of life’s milk is a part of the symbolic hope for spring. This holiday also celebrates Brigid, the Celtic fire and fertility goddess. Over the years, Brigid was adopted by Christianity as St. Brigid. Brigid (or Bridget) is the patron saint of Irish nuns, newborns, midwives, dairy maids and cattle. The stories of St. Brigid and the goddess Brigid are very similar. Both are associated with milk, fire, the home, and babies. To celebrate Imbolc, some modern day pagans focus on celebrating Brigid. They do this by setting up an altar with the symbols of Brigid, like a corn husk doll, white flowers, a bowl of milk, and candles. If there is a group gathering, they might cast a circle, and recite a prayer to receive a blessing from Brigid. Other pagans aim their rituals towards the cycles of the season. Some people do house cleaning rituals as a part of getting ready for spring. Other families find a pile of snow, gather some musical instruments, and chant to drive away the winter. -Dhruti Bhagat WitchWoodEmporium.com

Who Is Brigid? The goddess Brigid. Brigid is a fertility goddess. She rules the fire of the hearth as well as the fire of imagination through poetry. She also blessed other skills that required the use of fire, like blacksmithing. Traditionally, Imbolc represents the beginning of spring and the time when the first lambs are born. It’s the time of the year associated with pregnancy and is the time to honor the fertility goddess Brigid. The Celts celebrated Imbolc to honor these first stirrings of life. Bonfires were lit in honor of Brigid and girls carried small dolls made of straw or oats representing the goddess from house to house to bless them A Brigid’s cross usually consists of rushes woven into a four-armed equilateral cross, although there were also three-armed crosses. They were often hung over doors, windows and stables to welcome Brigid and for protection against fire, lightning, illness and evil spirits.  The crosses were generally left there until the next St Brigid’s Day. I have a post that tells you what to put on your altar to represent her! Be sure to place your altar in a spot where you’ll be able to see it and work with it even if it’s just a quick acknowledgement during the Sabbat season. From my alter-ego @hamishburgessart. #Imbolc #brigidsday greetings to you all! Imbolc - the coming of Spring - the great wheel of the year turns again on February 1st, with the ancient sacred day of the Celtic goddess #Brigid - Mother Goddess of Ireland - also called Brigit, Bride, Brighid, and Brigantia. The root of her name means 'bright' or 'exalted', and possibly 'firebrand'. Tradition has it that she walks the earth Imbolc eve, and Bride with her white wand (top left) is said to “breathe life into the mouth of dead Winter, and bring him to open his eyes to the tears and smiles, the sighs and laughter of Spring” (Carmina Gadelica Vol.1). She is goddess of the home and hearth (centre), and associated with sacred flames, representing the return of the sun and warmth, coming with the lengthening days. Her 3 fires are the hearth, the forge and inspiration. Around the islands of Britain and Ireland, standing stones (shown on the hill-top) are sometimes called Bridestones, named after the goddess Bride. “IMBOLC” © Hamish Burgess 2011. Belle journée à vous ☀️🌈💚🔥💦🍀 #imbolc #bighid #brigantia #saintbrigit #brighidgoddess #brighidscross #light #elements #4elements #healing #guerison #fire #water #renouveau #abondancepositive #commencement #newbeginnings #perceneige #milkcow #fertilité #oaktree #protection #druids #bijoux #jewelry

#imbolcblessings #brighidscross #brighidgoddess
