For example, I have written about the appearance of fairies to women while they are sitting at spinning wheels in previous posts. There are many examples of this in classical fairy tales as well as within collected Irish folklore. This association between spinning and altered states is an ancient and archetypal motif. Whether it is dance, drumming or chant, repetition seems to invoke the ability to cross thresholds of consciousness. We shouldn’t be surprised at this as spinning and turning are represented in ritual art at some of our oldest monuments around the world. In fact, the representation of a circle and eternal returning as part of ritual extends much further than people realise. As mentioned in a previous post, the worlds oldest stone circles were actually made by Neanderthals and are believed to be over 176’000 years old. The Norns of pre-Christian Norse mythology were the rulers of destiny and the past, present and the future. Although there were many Norns, the three most important spun fate beneath Yggdrasill, the world tree. The Old Norse poem, Fáfnismál, describes there being many Norns with some of them originating from the gods whereas others come from the elves. In contrast to this, the poem Völuspá describes the Norns as another type of being who don’t originate from any of the worlds or supernatural beings. Some etymologists believe the word ‘norn’ actually derives from the meaning ‘to spin’. The Norns, like other triple goddesses such as The Fates, then, were seen as weavers of time and fate itself. Another day was spent devoted to my family and the gods. Apollon, Artemis, their beautiful mother Leto. Aphrodite. Hades, Persephone, Hermes. My beautiful kid siblings we will call BCG and PanPirate. MY beautiful partner @crutched.on.a.corpse We went to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. @naturalsciences BCG was very excited to go to the museum. He’s never been to Raleigh before and was excited to see the capital of North Carolina. we don’t go out to places like this very often because BCG, PanPirate and I are all autistic and new places can be very difficult for BCG in particular. But he’s a kid, and kids deserve to do fun things. The museum is a pretty calm and quiet environment even when busy, but has a lot of very stimulating exhibits that can be brightly colored and overflowing with information that can be overwhelming for people with sensory issues, but the museum is pretty sensory-friendly over all. I rate the museum 10/10, no joke. As a paleontology nerd, especially a huge dinosaur enthusiast, I can’t be more excited to see the acrocanthosaurus every time I go! But the home of Acro has a lot of other things to see and do, and delicious cafes to eat at. After we were done we stopped by a cemetery, got happy meals, and the children tasted Crickets for the first time, and myself a Scorpion! The Hazel Tree in Irish Magic, Witchcraft and Folklore. The hazel tree was held in high and mystical regard by the ancient Irish people. In Irish mythology the hazel tree was said to bestow wisdom and it is often considered the Irish tree of knowledge but the fact that we find hazel nuts at our much older megalithic sites shows that the tree was considered sacred in Ireland long before the arrival of the Celtic speaking people. Archaeologists believe that hazelnuts are found at these sites because they were considered a good food to offer to the ancestors of the Otherworld. In this respect the nuts were seen as being a source of sustenance that could cross the barrier of life and death for the newly deceased in their spirit incarnation. Hazel woodlands are considered very liminal places with the boundaries between the physical and spiritual worlds particularly thin. Some traditions record that even by sitting beneath an individual hazel tree a person can be magically transported to the Otherworld. However, although the hazel tree itself is strongly associated with being a doorway to the Otherworld, paradoxically, the wood of the hazel can also be used to repel fairies and act as a warding tool against evil spirits. Kilranelagh Holy Well. Co. Wicklow. This is the ancient Holy Well now dedicated to St. Briget. A remnant of perhaps a much older tradition was the local custom of leaving cups by the well by parents of newly deceased children. The purpose of this was so the child could offer a drink of water to the spirits already residing here. Also potentially connected is the ancient practice of ‘well-wyrding’ where women left offerings to spirits and used the movement of the water to invoke trance states to divine and prophecise. The water was said to have various powers on moonlit nights and sacred days such as the solstices or equinoxes. On the equinox, night and day are balanced: “equinox”, from Latin, meaning “equal night.” The days will continue to get longer until the sun is at its strongest point on June 20th, the date of the summer solstice this year. The spring equinox has always been linked with rebirth, and features in many world myths of light defeating darkness and life overcoming death. Many spiritual figures have feast days at this time and many ancient monuments have alignments recording this important moment including Cairn T at Loughcrew. In Irish folklore this was a time when the good people moved from one Otherworld doorway to another. It is considered a dangerous time to wander near their mounds, stone circles, and fairy trees. This was a prevalent belief in Scottish folklore and is remarked upon by Andrew Lang in his 1891 introduction to the Rev. Robert Kirk’s seminal work, The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies. Lang writes, “They never were, to his mind, plain palpable folk; they are only visible, in their quarterly flittings, to men of the second sight. That gift of vision includes not only power to see distant or future events, but the viewless forms of air.
