Tobar Fláinn, St Flynn's Well, Kilflynn, North Kerry plus two bouncy companions - they couldn't believe their luck! A long leafy walk following a river eventually brings you to St Flann's Well. The well is small, the water now coming from a spout and surmounted by a shrine to the BVM. St Flann was a hermit and as he became old, he lost his sight. The BVM was impressed by all the good deeds and kindnesses he had done and offered to restore his sight. He declined and asked instead that the cure be put in the water for everyone to benefit from. Feast day is 8th March and the well is also said to hold a white trout. In the Church, we even have a special saint (among others) dedicated to interceding for those struggling with mental health problems whose feastday it is today: St. Dymphna of Ireland, who I've depicted in my hand-painted icon here. Whatever mental health afflictions you have, you can bring them to her and to Christ, and of course to your priest and a mental health professional who will aid you in the process. Up at 4am to knock enough coffee in me to wake me before the train to Belfast then long bus journey down to Downpatrick. The St Patrick Centre really is a brilliant interactive exhibition and there's sometime for everyone at it, no matter how much or little you know about St Patrick! Starting Tuesday, Simon de Voil and I will begin a 9-day virtual Celtic pilgrimage for the feast of Beltaine (May 1st) honoring Saints Colman, Sourney, and Patrick. **Linktr.ee in bio** Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the most well-known of all the Irish saints. He was born in 390 either near England’s west coast or in Wales. When he was about sixteen years old, he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland, where he lived as a slave for six years. He endured many hardships, including hunger, thirst, and cold under the rule of a cruel pagan king. It was during his enslavement, while spending long hours in solitude tending sheep, that he had a spiritual awakening. Through the prompting of dreams and other voices, Patrick was able to escape and return back home again. He set out for Gaul to learn theology and prepare himself for his future ministry. After many years passed, he had another dream in which he heard the Irish people calling out to him to return to the land of his enslavement. He returned there in 432 and spent the rest of his life preaching the message of Christianity and helping to establish the Christian Church in Ireland. There is a great deal of evidence that Patrick was not the one to bring Christianity to Ireland, that it had already begun to flower, but certainly he was key in its continued growth. I find his story intriguing. Here was a man enslaved, who escaped by divine intervention, and then heard the call to return to the land of his slavery—and he went willingly. He must have experienced more than his share of discomfort at the thought. Seeking out this “strangeness” and “exile” was at the heart of the monastic call. In going to the places that make us feel uncomfortable and staying with our experience rather than running away, they cracked themselves open to receive the Spirit in new ways. Today is March 17th and the feast day of St. Donnan of Eig and his companions. St. Donnan was a missionary to Ireland in the fifth century. He found success in his mission, but a noblewoman was not pleased with their presence and desired to have the land their mission was on for her flocks. She hired bandits to burn down the building with St. Donnan and all the Church goers in it. However, he requested to let them finish mass first. Compel us to reach out a hand in loving compassion and support and may we recognize all those holy guides who disrupt our intended paths as sparking a new direction on our way. *Pilgrimage Blessing by Christine Valters Paintner from our Soul of a Pilgrim prayer cycle (linktr.ee in bio) On April 23rd, Simon de Voil and I will begin a 9-day virtual Celtic pilgrimage for the feast of Beltaine (May 1st) honoring Saints Colman, Sourney, and Patrick. We have spent many hours over the past year working with our wonderful filmmakers and local guides to bring some more of the sacred sites in the west of Ireland alive for you, our dear community. One of the sites dedicated to St. Colman is especially close to my heart. It is a place in the Burren, the limestone landscape across the bay from where I love, which holds a cave, a church ruin, and a holy well, all surrounded by a grove of hazelnut trees. Colman was the founder of many monasteries, but at an early point in his life he longed for greater solitude and silence. He went into the forest of the Burren and found a cave where he could settle. When we used to bring pilgrims there, we bless ourselves at the well and spend time sitting in silence to listen to the wisdom of wind and stone, of trees and water. Colman lived in here place for seven years in silent contemplation, allowing the wilderness to teach him. Eventually, through divine intervention, he was called back to community life where he built his monastery, Kilmacduagh. St Finnian's Well, Glenbeigh, County Kerry We joined 159 others for an 8km pilgrimage from the Red Fox Inn to St Finnian's Well on Easter Monday. The sun shone, the views were spectacular and an open air Mass was conducted then it was back the way we came for tea and buns. Probably dedicated to St Finán Cam, the squinty one, holding a general cure. The well was renovated by the community, completed in 2019. After a gorgeous trip to #holyislandloughderg this week I’m doing some drawing from my photos. We managed to get a full hour of sunshine between the showers. I have lived beside the lake for 15 years and this is this first time I took the boat over to Holy Island…a 15 minute trip!!! The first recorded history of the Island is of a monastic community from the 6th century. However it is believed that before the Christian hermits arrived it had previously been an island sacred to our pagan ancestors. Took a trip yesterday to Derrykeighan old church, near Dervock & Ballybogey, Co. Antrim. Got these photos and a few more! Daire Cáecháin in Irish. It was founded in 5-6th century by St Colmán Muilinn, "of the mill". His feast day is 1 January. His mother, St Brónach, was a daughter of Milchú, the man who kept St Patrick in slavery as a boy. The delightfully named St Munchin's Well, Bruree, County Limerick. Right down by the River Maigue, this is a tidy but rather soulless site. The water, holding a cure for sore eyes and stomach ailments, is inaccessible due to a grill heaped with large stones. St Munchin, probable founder of Limerick city, was passing through Bruree when he fancied a drink. The locals refused to oblige so the saint thrust his staff into the ground and up spring the well. His saintly kneeprints are meant to be in evidence too. Coming from a pious family, Blessed Peter O’Higgins was a Dominican prior in Naas, county Kildare, Ireland. On March 23rd, 1642 was hanged by the Protestant authorities for refusing to deny his Catholic faith and his body dismembered.
